I will shortly be putting up a public DoD server.
As with all our public servers it's role is to encourage new people to join the community.
Why Day of Defeat? Because it has a well-established player base and it's objective based. Plus Tutonic is an ED admin for DoD :)
So get DLing and I'll let you know when the server is up.
Oh baby oh baby!
I love DoD, been playing it on the FoCA DoD server for a year or so. Can't wait for a dMw server. Good gaming AND a good ping!!!
K started dl now. will let it run for tonight as i am not at home so i should be able to play tomorrow <_<
Hmmm, DoD appears on Doris' "play games" but not mine. :(

Good I might live longer
Have you both bought the same version? The Bronze version of HL2 doesn't seem to have the back catalogue. The silver version does. then again, IIRC, DoD was always avail anyway. Are you sure it isn't listed in light grey further down and you just haven't pre-cached it yet?

As a comment i feel we are spreading rather thin over quite alot of servers! Our community is big yes but i don't think we can keep all the servers full or full enough for a game if we have such a variety! I think the idea is a good one but should be pull one of our other servers from cs ?

The 30 cal is a very effective weapon but it is best used with the bipod deployed (go prone or find a suitable wall/ledge to rest it on then hit secondary fire to deploy bipod). The accuracy can be lethal with bipod and small bursts.
PS It is one of my fav weapons after the KAR sniper
 Hmmm, I suppose I'd better download it as we're bound to play it at the LAN.

I'd be happy to help with whatever I can, but I barely played it after version 3.1 til recently, and I don't know any of the newer maps. However, I still know how all the various weapons work and the basic game mechanics, which is all a person needs. I remember finding it very confusing when I first started.
edit: one quick tip -
Don't just go for the automatic weapons thinking they'll be easier after CS. In the old days of DoD only a couple of players per team were allowed to play as automatic-carrying classes, while everyone else had to take either a k98 (german rifle that's essentially one-hit to kill, with slow reload) or the garand (american rifle, less powerful than the k98 but faster reload) - both are incredibly effective weapons, and I always seem to do better with them than when I take the "easy" option of taking something like a thompson or a mp44.
Played a few maps allready and the nasty thing was that for some flagrecoveries you need 2 persons :( . For the rest, I allready found a few gitspots, ask GFK ;) .
Sorry about the moaning part.
Edit: I would like to know a bit more about the nade part. You pull out the pin, you toss it and only after 6 seconds it goes off. Anyway of speeding it up?
Hold onto it for a few seconds before you throw it? I can't remember if it works, its been a while since i played DoD.

Pull the pin, and throw it on the ground at your feet. Hit your use key (E, Enter, whatever), and you'll pick it up again. You can now merrily run around with it until it goes off in your mitt, killing you and your teammates. Or lob it away again.
This is known as cooking 'nades. The beauty of it is if you time it right, a cooked grenade should explode immediately upon hitting the ground at its target. Great for not giving a deployed machine-gunner at a choke point enough time to undeploy his weapon, unprone, and run like buggery :)
If you're feeling lucky, you can also pick up enemy nades that have been thrown at you and toss them back...
Cooking/Priming is a must to learn, unfortunately I've read that it is going away in Source, which sucks because not only is it a valuable tool, it's damn funny to watch someone mess it up and get splattered. Try throwing back grenades if you know you cant run away from it, that's always fun and if you can do it, the kill is that much more enjoyable.
.30 Cal: If you're going to fire it w/o deploying, be ready to push the mouse so the barrel goes to the earth (mine is inverted, so I push away). You can tear a hole in someone with it and it's great to learn in a pinch spot.
Another joy of DoD is being able to change your class depending on the circumstances.
If I'm going to go mad ass running for flags, something like the Thompson or MP40 work well, although I have to admit to my favourite gun being the Mauser Karbiner 98k. I can use it in close quarters combat, or even to snipe. I love that gun :)
If you're going to cover an aera though, something like an MG is perfect, maximum damage from minimal effort, just make sure to go prone and deploy the weapon :P
For any that didnt know yet, the DoD server is up - 82.197.65.246:27016 -=[dMw]=- Homer DoD Public

