I had some devastating news this week. Work are sending me to Cape Town for a week. So I'm going to miss five whole days of WOW. :angry:
I have loaded it up on my laptop, so my only hope i have got is that my hotel has a good broadband connection.

Uncalled for and unnecessary i disagree it started with Knight online and continues with WOW im just fedup of the comments ....people want to comment expect a reply.
Bad day not really uncalled for criticism of a game people cant be TANGO'd to try that annoys me.
That's not how I see it but everyone's viewpoint is different I guess. My perception is that many of those who do not play KO or WOW have been poking fun at those who do. You seem to be taking things more seriously.

Interestingly (or not) a lot of people that left Star wars galaxies to go play WOW are now actually coming back and really slating Wow.
And that's the point. They tried WOW, didn't like it, and so went back to SWG. It does grate a little when poeple who have never played a game make veiled remarks about how daft some of us are for doing so.
I get this a lot outside dMw as I have gone the whole hog and created a real little character in the game. He has a history and a personality all of his own. He doesn't play a game, he lives in a world. Real old school paper and dice role play stuff :) That it's a really fun experience doesn't detract from the fact that plenty of people would love to call me a 'sad act' for pretending to be a 64 year old dwarf with an irrational dislike for elves and a slight drinking problem. Maybe it's us who are a little over defensive but there you go.
There seems to be a sense of mild panic when dMw players go and play another game for a while, especially such longstanding senoir members as Smite. I'll admit to getting a little twitchy when so many people went off and played Kinghts Online. Was this the end of the dMw??!! What were Oldie and TL upto abandoning us all. Clearly this was all cobblers and no one was going anywhere. Thye were just enjoying a bit of a change for a while, while we sorted out the servers.
No one plays one game for ever and I can't see myself playing WOW for years. When my college work is over and I've had a real good bash at WOW I'll be back with th dMw again, as I assume many people who have gone and played WOW will do. It's nice to know that it's Ok to go and do something new for a while and then you'll be accepted back into the dMw fold without issue.
Maybe just let us get on with it without the cheap shots?

Some excellent comments Smilo, but I would add that I definitely don't feel like I have 'left dMw' to play WoW. I am a member of the dMw community who happens to play a number of games, including CS/CZ and WoW (amongst other games). I hope to continue to be a member of the community for as long as you buggers are willing to put up with me ;) You never left dMw when you started playing WoW, you just added your experience to the wealth of the community.
One of our strengthes as a community is the fact that we do not all focus purely on one aspect of gaming. Sure we have a core game, but we have always experimented. The difference I have always felt with WoW is that dMw can't put up their own server for it, so it's seen as a 'non-dMw' game. The games where dMw _do_ run a server are somehow seen as 'acceptable'. We should remember that community does not rely upon us all doing the same thing all the time. I am sure that CS will at some point die - I hope not just yet, but it will come. I hope that the community is strong enough (and believe that it is) to allow us to continue whatever game or games we happen to play.

If you want leet speak stick to CS - it has no place in WOW imho, and you won't get it on RP servers. Plus, as soon as Battlegrounds get turned on the benefits of playing on a PvP server are going to disappear pretty darned fast when we RPers have the option of engaging in full-scale pvp or opting out to PvE quest.

Role play is just that, you play the role of the character you pick. Argent Dawn has the same morons any server has. We get players calling themselves Davros Lord of The Darleks, who rush about Goldshire screaming "U all gay, m3 pwns u" just like very other server. We just get less of it I suppose.

That's kind of where I am at the moment in my understanding of RPG v Normal servers.
On a normal server I can do all the usual things, Quest, kill beasts, trade and have an occassional friendly dual. I can also elect to turn PvP on and go on Raids against the Horde, I can charge into their capital city and die a glorious and very quick death. So what am I missing that an RPG server has that I cannot already get on a Normal server? I'm struggling to see the point of a RPG server at the moment. :unsure:

