Post by: killcrazy on May 12, 2005, 07:07:26 PM
will this work?:

burn my C: (systemm HDD with windows on) to a disc image and saving it on a different HDD
then format the C: on a different comp
burn the image back to the drive
put it back in the comp

will it then load thte original windows again?

Well, I had a load of fun with something like this today.

Start: 08:30am
Used Drive Image 2002 to replace a HDD in one of our machines.
The image itself went fine, but the system would not log in with the new HDD as the system HDD.  It turned out that Windows activation was stopping it logging in (after a successful boot up) as it wasn;t happy with its activation code info (i.e. some hardware had been replaced).
The resolution to this is of course a Windows Repair - which as we all know is not in the Windows Recovery Console, but it is several choices into the 'please blat my hdd and do a new instal of windows' route.
First repair went fine, but then when I logged in a found that it had assigned D: to the system drive and not C:.
A couple of trips to regedit later and the drive was C: again but this time the PC would not boot.
Windows repair procedure started again.  This time it hangs becsue it apparently can't find the entry point for GetIUMS in the dll.
Research cure for this problem and apply.  Windows repair procedure starts again.
Currently: 12:30pm - the PC is still in repair mode and I am going for lunch as it is taking 30 mins to decide that whilst it would like to join the domain it is already a amember and therefore is trying to do the job twice, grrrr :(

So the answer to the above post's question is a Yes, No, or Maybe.  And that's about as clear as Microsoft want the answer to be for you.

T'hoping the job will finish soon'L.

I'm confused:

Copy to C: to an image
image is on Drive 2
take out C:
format c:
put C: back in (You'd have to do this to get the image from Drive 2)
restore the image to C:

If that's the path, you've taken crap, copied it away, formatted the drive and then restored the crap or taken the mud out of the kitchen, mopped the floor and then brought the mud back in.

Can you elaborate some on this?

What are you going to use to copy the drive. You can't just do this from explorer or a DOS prompt; you need disk imaging software such as Ghost, Drive Image or something similar.

You can get a freeware bootable CD loaded with tools (including disk imaging) from here (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) if you do not have the necessary software yourself. You need to read the instructions carefully to create the necessary image from the downloaded files but it is well worth it - an excellent tool.

or...
you could install windows clean and fresh on the new drive, update all your drivers and such, put on the useful programs you use (such as steam...), and then copy any user-files from the old drive to the new one before selling the old one on ebay... 8)

I like SM's idea.  If I have the chance to load Windows fresh, I do it.  Nothing like a fresh load.  I keep the install packages for my favorite programs/drivers on my linux box & on DVD so getting back up and running is getting quicker and easier.  If you're not changing hardware in the near future, build a fresh OS load, add your programs, sysprep the OS, make an image and store that image somewhere.  You can load a fresh image in minutes and be running in no time.  My .02
