Title: Strange puta
Post by: killcrazy on May 11, 2005, 09:05:50 AM
hey,
i got a new motherboard to run my new cpu and did a fresh install of xp on it to make it happy.

new board - asus p4u800-x
new cpu- intel celeron d 320

after installing xp it took a wile to boot up each time. i updated the bios and its fixed that problem but another has poped up.
sometimes when i boot up my pc it displays the message:

Quotewindows cannot start
missing file """""

plesase use the xp cd and run a repair install.

im at college at the moment and ill write the actual message down later and post it later.

the funny thing is if i then turn off the pc and start up again its fine
and its also if i restart and not shut down its fine as well

any ideas?

regards
KC

My server does that....I think it's a hard drive on it's way out. But I'm prolly wrong.

My old PC did that and the HD went about a month after it started

Same problem, HDD failed shortly thereafter.  It almost seemed that the HDD seemed to not like a cold start - when the power had been on for a while it woudl then restart comfortably and no error, but when cold it would not boot.  COnfirmed as a HDD failure about 4-6 weeks later.

Sounds from the above answers that we have a suspect......bring him in for questioning Danno ;)

Might I suggest backing everything up now!

Keep your backup updated regularly until you can get a new drive or can confirm that it is not the drive.

Have you tried booting from your XP CD and running a repair? That should fix it temporarily.

Remove everything - memory, CPU, cables etc and put it all back in. It could be that something isn't seated properly.

On a side note have you checked the power cables? perhaps the HDD line is shared between too many other devices or something weird like that? Though usually it means no booting at all...

ive read that it could be a curopt format of my HDD,

would it work if i copyed all my files onto my other drive (slave drive)
then shut donwn and swap the drivers round making sure it boots form the better HDD then format the old 1, copy the files back over then swap the drives back over?

will it work??

this message only started when i changed my motherboard and ive read here (http://www.techspot.com/vb/archive/index/t-5352.html) that it could also be my IDE driver. im going to try restalling that first and ill keep you posted

Before you do anything - TAKE A COPY OF YORU FILES NOW!!!!!!

We're all here on tenterhooks waiting for your next post that says 'the PC won't boot, the HDD has failed and I haven;t yet got around to taking a backup of all of my files as I was reinstalling things and swapping cables to see if it fixed the problem'.

Copy them NOW.  You know it makes sense.

Have a look at this.

http://miataru.computing.net/windowsxp/www...orum/27132.html (http://miataru.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/27132.html)

Seem it could be a bios or try a reinstall with FAT32

it may be a daft question....but it is a kosher copy of xp isn't it?

sounds similar to what happened to a friend of mine with a dodgy copy of xp

Could be.

What file is missing. Any way you could manually copy that file to the HDD? (maybe put HDD in another PC as a slave drive?)

well im going to look in my bios for any strange settings,
its a proper xp disk  :P

the files is ntfs.sys

thie strange thing is that its only started playing up on my new motherboard,
which might suggest bios/driver problems. ive updated my bios to the latest tho

might be a silly question, but did you try this yet?

full-blown instructions on the repair process for fixing ntfs.sys...

Some people seem to think it was dodgy ram. Try running the pc with only one of the ram chips you have (I know you have at least two now! :)) http://www.gidforums.com/t-748.html?page=2&pp=15 (http://www.gidforums.com/t-748.html?page=2&pp=15)

i thinnk i might b on 2 something, chees mr monkey.

that 512mb ram you gave me - i installed it into the 3rd ram slot on my old motherboard (and it was fine), when i changed motherboards i put it into the first slot (nearist the cpu) adn i get the error, ill try swapping the 3rd and 1st  ram's around. will it have the stupid activation problem if i changwe the ram round?

try with only one stick of ram at a time...
Also check the ram timing settings aren't set too fast for the chips you have installed perhaps? Did this error just pop up when you got that ram from me or did it start happening before it was installed? My pc never had any trouble with it and it was using it right up until it got posted to you  still, try running your pc with only the old stick of ram and then with only the new stick of ram and check the timings (I can recommend SiSoft Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a=) for testing stuff)

edit: just altering the ram should not affect the activation (personally I've never had a problem with reactiavtion despite all the hardware switches I've made over the years. Only when shifting a hard drive from one PC to a completely different one!

i swapped the slot 1 ram (512 stick) with the 3rd slot one (256 stick) and it seams to have fixed it  :D  .its been off for 3 hours and when i turned it on it was fine.
thanks for the help everyone - you all are a HUGE help

so i bought a new HD for no reason