RPG to me is about always staying in character, not talking about the recent footie match.
You might suffer from some lag but you find a in character way of explaining your lapse.
Its also about creating a persona/story for your character. Some would play the grumpy dwarf or a snappy rogue with a history of mental illness.
If you wanted to start something like tis you could right a short biograpghy of your character, where he/she was born, what where there parents, brothers/sisteres etc.
I played DaOC and I started a character with an in game brother (or at least we played that), although I was actualy orphoned and found by his parents after an Orc ambush attacked my family while traveling to Camelot. This can lead to my character having great hatred towards all Orcs, I can play on that and often lead to me allways dying when i refuse to run from an Orc train.
its very hardto play in-character on a non RPG server. But when everyone else is playing in character it can be alot of fun.
Edit: just read smiledons post, he could probably explain proper RPG style play better then me. How about it Smiledon, why not start a thread about your character and his history/adventures etc :)

If you want to get down to brass tacks, there is no difference apart from a code-of conduct, a way of playing the game, an ethos. In that respect it's like comparing TCS with public CS. After trying RP you can't go back because, at the end of the day, RP is how these games were meant to be played - immersive yet still fun. Pure escapism. Sure, we still get fools who don't RP, but, to be fair, they are few and far between, and when they do pop up they are roundly chastised. I have even seen people kicked from groups for saying things such as "lol", "np", "rofl" etc.
I love meeting up with Smilo whenever we are in the same zone - not to talk about films or footie, but to have a conversation in character about our make believe world. I do the same with guildmates (I have a very heavy RP-based guild) and guild meetings in the pub at SW Park are great events. We even had 2 members who got married. I sat in the corner drinking red wine as I'm a sulky and brooding yet highly intelligent warlock who has few social skills (life imitating art eh ;) ). Sure, some on here may laugh and think "how sad", but to me it was a joy.
We too can do everything you can, but Blizzard has an RP policy (read it on the WOW RP forum) that echoes what you do here with dmw. For someone who plays CS "the way it was designed to be played" then I think you (and most people on here) would like it if they tried it.
Nicely put and no don't worry I won't write a two thousand word post on role play here.
The TCS v CS analogy is good except we all probably feel CS is a weaker experience compared to our beloved TCS. I don't think anyone is suggesting PvE or PvP are weaker forms of WOW that RP. They are different. Chimpy and Jamoe have it right though role play offers additional features over normal play. If those features are of value to you then you play on a RP server an if not then you don't.
As an example and to stop me writing a those two thousand words I'll do a quick description of Wednseday nights in character guild meet. The Axe & Beard meet at Bruuks in the Military Ward of IronForge. We sit about drinking huge amounts of ale and chatting about all kinds of in game rubbish. Out of character we use guld chat to talk about the guild and issues related to it. Then we stock up on ammo, firewood, ale and grub and set of at a brisk walk towards Dun Modr. Twenty five or so Dwarves and Gnomes all marching out of Ironforge, through Dun Morough, Loch Modan and finally up into the Wetlands is quite a sight. On the way we chat, kill stuff and have ram and mechostrider races. Finally up at Dun Modr we assault the Dark Iron Dwaves who hold the town and butcher them all. Then it up with the camp fire, out with the ale and more chatting, larking about and killing Dark Irons. No one completed a quest, made any money or gained a single XP or honour kill. But we had a great old time. Then we stamped out the fire, hacked to death a few more baddies and then it was off home to IronForege for a nightcap and bed. All in character and lots of fun.
AS Tealeaf said our server is identical to every other server. The only difference is what people are doing on it. Ours is a consistent in character world and that's about it.

Well I think South Africa is great - going out after dark isn't a problem, there are simply places you don't go, just as much as in london, and you have to be more aware, if that means sinking one or two less jars then so be it.
It's a great way of life: the braai, rugby, cricket and beer culture is right up my street, and I ahve property and family out there so the actual costs once I'm out there aren't that high!
I must disagree. I have walked all over London, at all times of the night. with out problem. The guy I was working out there with said I was in a "safe area" but I should not wander around after 10. You have to ask how safe when every window and door is barred.,every house has an armed response poster outside and every time you get in a car you get automatically locked in.
I'm sure if I had been in a tourist area or the centre of cape town, I would have a total different view of the place. but from where I was in the sticks, It wasn't great :(
As for the cost of living. it's a strange situation. you can go out for a nice meal with wine for a £10. but CD's still cost £10-15. It's basically all home grown products are as chip as chips. but euro imports are close to uk prices. The guy who was taking me around out the was driving a TT. which he paid over £30,000 for.
