Title: Who do we
Post by: Benny on March 21, 2005, 08:48:26 AM
I'm not a vegetarian, I'm not a particularly green person, I'm not kept awake at night by worries about pollution and deforestation. I eat kebabs, I leave lights on, I wear leather shoes.

Two things this weekend have disturbed me slightly, this image, for some reason, bothered me,

and if it doesn't like remote linking : http://www.amonline.net.au/muse/oct2001/images/oct_01j.jpg (http://www.amonline.net.au/muse/oct2001/images/oct_01j.jpg)
I suppose I should explain it was caught by drift-net fishing. What a fantastically human thing to do, throw in a fu*king great big net, see what comes out.
Is that justifiable in any way?
The second thing that almost brought a tear to my eye, and bear in mind I'm from the south so I'm hard.
This is disturbing. Don't watch if easily upset/offended/given nightmares. I'm not sure if an admin will pull this.
It's graphic and regards animal skins. How can we, in todays society, even come close to justifying this?

As those who have orgainised meals at the LAN will testify I have made one or two lifestyle choices based on these realities.

Everyone is free to live by their own set of rules and by their own moral compass. What people can't do is deny the realities of life. All they can do is to choose to ignore them.

Rubbish like this doesn't 'not' happen because we just choose not to acknowldge its existence. It happens and we just choose not to care.

The anti-fur video is quite graphic ...and shows how low mankind can go for the sake of vanity ........

The plain fact that the poor animals are skinned ALIVE is really quite disturbing how anyone can stand by and let an animal suffer in that way is beyond me, I too am speechless ....

I wish I never opened that link.
Doesn't make we want to stop eating meat but it's sick to skin something alive.

dont you hate it when curiousity gets the better of you, then you wish you never did it.
Well, i wish i never watched that video now.

I do on the other hand, understand that thats life, and fassion sadly, but theres better ways... if your going to do it, kill it nicely, shoot it in the head, injection, etc etc.

Simply wrong.

I do tend to take such videos with a pinch of salt. Yes it is horrific, but that process is by no means the case in every single place that produces fur.

In the same way that anti-abortion campaigners always show the abortion taking place at 24 weeks, with all the mess, gunk and foetus that has to be scraped out, whereas pro-campaigners show it being done with a handy pill.

While I do agree it is horrific and fur should not be worn, I still would think very carefully about taking that video at face value...

In essence I'm not against fur. It can be argued that it's 'greener' than fake fur, but that is disgusting. Rear them, hunt them, use their skins but  for God's sake treat them with respect. Red Indian, I suppose we must call them native Americans, culture decreed that you thanked your brother for the gift of his meat and pelt. Don't know where to stop.

It's one thing eating meat, eating is a part of staying alive I guess.  But skinning a live animal so you have the latest/warnest fashion?

Someone should try skinning the people that buy that trash!!

People who can watch living animals suffer like that without the feelings to urge them to do a better job are psychos who need psychiatric help

That is a more accurate reflection on the video imo.  The majority of the outrage (but not all) has to do with the 'live' element.  It would make far less impact if it were taken in a commercial operation's premises, but then that wouldn't make very good shock viewing would it?  I don't feel particularly for or against fur (I wear leather shoes, wool jumpers etc so I feel it would be hypocritical to say otherwise), but whatever your views 'humane' should be a key thread in them. :(

I'd agree with whoever said the video has an agenda, and it achieves, at least for me, exactly what it sets out to do.

Like I said, I eat meat and wear animal products, but skinned mink(?) blinking at me for some reason got to me.

Does anyone else find the word humane some kind of oxymoron?

The tragedy is that we do all kinds of lovely things to animals and they're not just limited to the fur trade. As others have commented the food and leather industries also have a record on how they treat animals and it isn't particularly good.

It's a stretch to argue we shouldn't commercialy use animals for food and clothing. However I think we're mostly blind to the processes involved in intensive farming of animals and the degree to which they suffer in the pursuit of cheaper and cheaper food.

I always worried that if I really found out what went on in the process of putting a KFC bargain bucket in my grubby mit, then I might well give up eating meat altogether.

Sadly I did and I have.   :(
