Title: CS:S Jogs :S
Post by: killcrazy on May 26, 2005, 04:31:41 PM
when i play cs:s, hl2 or hl2:dm i get a really annoying jog ever 2seconds when playing the game. it constantly does it and its just long enough to destract me when playing

my spec:
mobo = Asus P4U800-X
CPU - Intel celeron D 2.4
1GB ram (pc2100)
Radeon 9800Pro 128MB

ive tryed overclocking my graphics card, changing the settings in the game options, changing the ATI Catalist settings and i use the following cvas when the game loads:

cl_phys_props_enable 0
fog_enable 0
fog_enable_water_fog 0
r_rainsimulate 0
r_rainsplashpercentage 0
r_rainradius 0
r_shadows 0
r_eyes 0
r_teeth 0
mat_dxlevel 80

i even run it in Direct X8 ffs
the video stress test in cs:s is a average of 53FPS
anyone had the same problem?

regards
KC

edit:
on ATI tool the priview box (the red fury one) also joges at the same rate

If it's anything like my problem, it's nothing to do with video. It's down to the way HL2 caches sound files.

have you overcome the problem?

would changing the settings for ausio in the direct x diagnostic tool work?, maybe changing it to standard acceleration?

Have you tried the Steam Support Areas (http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=forums)?

Oh wait, not just caching of sound files. Also caching of textures. I found that turning texture detail down from high to medium helped a bit, and as a response to the problem Valve patched in an additional couple of cvars to help, though I didn't notice any difference with them. I can't remember the names, but they start "mat_" and are something to do with forcing something.

edit:

"mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware [0,1] - If set to 1, attempts to force texture information into your Video RAM at the start of a level, alleviating any stuttering in the game. Note, this setting was introduced with the "stutter fix" patch. If you find stuttering has increased, set this to 0 and try the other stutter fixes below."

What is the AGP Aperture set to in your PC BIOS? Recommended values are 64 or 128Mb. other values should (generally) be avoided.

its set to 64 at the moment. ill try it with it set to 128

edit:
ok it turns out that my bios was set to 32mb, but i cant change it - well i can but it just resets itself every time back to 32 even when i save and exit

it looks like thats where the problme lies, just gotta sort the bios out now

ive just recieved a reply from asus:
QuoteDear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS UK Technical Support Department.

That is normal, we have locked the option to enhance compatibility with centain VGA cards. This should not impact on the overall performance of your system, please do not worry abou it.

regards,

ASUS UK Technical Support Department

my message to them was as follows:

Quotein the "advanced \ chip configuration" menu i cannot set the AGP Aperture size to a vale other than
32MB.
i can select the different values, but if i save the bios with it set to 128MB for example, then exit and
restart it returns to 32MB.
i have also had this problem on bios version 1007.

i look forward to your response.

so acording to them thats not the cause of the joggy css
