Folks.. Could really use your advice.
I've just received an unexpected bonus and while I could easily see the money go to our bills, I'd much rather spend it on a new TFT to replace the bohemouth 20" CRT that I keep dragging to the LANs especially since my better half has suggested I get this for myself.
My budget is to keep it well under a grand which gives me plenty of scope. I'm looking for at least a 19" screen and it must be from a reputable company (I've had an IIyama monitor for >4 years). TL mentioned something regarding GtG response times vs BtW which is commonly quoted but I'm a bit confused.
Thanks for the input!

From experience. Highly delighted. I think you were sitting next to it at the lan. Browne was using it. Not expensive either (http://www.ciao.co.uk/Samsung_SyncMaster_913N__6093023/TabId/4)
GtG and BtW response times can differ by quite a bit. What that means is although one pixel can switch from fully on to fully off (white to black) when you are watching, say, a yellow object moving around on a red background, you might see a blue trail/shodow/blur following the yellow object (NB colours are probably completely incorrect, but you get the idea?) so ideally you want fast GtG response times as well.
I'm aiming to get a TFT soon myself (hooray for still getting birthday presents! :D ) but personally I'm unsure of the 19" options at the moment (although they're getting better fast!) because the monitors still only have the same number of pixels as 17" monitors (1280x1024 typically) so you get smaller pixels (more detail-per-square-cm?) and the response times only recently got as good as the 17" panels. Of course my budget would be stretching to go to 19" over 17" so that's a major reason too!
I've been looking at the Hyundai 72D as my choice, or possibly the iiyama 435 instead. I did notice a couple of decent sounding 19" panels on the overclockers thisweekonly page...£300-£350 I think they were...
We have a couple of Viewsonic's and would swear by them, the colour and image are superb and will definately buy again.
As you probably know the tft market has come on a pace since we bought them and the Viewsonic would again be my "choice" buy at the moment with a 8ms response time, 170 degree viewing angle and 800.1 contrast ratio and three years onsite warranty......available from OcUK for the sum of £381.82 inc
Viewsonic VP191B 19" LCD Monitor - Black or Silver

There isa nice article that focuses on the Viewsonic offerings in particular just here (http://www7.graphics.tomshardware.com/display/20050526/index.html). Worth a read.

Thanks, just found it myself. Still not convinced about buying a ViewSonic as I've been so happy with my IIyama for so long.. Need to keep looking for a bit.
Guys what's more important:
Contrast Ratio or GtG times? or do they go hand in hand?
They kind of go hand in hand - if you have super fast GtG response and a lousy contrast ratio then you'll be disappointed - and vice versa.
TL.
OH and what about brightness? The spanky new Viewsonic ones only have 250 (whatever they are) some I've seen are 450 thingamajigs..
Higher is always better with the brightness cd\m2 as with the ratio while the response time should be lower.
the reason for my recommendation for that Viewsonic is a good combination of all three, a nice price, iseal for gaming and .........it's a Viewsonic!!
  :dribble: :worship:
Same reason for going with AMD really........you do want the best, don't you Ninja? <_<
Thanks all for the help. Norm couldn't find the stock so I've gone with Overclockers £393 delivered.
I'll let you know what I think of it once it arrives.

I asked this question as couple of months ago and following some advice here plumped for the viewsonic VX912B
(http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/lcd19.html (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/lcd19.html))
The specs are here:
Viewsonic VX912B X Series 19" LCD Monitor - Black/Silver (MO-014-VS)
This large format LCD monitor is for all those who enjoy a clear aesthetic design. But it doesn’t only impress with its CLASSIC, TIMELESS STYLING and ELEGANT SIMPLICITY. Its inner values are every bit as attractive, with HIGH BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST providing EXCELLENT IMAGE QUALITY. Thanks to the VERY FAST RESPONSE TIME of 8 MILLISECONDS, the VX912 ensures even films, games or DVDs are shown fluidly. This model is additionally equipped with both an analogue and digital input.
- 1280x1024 Optimum Resolution
- 550:1 Contrast Ratio
- Viewing Angle 160° horizontal, 160° vertical
- 8ms Response Time
- 270 cd/m2 Brightness
- One Analog Inputs
- One DVI-D Input
- DVI Cable Included
- 3 Years On-Site Warranty
For me the digital input was important (for CS) as well as the super fast response times.
I was sceptical about these until I bought one. Having tried it I bought another for the office I was so impressed (better than the beast of a 21" crt).
I rarely recommend things but in this case I would give it a big thumbs up....

