Application for Membership of Charlie Company

Proposer: Gh0sty
Seconded by: JAS
Seconded by: Benny

Your gaming name: Cadaver
Your real name: Paul Rowlands
Age: 31
Sex: M
Country: U.K.
Date of birth: 3rd July '73

Please tell us a bit about yourself. For example, how long you have been playing CS/CZ/CS:S, what interests do you have outside the playing of computer games, what do you do (work/education etc) and any other information you feel would be helpful in order for our members to get to know you.

Well... The day job sees me toiling away as an Electronic Engineer, mainly in the digital design arena (embedded processor cards, re-programmable ICs, etc) for GSM & 3G network equipment. That's all as dull as dishwater though for anyone who isn't in the industry. wink.gif

Outside of work: I'm a keen skier during the winter months. When it gets a bit warmer, I like to pretend that I can ride my mountain bike without falling off a lot. I play 5-a-side footy (badly), and I'm also looking to get a PADI Open Water qualification this Summer (after getting hooked by a trial dive in Thailand last year). Watching films, drinking proper beer, and trying to placate the missus for my being on the PC (rather than watching mind-numbing soaps with her), also feature high on the list of my after-work activities.

I first started playing CS, in its 1.6 guise, in 2002.

In your own words, how would you explain TCS to an outsider?

A more considered style of play, where the objective and your team are of paramount importance. If you're incapable of absorbing and sticking to a gameplan (no matter how nutty it may seem), or prefer frag-hunting to backing up your mates - it probably isn't for you.

What type of player do you think is attracted to TCS?

Players with a mature-minded attitude. Players who are sick of deathmatch-style public servers, and want to try something different to rekindle their interest in the game. Players who want to enjoy the game (and have a laugh) by playing as part of a team.

In the previous question, which of those traits best describe you?

The one about "enjoying the game as part of a team."

Which do not best describe you?

If any, to a point it's probably the mature-minded attitude one. Sounds far too grown up... bleh.gif

Why do you wish to become more involved in our community? Please state which aspects of the next Company appeal to you.

I've been hanging around on the -=[dMw]=- servers for yonks now. Previously, the barrier for my application to Charlie Company was the requirement to be available for match squads. I could never commit to being available for two matches a week, and didn't think it would be fair to put my name forward then.

Since the recent change to Charlie Co. criteria stating matchplay is not a requirement, I now see no reason to apply for the next level. I'd still like to play in the odd match, and like to think I fulfill all the other criteria for entry. Feel free to disagree though blush.gif

I'd also like to improve as a player by absorbing, and possibly contributing to, the team tactics.

How do you think you would add value to the dMw community if your application is accepted?

I like to think of myself as a good team-player, and hope others do too. Basically though, if I'm asked to do anything for the community, and have the free time to spare for it, I'd be willing to give it a go.

Have you ever been in a Clan before? If yes then which ones and why did you leave?

No. I've never been in a clan before.

Which other games do you play?

Oooh blimey. I've been playing games ever since the 48K speccy I had as a kid. Since then I've tried a bit of everything really. It's mainly FPS games now though, Half-Life 2, Day of Defeat, and Far Cry (which I'm still plodding through) being the most current. I've spent a fair bit of time on Knight Online recently, but don't think the whole MMORPG genre is for me. I've always enjoyed flight sims, IL2 Sturmovik got a lot of attention. For sheer mindless escapist fun, I found GTA: Vice City to be a top game.

Do you have any questions for the Admins? (we will endeavour to answer any questions prior to assessing your application)

The completed form should be forwarded by PM to the Charlie Company member who has agreed to propose your application to the Community’s Admins. The Proposer will then forward your application to the Admins for consideration.

I will ask Gh0sty, JAS and Benny for their supporting information and post it here asap. However, if you feel you are able to cast your vote in advance of that information then go ahead and do so.

What do you know about the applicant? For example, how long have they been playing CS/CZ/CS:S, what interests do they have outside the playing of computer games, what do they do (work/education etc) and any other information you feel would be helpful in order for the Admins to get to know the applicant.

I have known Paul for nearly a year from when he started playing on the dmw servers, I have also played with him on other public servers. I feel that he plays in the maner that is required of dmw members, he is honest and plays in a tcs stylee. I don't really know him that well outside of cs but the times I have spoken to him he comes accross as a genuine person.

Which character traits of the applicant do you think make them suitable for membership or best describe them?

He enjoys the teamplay side of things and is a damn fine shot. He understands the ethos of tcs and like most of us is fed up with the frag monkeys on public servers. He is very good a suppoting his teammates and carries this over onto publics as well.

Which traits do not best describe them?

Can't think of any

How do you think they would add value to the dMw community if their application is accepted?

He is willing to devot time to help improve our community and keen to learn so he can improve his gameplay.

Have they ever been in a Clan before? If yes then which ones and why did they leave?

Not to my knowledge.

Why did you decide to support their application?

I like Paul and feel he will be a good charlie member.
(He also promised me a shedload of beer not that I'm open to bribery or anything :lmfao: )

The completed form should be forwarded by PM to either TeaLeaf or Oldbloke so that the Admins can consider the application fully.

What do you know about the applicant?

He's been playing for bloody ages, one of the few that seem to have always been around, he seems about my age, 12, mentally, but is 30'ish I think, seems to enjoy a laugh, always good natured, I've never seen him lose his rag on the server.
I'll admit at this point there are a few people that make me hesitate about joining a side, but he isn't one of them.

Which character traits of the applicant do you think make them suitable for membership or best describe them?

See above, takes a joke, plays the game right, joins in with banter, never a sharp tongue.

Which traits do not best describe them?

Um, above.

How do you think they would add value to the dMw community if their application is accepted?

Someone else who appears to fit the mould/mold ;) the more well adjusted , good natured general all around good guys we have, the better imho.

Have they ever been in a Clan before? If yes then which ones and why did they leave?

I've never noticed him carrying any other badges, but I could be wrong.

Why did you decide to support their application?

Same reason as the last, absolutley not a bad thing I can think of about him, laughs heartily at me 'here's the corpse' routing everytime he joins, so he must be alright. He seems to be the sort of person we are looking for.

Without tipping my hand, can I play devil's advocate for a second here?

We should not be looking to admit someone to Charlie only because someone does not have problems with them.  We are looking for excellence.  There is a huge difference.  If the membership feel that getting into Charlie is too 'easy' or the brand value and prestige of being in Charlie Company is being 'diluted' then it is down to us to raise the bar and implement new standards (which is what I thought was agreed at the last round of negotiations).

I am not saying either way yet which way i will vote on this application, just that we should be voting YES when we have clear evidence or knowledge that the applicant will add value to us and what we do.  No specific criticism of your comments here JAS, but as an example, your comments as to what value would be added basically said "well he doesn't seem to cause any trouble so I can't think any reason to say no".  Maybe we should be thinking of reasons to say Yes?  If we can't think of any then maybe we should say No.  Discuss.

Useful if he can fix cars, do a bit of plumbing, painting and decorating, carpentry, tiling and gardening :).

I can tie my shoe laces, just.

Seriously though, I feel he is a very good player, and definately would be an asset in match play, so on the CS/Z gaming front. A very good team player. He can perhaps write a port of CS for mobiles for us :D.
