Title: tweaking traffic on a router...
Post by: suicidal_monkey on May 05, 2005, 10:47:20 PM
is there a way to allow one user to download/upload files while another user plays games, in such a way that the one playing games has a gradually decreased ping rather than a ping that varies between 20 and 500+ every half a second.

Basically the wireless file-sharing is obviously operating in bursts of large packets and the gaming wants a constant stream of smaller packets. is there a way to force the file sharer/wireless pc to use smaller packets?

Some routers (my Vigor2900 allows this) allow you to restrict bandwidth by protocol or port. Don't know if yours will.

There was a program called Bandwidth Controller which I downloaded for my older linksys router but I never ever used it in the end.

You can try it from http://www.bandwidthcontroller.com/ (http://www.bandwidthcontroller.com/)

hmmm, interesting, but I think (after a 30 seconds look... :) ) that program requires you to be running a server PC to do the gateway/router tasks? At the moment I'm running my house through a netgear DG834G and there's only me (wired) and a few (wireless) laptops, and only one of those laptops is on frequently and sometimes downloading.

Perhaps a client-side program that can be activated to break up big packets or to limit bandwidth or something?

I've got the same router as monkey and through extensive use and buggery with that router i dont tihnk it has such options.

But out of interest what downl0ads speeds do u get on the wireless connection? Mines only manageing abut 7k/s :(

not sure, I'm wired in to it. I think my flatmate was getting 7 down, 10 up more or less last night when he was killing my ping. Enough to stream the news at least...