Looks really rather interesting!
I like the sound of the 191b but I don't like the pricetag much! Any idea if there are any 17" monitors with similar technology/specs that might be more affordable? I had a peek at the viewsonic 171b but it doesn't appear to have the overdrive/gtg technology built in?
one thing that the 191b panel does have which quite a few other tfts don't is the viewing angles so that you (and others) can watch movies on it without losing much picture quality. Add that to the almost flat (sub)16ms response times it gets and it sounds like a winner? Only the price is killing me! I'm looking more ni the (sub?)£250 bracket... so far the iiyama 435s and the hyundai 72D are on my shortlist and I think probably the viewsonic 171b too now, but none of them have the nice specs of the 191b (or do they? :))
Now in and in play..
Box rece'd OK but there were two scrapes on the side of the box. I've taken photos as evidence. Everything inside was OK. All contents were there including two monitor cables (anologue / DVI) which I thought was a nice touch. I wasn't however impressed with the European power cable (IE NOT UK) format.
Came with two CD's and a very small manual / guide. Everything is on the disk.
First thing I noticed was the quality. The design is very simple yet classic. Obviously the foot-print was a big selling point for any TFT. Looks good on my desk, etc.
Setup was a breeze. CD worked well instaling all the software but I did have to go back and install the drivers. I would have thought this would have been done in the process. Set the resolution to Max and I was off. Brightness was all the way up and damn it was a bit too bright. Turned is down to my liking.
The benefit of this TFT that I like is the fact that I can plug both of my rigs into it (no more swapping of monitor cable at the LAN!!). Switching inputs is easily done on the front panel.
Colour is just as good as my CRT but it's the performance that matters. Played Halo for a few hours and didn't notice any bluring or anything out of the ordinary. Plays just like my CRT.
Thought I'd try some AVI's on for size. I played a couple of those BMW movies (Star and PowderKeg) but to my disappointment I noticed several pixels flickering Blue and Red. **** Perhaps you can help me here and see if your copy of these clips do this **** I need to drop in a DVD later today to see if I have issues.
Concern is that something's not working correctly due to the AVI performance. Would appreciate your comments. The flickering pixels did not occur during Halo so I'm wondering if I'm missing a setup or it has something to do with the resolution of the movies (hoping it's the latter).
Thanks peeps for the advice.

the review on toms hardware (see tealeafs post) mentioned something about pixels flickering during movie playback, something to do with the overdrive technology pushing the pixels up to too high a brightness first to obtain the speedy response so if you have a rapidly changing background (black-white-black or grey1-grey2-grey1-grey3) you might notice flashing pixels. Dunno if that's what you saw. Will check those avi's on my work tft now... :)
A posssible solution: Try reducing the number of colours under display options from 32 bit to 16 bit (24-bit if that option is available would be perfect!) as the 191b's LCD panel is a 16 million colour display (2^24)
If you are running in 32 bit colour your monitor will use dithering to create the other 8 bits worth of colour. Essentially changing the colour of a pixel between two other colours very quickly to try re-create the colour it cannot actually display. This might cause "sparkle" on "colour masses" especially during video playback.
You yourself probably won't notice much difference in the number of colours though ;)
I'd be really interested to know if this made any difference? 8)
Not necessary. It plays DVD's perfectly also my Pr0n files so what more could a guy ask for..
