Title: HIS 9800 pro for £94?
Post by: suicidal_monkey on May 23, 2005, 04:23:35 PM
intrigued by a couple of the deals on overclockers deals this week (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_This_Week_Only_25.html) and wondering if they really were good deals :)

specifically the HIS radeon 9800pro for £94 or so and the Hyundai 72D+ for £200 or so. How would the hyundai compare to that iiyama 435s do people think?

I am definitely in the market for a 17" (or 19 if the price&response is right!) in the next month or so. radeon 9800pro might be a bonus to replace my old 5600 which is struggling a bit with Source when I add too many bots

The Hyundai is an excellent deal a that price and TL was in raptures about the HIS 9800Pro about 18 months ago.

Both good deals :)

basic question - will a 9800pro let me run CSsource (and other similarly taxing games, ut2k4, farcry, doom3) at 1280x1024 ... I am definitely getting a TFT in the near future and I'd rather not have to rely on the aliasing ability of the tft monitor to scale lower resolution pictures and my 5600 is just about coping at 800x600 (when I add bots the pc starts to chug a bit - not sure if that's cpu or gfx though.

Then again, would a 9800pro be wasted on this pc spec?
xp2400+, nForce2 400 motherboard, 1gb pc2700 ram, good WD 120gb 7200 rpm hdd

I'm planning for this pc to last me some time yet...
don't suppose any of you lot has a 9800/pro or better coming up for a replacement/sale soon do you?

I think you will have problems at 1280 x 1024 on the 2400+ with the games you mentioned.  I had a 2600+ with the 9800 pro before upgrading to an AMD64 3400+.  Before the upgrade Doom3 and HL2 would stutter and pause at 1280 x1024 but now Doom3 and source can run really smoothly at that resolution.  I also upgraded my memory from 512MB to 1GB so not sure how much of the difference was due to CPU and how much memory.

I have a 17" TFT but I run ALL my games on 1024*768, below the monitors native resolution.  It really isn't a problem, not that I can see anyway :)
