Just thought I would share this with you laddies.
Returning from the LAN, I had a few minutes to spare at Stansted. Went browsing at WH Smiths. Picked up the latest official Microsoft windows XP Mag. DVD cover disc had all these wonderful little proggies (some really good), including AppKiller from Palmersoft Software, owned by a guy called Greg Palmer who is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP).
Anyway, to make a long story longer, I loaded up Appkiller, a simple little thing, and it, first of all asked me to go to Palmersoft.co.uk to DL the latest version, which I did. Ran it again and it asked me which of the following it should block: Kazaa, eMule, eDonkey, etc, etc. Foine that was.
Anyway, me new Microsoft Antispyware program is set to run at 2 am every morning, and lo and behold, it found a file in the palmersoft called ktkbdhk.dll, described by MS antispy as a keylogger, high risk.
Banged off the following mail to Greg@palmersoft.co.uk:
"Having installed Appkiller from the current MSXP Magazine, and updating to a new version from your website, my computer ran the Microsoft Antispyware programme as usual at 2am. It turned up an unusual item: A keylogger from Appkiller? Or something it considers a keylogger, a file called ktkbdhk.dll, located in the Appkiller directory/palmersoft/appkiller/.
Please tell me that its not a keylogger, and if not, why does MSAntispy think it is? And if it is, please tell me that some other program dumped it there, although, since I visited the P'soft website yesterday, I have not loaded any other programs, nor have I been on any dodgy websites.
Your earliest reply would be appreciated. (I have also registered Appkiller on your site)"
Two hours later, now that was fast, got the following reply:
Hi Declan,
Thanks for contacting PalmerSoft and I apologise for any worry you have been caused. MS AntiSpyware has correctly identified ktkbdhk.dll as a keylogger. This file was used to facilitate the feature of allowing administrative access to the files that users create via AppKiller. Unfortunately it was discovered that some malware writers were also making use of this file, so we took it upon ourselves to rewrite the software, hence the update that you installed from our website.
You can delete the ktkbdhk.dll file from your system, as the latest version of the software does not need this file. Please also be assured that this file does not log keystrokes and store them to be sent back to anyone. While it can be used in this manner, PalmerSoft had simply used the feature of the file that would listen for specific key combinations, in the case of AppKiller. Ctrl - Shift - S - T O - P - M - E. Which was the command to enter the administration screen.
If you would like any further information, clarification or assurances please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards
Greg Palmer
I'm just posting this in case anyone has had the same problem, and to show the attention that Palmersoft show to their customers for FREEWARE apps. I like the man already.
Thankyou for your bank account and log-in details. We have moved your money already
so feel free to delete our keylogger as it has nothing more to do on your machine.
Thankyou for bringing this matter to our attention as we had forgotten we had your
passwords. Two hours was enough to cover our tracks.
