The below has today been posted to the "alt.games.half-life.counterstrike" newsgroup, under the heading "Professional Counter-Strike - A New Year's Resolution......."
May I ask everyone who reads this post to go to support the newsgroup post and to help spread the word about PCS. The more posts up there the merrier - but keep it respectful please! Imagine a block of 40-50 posts starting with the title "Professional Counter-Strike - A New Year's Resolution.......". It will make people stop and read it. It will make more people join the PCS community!
So for your first new year's resolution, go post some supportive comments under this posting in the newsgroups eh? But remember we are trying to encourage people to try PCS, not frighten them off
I should also give credit to OldBloke whose earlier writings allowed me to paraphrase and re-write as appropriate :D
Don't honk your horn to show your support, go post in the NG's - and then post here that you have done it! :D
Many thanks.

QuoteProfessional Counter-Strike - A New Year's Resolution......
Tired of frag-monkeys and cheaters ruining your game?
Tired of losing rounds because your side plays as schizophrenic individuals rather than as a team?
Do you wish you could play CS with people you know and trust?
Would you appreciate the ability to talk to your team mates in-game to assist each other in achieving the map objective?
Well that's exactly what PCS (Professional Counter-Strike) is all about. In short it's an objective based and team orientated style of play used by the people in the PCS community.
Interested?
Then register for the MeatHook PCS server by clicking here: http://mailman.crosswired.org.uk/listinfo/mh-pcs (http://mailman.crosswired.org.uk/listinfo/mh-pcs) It's free, so why not give it a try?
-=[dMw]=- (Dead Men Walking) have dedicated a server to Professional Counter-Strike - the way we think the game should really be played! We have an active and growing PCS community and welcome people who want to try PCS out for the first time. The many regulars on the server are always happy to help new players 'convert' to the PCS style of play - and PCS is something that most players pick up real quickly! The majority of people who try PCS never go back to 'deathmatch CS'.
Because our PCS is on a password-protected server it stops unknown players (and cheats) visiting the server and ruining everyone's game. We have a strong and omnipresent set of Admins on the server, along with a strong cast of regulars who together make sure that the highest level of gameplay is maintained. For example, we will always try to balance the teams so that the maximum playability and enjoyment is extracted from a map.
We aren't saying that PCS is the only way to play CS, it's just that we find PCS a far more rewarding experience. Our growing number of registered players agree!
You'll find that on our PCS server you'll talk to your team mates a lot for a start. It's a bit like being in a clan match where like-minded people are trying to complete the objective using on-the-fly tactics relayed over voice comms. We also utilise map boundaries (no-go areas) to make the scenario as realistic as possible, to prevent idiotic & blind rushing and to aid gameplay. Team balance is paramount to having an enjoyable game (just ask anyone who has been on a losing and under-manned side only to watch new players enter the server and join the already stronger team) so we also ask people to swap teams if necessary. The PCS style of play attracts a diverse audience - the beauty of this is that you then have a chance to get to know the regular players - you work better as a team, win more often and get to know some great people along the way. Just check out our PCS Forums //www.deadmen.co.uk/forum it will give you an idea of the comerarderie that exists within our PCS community.
So that's my New Year's resolution - to let people know that PCS is out there, just waiting for you to find it. I hope this post helped that objective. So to paraphrase a television show, "This year I will mostly be playing PCS". What will you be doing?

Anyone know of a free to use news server in the UK?
Oh and did you notice that there is a pcs news group? Same as the above group but with .pcs at the end.
http://news.cis.dfn.de/ (http://news.cis.dfn.de/)
Cannot post binaries so no pron, but carries everything else and is very reliable. Highly recommended.
Thanks Neutron, they seem like a good bunch but registration is manual so I can't check TeaLeafs post straight away.
Any other servers out there?
I have tried about 20 so far but most are not available to people not using their ISP.