I agree. It's most definately got potential.
Yup. Think we just need to find the best maps (CAEN is ace) and make sure there is enough of us on to push teamplay. :D
You can play with variables for says:
bind "h" "say_team Dropping ammo for %i at %l; dropammo"
bind "i" "say_team Enemy sited near %l"
bind "o" "say_team I need help at %l and I'm the poor %c with %h health left."
%c - class
%h - health
%i - id
%l - loc
%r - identified (%i) target's health
%s - I can't remember
%t - time
Don't forget to leave your friendly neighborhood MG some ammo :)
Here's something you have to practice a little. There are many spots you can jump down and use a slanted edge to take the damage from the fall. This is on Avalanche, jumping from the 3rd story roof top near center flag:
Marked the stone for reference.
Jumped down towards the slanted edge...
Minimal if any damage at all is taken.
Good info RB
What's your recommended map cycle?
Ih, just shove all the maps on there for now and we'll soon learn which ones we like. Maybe we could put it to a vote in a few weeks.

Rabbi Bob: I see all your Axis flags are swastikas, US flags are replaced with the Stars & Stripes, and you've also got a little bloke with a gun in the centre of your minimap. Are you running some kind of realism pack on your copy of DoD?
http://www.fileplanet.com/136373/130000/fi...eme-Realism-1.2 (http://www.fileplanet.com/136373/130000/fileinfo/DoD-Extreme-Realism-1.2)
Be very careful about it, after installing it I had some oddities and ended up removing sections of it. Some of the sprites are screwed I think. Some of the sounds are good, some of them suck.
My advice: extract to a temp directory and move things in and out of the DoD folder if you're going to try it.
Use at your own risk.

It can't be a 'realism' pack or the flags would be British, not Stars'n'Stripes
I hate revisionist history - it's like the film U571 (or whatever number it was) - millions of people (many of which are in north america now think that the encoder was recovered by US forces but it wasn't, it was recovered by British forces (succintly reported on here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/773913.stm) by the BBC).
I would quickly count the number of similarly revisionist episodes that I can can recall, but after taking off my socks and shoes I ran out of fingers and toes. Then when I passed 21 I had to give up :P
Nothing personal against the good people of the US (I count many as very good friends), but this kind of stuff gets me annoyed. My wife's family have a fairly large naval history (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=captain+walker&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official) (read the Captain 'Johnnie' Walker links), my father's father was an Army man his whole life, so I am sensitive to stuff like this.
T'Not In Favour of Hollywood Revisionist History'L.
I quite understand your points, but it isn't as bad as all that.
In DoD, there are currently three nations - the British, the US, and the Germans. Which set of allies face off against the Germans is entirely dependant on the map.
So on dod_avalanche, which Rabbi Bob was demonstrating, it is the US Army vs the Germans. Whilst dod_caen, another flag capping map, it's the British versus the Germans.
We Brits only have four classes and weapons available to us, compared to the US and Axis seven - Rifleman (Lee Enfield), Sergeant Major (STEN SMG), Gunner (BREN MG), and Marksman (Scoped Lee Enfield). We also get different skins, Union Jacks as flags, and some really hammy voice acting. ("Orrf we go then!", "Ready to give Jerry 'ell lads!", and the like.) It's also not uncommon to see 'British maps only' servers hosted here in the UK.
How can you destroy jeeps with the packages? And sometimes walls can't be destroeyed? How does this work?
Some of the maps had jeeps in them to be destroyed. As things changed the jeeps stayed and the text instructions stayed but you are no longer meant to blow up the jeeps so can't (I know I spent ages finding this out on the forums)
Thanks BB, I was allready thinking, why can't I blow them up.
Another thing, when I want to place the charges at an wall or so it sometimes doesn't work and sometimes it does. How does this work?
re: Cadaver's post just above:
But the Brits were only added in (if memory serves) DoD 1.0 - in the betas it was all US vs Germans, though there was a very good pack of replacement models to change the US side into Brits.
Thanks for the explanation folks, I'll put the system into reverse gear and slowly crawl back into my box.........

As axis, I was trying to organise a ruch on the center flag. I had the whole team (barring a sniper) with me just tucked behind some sandbags.
