Latest from CS-Nation ...
VALVe's Doug Lombardi has sent out an e-mail to a few sites, including CS-Nation, concerning CS 1.6 BETA. In it, Doug says that the CS 1.6 BETA is scheduled to begin this Thursday, the 16th.
Remember this is the BETA release and will be delivered via Steam only.
i will not b sampling 1.6 till the full release comes out.
I'm going to sign-up for the beta. If I make it in I'll let yous know what it's like..

Lists the changes
Amongst other things :-
Added two new rifles, the Galil and Famas.
Added a Riot Shield for the CTs.
New version of de_inferno.
New version of de_aztec.
Added new map de_airstrip (video walkthrough on Fileshack
CS-Nation have been given an early playtest.
Read all about it here:
http://csnation.counter-strike.net/articles.php/117/ (http://csnation.counter-strike.net/articles.php/117/)
The changes to the scoreboard sound naff.
cant w8 for the famas, and i wonder how they will try to improve aztec? and they could easily improve many other maps i personally like aztec inferno is the one with the new route put in with the last change wasnt it, this coulkd b made much better with it being a bit quicker between sites
i think 1.6 looks very good but some of the changes are big... like the new shield on CT team, i bet some people will hate that.
atm i think its a bad idea but i never played useing it so i dont know 8)
the shield doesnt sound that good going on what i have read and talked about. it will only stop low powerd weapons ie pistols tmp, mac totaly, will reduce the power of rifle bullits [not by a great deal tho] and will have bugger all effect on weapons such as awm and para.
thats just what i have heard tho
No sheepy the shield will stop all balistics (guns! ;) )
o.... thats crap
ya thats what i read... i also read u can only use it ducking and people can easly run bhind and kill u
I've read "Lord of the Rings" and "Janet and John Go to the Fair" :)
i take my hat off 2 ne 1 thats managed to read LOTR, far to big for me. i lose intrest after 5or6 hundred pages
I just downloaded Steam v2.0. It's not on the US sites yet or the UK sites but I got it from a German site. Here's it is if anyone wants it:
//www.sonnet.eclipse.co.uk/steaminstall.exe
I installed it and once installed it startes connecting to the Steam server to update some files, but it must be pretty congested at the moment so it's taking a while.
:) 8)
Although I managed to get the Steam 2.0 installed early yesterday evening (thankyou CS Central for a working link) I've only just managed to get the thing to connect to a server. I've double-clicked the 'Counterstrike' link and a little box now tells me that my game will be ready to play in 247 minutes :(
Yep sounds familliar, I got a connection at 08:30 this morning and now have 45 mins 21 secs left download time.
I got the software last night but I couldn't even get a server response so gave up. It worked this morning straight away but to hell with broadband requirements, I could be using a modem and get a better download.
Do I hear you say but it's the first day of launch, yeah my answer to that is it is always the launch date when we will actually want to use the steam so unless they expand their content network dramatically, CS will be taking 4 hours to download every time there is an update. Apparently they push updates out to user so if they have any sense at all they will schedule them carefully to avoid this congestion. 42 mins 20 secs now. Ooo I could crush a grape.
u must type very slow there albert
Quoteu must type very slow there albert
Nah, I'm ok, but slow when I want to spell the correctly (not teh  ) There download clock was botched.
ANYWAY GOOD NEWS!!!!!
Steam with CS 1.6 does not over write your old CS directory at all!!!!!
A new cstrike directory is downloaded and used only when steam is your gateway onto the CS 1.6 servers!
Only problem is getting onto a server, I've not managed it yet :(
We could ask that nice Mr. Blueball if we could use his server for testing 1.6. :D
QuoteWe could ask that nice Mr. Blueball if we could use his server for testing 1.6. :D
Already mentioned it, to quote "I'm not touching the beta with a barge poll, it's taken long enough to get 1.5 the way I want it"
I may do a bit of a beta server build myself but I should really be studying for my CCIE exam just now, not playing Linux admin.
Given that I now know that 1.6 won't screw up my 1.5 install then why not :-) Of course you'll have to wait 3 years for me to get it downloaded and so far steam has screwed up 2 user accounts. I create an account, I log in. When I log out and try to log in again it says that either the account doesnt exist or the password is wrong!!! But "Remember my password" is ticked so how can it be!!!
I have tried unticking password memory bu it still loses account after one login. What KAK. :(

