Title: Am I missing something obvious?
Post by: TeaLeaf on April 25, 2005, 02:29:29 PM
Ok, it looks like moving an obelisk is a difficult feat to achieve when the obelisk in question is huge, but it does beg a question.

Why is it that with the technology available to mankind in 2005 is it impossible to move an obelisk from Rome to Ethiopia without cutting the ancient monument up into three separate pieces, when the Italian army that removed it from Ethiopia to Rome during the second world war managed to move it there in one piece?

Go figure.  And then go read about it here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4472259.stm).

They didn't have 'Health and Safety' in those days. Nobody cared if you got your fingers trapped.

Having read the article, I would say it was probably originally transported by sea, not by air as they've done for the return trip    .  Why they didn't do it for the return trip, god only knows - better ask the new pope ;)

Couldn't they just post it (I bet that if they would have done that a part even got missing somewhere over the route  ;) ).

Weird that they have to cut it in 3 pieces for transport yeah...
