Won't boot up. It tries to boot and gets to different stage each time (it doesn't even have the decency to lock up at the same place each time). I have booted from a bootable CD and that runs OK but from disk I couldn't even get into safe mode :(
Ran Partition Magic to check disk which reported that the "Volume had not been dismounted properly". A quick search on the web reveals that you should be able to fix this by booting from your XP CD, selecting repair and then typing "chkdsk /r" in console.
Regrettably this did not work for me and I am now going to have to try to work out what components are causing the problem :(
Wish me luck and understand if I'm not on the server in the next few days :dummy:
Good luck BB hope to see you back on the servers real soon.
OK
Hadn't touched PC until today as I was frustrated and didn't want to make things worse ;)
Today I opened the case, checked all connections inside - all looked ok therefore carried out the "BB approach to trouble shooting - step 1", namely remove everything and put it all back in the same place in case something wasn't seated correctly. I removed FAN, CPU, Memory, Graphics Card and Sound card and put them back in (carefully).
Rebooted computer, IT WORKS!
I am currently restoring last weeks Ghost Image (I had blitzed partition trying to get round the partition incorrectly dismounted error which was probably a red herring) and hope to be up and running tonight :) It takes a while to restore 80 Gb :(
Fingers crossed :)
Oh and thanks for PM Norm. Offer of help much appreciated.
I had a similar problem at the LAN.
After applying the latest nVidia drivers my PC wouldnt get past the POST screen, even after a switch off.
I reseated the gfx card and powered back on after 5mins. All was OK then.
Strange indeed.
Sometimes computers are weird stuff. Glad you have it fixed.
BB is back on line :D