Yeah BB, I'm not sure how we go about getting a beta of the linus server binary. I've never used the windows version but it comes with the client doesn't it?
I see from the steam accounts window, you can subscribe to a dedicated server option, so I assume you get the normal start a server with the update but if you want to run a server yourself, dedicated you have to dl the update. Not sure how linux would work though.
If I were you I'd leave it alone  at least until they sort out the initial teathing problems like loggin in (ffs loggin in!).
I'm pretty sure there's no Linux server out yet.
The info below is lifted from CS Central ...
We're looking for people who would like to run Win32 dedicated servers for the Steam Beta we're planning to roll out later today. This beta release will include Counter-Strike 1.6, the latest version of Team Fortress Classic (which includes the new teleporter the Engineer can build), Half-Life Deathmatch, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic, and Opposing Force.
We don't have a Linux dedicated server package yet. We'll send more information about this when we're ready. If you're interested in getting the Win32 dedicated server package and running a server, you can sign up for the mailing list here:
http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/steam (http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/steam)
Once we're ready for you to start grabbing the files, we'll send information to the Steam mailing list. Let me know if you have any questions.
Maybe this explains the ultr long d/l times
Well it appears that some last minute changes have been made, and Valve Software is not releasing the Steam 2.0 / Counter-Strike 1.6 client this evening after all. Obviously there are a number of leaked clients floating around out there although people arent really having much luck with them.
Steam Beta 2.0 Admission Suspended : The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now. Anyone interested in hosting a Steam content server should email biz@steampowered.com. (Content server requirements can be found at //www.steampowered.com Those who have already joined the beta are encouraged to continue their participation and submit their feedback.
The file was never even made official and we were never given the green light to put the client out on Fileshack, you can thank the gaming press for leaking it out early. I suppose if just a leak was enough to max out the servers, an actual official release would have just been ugly.

June mate, it has crept back from October 2002 to June 2003, I am not interested, really need some motivation. No perks in getting an exam like that with the market in its current state. My company already have hundreds of CCIEs too and don't reward too well for getting it any more.
How about you, when's yours? Which Cisco office are you at. my missus works for em too.
well i get
"Could not connect to Steam network.
Either the network are not running or ur internet is down
Please try later"
anyone know why??? its not my internet and no fire wall on.

It has been delayed in so far as no more new login account are to created for now. I got in there quickly and got CS1.6 downloaded and I am now getting HL. But I'm damned if CS will load. Fortunately CS1.5 works as normal 8)
its back up now... CS takes 15m but im downloading HL one now its taking some what longer.
Does it matter what order u download them? i hope not

I'm at the TAC in Milton Keynes (hi TL) actually I work for Getronics but we are outsourcers so to all intents and purposes we are Cisco.
whens mine.....hmmm better take my ccna first I think, Finding it hard to motivate myself to take the exams for much the same reason as you!

My brother spent some time in the US last year and did the CIPxx exams. It's no fun with the studying, so good luck for it. From memory I think the ones he did were:
CIPTSS - Cisco IP Telephony Solutions Specialist
CIPTOS - Cisco IP Telephony Operations Specialist
CIPTDS - Cisco IP Telephony Distribution Specialist
If I got those wrong them I apologise to anyone who knows the real initials!

Yup me too and it downloads a dll file before giving that message, piece of crap software!! :x
I dont think it is crap software. I just thnik that they have underestimated the bandwidth usage. To be honest, If they are going to go down this route then:
1. Everyone needs broadband
2. They need to offer more, faster and better connected servers
3. i'll still find something to grumble about :)
after playing 1.6 beta online a few times i would say its good 8)
I'll leave my CS1.6 server running all day for anyone who wants a go.
Password is same as Meat Hook.
213.152.32.253:27015 is the IP/ port combo.
I'll idle there myself too.
:D 8)
I can see a server on 213.152.32.253:17815 but not 213.152.32.253:27015
Has there been a typo? or am i stupid
Just incase steam is doing something funny, I've opened that port BB mentions to.
So give it a go. FYI, when I browse it using HLSW from the LAN, 27015 is open.
:)
I can't get Steam to play ball at the moment. I was hoping for some afternoon 1.6ing :(

I'm around all day so can tweak and play around with it.
It was lightening fast to start today :D

the port above is definately what the server is listening on

Still can't see your server Albert :(
Me neither :(
Really strange, I have my ports all open on the firewall and the server is running. I'm not running dedicated server so perhaps it is not set to allow internet users to access it.
Seems the update has been removed again. :(
Btw, can't see albert's server, but Blueball's was their about midday today.
Hopefully mine will be back in a while. I'm running dedicated server which may be why you can see mine.
Albert? Have you set sv_lan 0 in server.cfg?
Right, both servers up. Albert and Oldie have RCON passwords.