It'd be good netiquette to post a follow-up to your post telling everyone that you accidentally posted it to the same newsgroup :)

They're all german servers i think and sometimes go down for a short time, but have always come back up fairly rapidly.
Come on folks - get your supportive comments in quickly, before your ISP's server wipes the original post :( We want a block of posts not a trickle - people do not notice trickles (as they say)

Sorry TL, still trying to find a nttp server that will allow me to post
At last, I ended up going back to my old dial-up virgin.net news server and as usual they have all the groups:
My message:
I play regularly on Meat Hook PCS and thoroughly enjoy this type of
Counter Strike. With so many public servers out there full of
deathmatchers it's a pleasure to play CS the way it was supposed to be
played.
The regulars on Meat Hook simply try to complete the object with
teamwork and good communications. It makes such a change from seeing
your whole team run off to try and get kills each round. If there is a
player spoiling the game he gets warned and if it doesn't stop he's
history.
The server is near full each evening (European time) and there are
always events being arranged with things like touraments for regulars
to join in on. The folks who play on the server ae friendly and
helpful and you'll never get abuse because you are new or just aren't
playing well that day.
If you are interested in getting away from the monotony of public
server boredom then your should follow Mr TeaLeaf's advice.
Albert (Meat Hook regular)

Newsgroups are one of the old mysterious bits of the internet that Geeks over 20 remember. Newsgroups are discussion forums not disimilar to this chat forum exept they require no logon and are not web based. You need a newsreader (Outlook Express can read newsgroups) to read newsgroups and to write to them. Most ISP's provide a 'newsfeed' although poorer ISP's often do not cover all groups or hold posts for only a few days.
This might help http://www.howstuffworks.com/newsgroup.htm (http://www.howstuffworks.com/newsgroup.htm)
:)

Lo JAS, since I have spent the last how many hours getting my newsreader to work, I can offer a few tips. Use a newsreader called Agent which is sort of the mIRC equipvilent of the newsreader world.
Below is a link from my site for the software:
http://www.sonnet.eclipse.co.uk/a32-191.exe (http://www.sonnet.eclipse.co.uk/a32-191.exe)
It may need a serial number or something, I can't remember (possibly Serial# 19781010) mine.
You just install this fella, go to Options, User and System Profile and add the URL of your news server, e.g. news.virgin.net.
After that go to Online and select Refresh Groups List and wait a minute or two to get the 45000+ groups list downloaded.
After that you just browse through or search the groups and when you find alt.games.half-life.counterstrike double click and download the headers. You should be able to list by the user who posted the message so look for TeaLeaf.
You then reply to his post.
To reply to a post you need to first configure an email server in Options/ Users and Server Profile/System and give yourself a name under the user tab. You don't need to give out an email address if you don't want to.
And there you have it.
I use good old Outlook with no probs. Stick your ISP server settings in and away you go.
Unless you want some obscure newsgroup you should be okay..
Albert, stay away from
alt.binaries.scottish.tartan.panties.for.men 8O
thx for the help gents ill have a go tonight when i get home....

Funny thing that. I just ordered a kilt for my wedding but don't know what tartan to get :) I'll have to check it out.
If you're posting to a newsgroup for the first time, remember to spamblock your given email address (or to use a spamtrap address if you're with news.cis.dfn.de which disallows munged addresses). The simplest way to munge your From header whilst still allowing people to email you is to simply put the word REMOVE into your email address somewhere, for example joe.public@REMOVErandomisp.com.
The reason for this is that newsgroups are frequently trawled by spam-bots. They collect email addresses from both headers and message bodies. These addresses then make it onto wonderful spam-list CDs, which are sold to unscrupulous organisations, which then send you lots of spam.
Incidentally, if you're giving somebody's email address out over USENET, don't write it un-munged. Write it out as jane.doe AT otherisp.net or something.
I actually did a sad geeky test once, posting to a uk heirarchy group with an un-munged email address just twice. The address, which was never given out to anybody, anywhere, except on that newsgroup, got about five articles of spam in the first month, fifteen in the second, forty in the third, and I stopped checking after that...

Sorted
PCS pahh..
That’s that silly way of playing where you........
1 Work as a team
2 Co-ordinate attacks
3 Use voce coms
4 Cover the bomb
5 Attempt to complete the objective
6 Get people on camera, guiding you in for a kill
7 Have people covering you when you fight
8 Have admins following the play
9 Get respect from other players enjoying the game
So ill give it a go I thought. ...and found it excelled in every aspect, bringing out great individual skill and team based play
The Tactics are on-the-fly and great fun to try and accomplish