I've been trying all afternoon but Steam is knackered. Even though I have all the files I need to run a server (and in fact had it running earlier) I cannot start it because Steam is bushed. I'm giving up for today and will try again later :(
... I hope.

Nope still can't join it.
press join and it just refreshes the screen doesn't promt me for the password.
saying that if I try and join any of the others I just get kicked or it hangs up saying validating game reourses.
What am i doing wrong?? :(
You are doing nothing wrong. This is not a beta release, it is Alpha at best. The servers won't stay up for more than half an hour, it only prompts for a password 1 time out of about 6, it continually loses my steam account, the server crashes and tells me that one of the model files has changed since the server was launched and that I should run diagnostics to check for a hardware error. I could go on but I've spent most of the day reinstalling it. I am giving up until the release is much more stable.
Sorry folks but it's just too shaky to waste time with just now. I'll happily set up 1.6 for you all again once things improve (lets give it a week or so) but I feel we are wasting our time just now.
This may be of interest to anti Steam personnel. One of which I have become

A lovely site but wasted. The forum posts I have seen intimate that 1.6 will be released both on Steam and as apatch. Seemingly 1.7 will not. Please remember that the current 1.6 is the beta and not the "release" :-)

yep you're on my buddy list with stryker, blueball and doorman.
Following a steam/cstrike update today both my 1.5 and 1.6 servers are up and running.
blueball.deadmen.co.uk
port 27015 for CS 1.6
port 27016 for CS 1.5
passwords as per meathook.
Seems that I still cannot get cstrike 1.6 to bind to anything other than port 27015
Have fun!
I can 'see' your server but it will not connect ???
Yup I have the same problem.
Have added blueball and oldie and doorman to my list, would have done Albert and Stryker but there were to many to choose from.
I'm on as Gh0st Face Killah
QuoteI can 'see' your server but it will not connect ???
Steam sux, cs1.6 is trash
Even on my LAN I cannot connect to the friggin thing!!!
I can rcon to it. I can get it to tell me the password. I can change the password using rcon but I cannot connect as a player !!!!! and yes I have different steam ideas for my client and server!
I give in - i'm going away to be a postman!
QuoteI can 'see' your server but it will not connect ???
There seem to be a lot of people having this problem (plenty posts in the forums anyway). The workround is to put:
+connect 80.195.14.70:27016 +password xxxxx
in the start options for counterstrike. It's crap, I know but until they fix it we're stuck with it. NB this only affects password protected servers.
i got steam and cs 1.6 today and it works perfectly, which is strange because NOTHING ever works first time on my tempermental piece' a crap computer. i played aztec and it looks very friggin nice indeed, especially the updated bridge. famas and galil rifles are pretty good, but galil seems a bit too good at the mo, maybe they'll change it later, its only beta after all. i only got a riot shield once and it was a bit crap but i guess it takes practice. i only played for about 10 minutes but all in all it seems pretty stable, though i know all of you have had some trouble so hah! now you know how i feel :D
ok gents. should I get 1.6 and steam, or should I carry on waiting....I can't be arsed to read the other pages so a yes/no would be good...ta :D
yes and no
Yes ... then we can all go play on BlueBall's server 8)
hurumph. got it, ready, go....oh...bugger, no servers, well, no BB server to be precise..
who cares as long as my pc keeps workin
the best map ive been on is wild west assault 8)
Sorry guys,
been away for a while and server had crashed. I've restarted it again. Details:
blueball.deadmen.co.uk:27016
password as per MeatHook
Oldie and Albert have RCON rights
ta bb :) its empty cos i imagine not many of us have steam but ill try and idle on there if anyone fancies a game. if you join and im afk ill probably show up soon ill check back every so often in case someone shows up :)
err scratch that, it doesnt seem to want to connect
Its a problem with the current steam/cs1.6 setup. To connect to a password protected server you have to add:
+connect 80.195.14.70:27016 +password xxxxx
Stupid but it is a beta!
