Title: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice CPU Overclocking

It costs about £100 to buy an Athlon64 3000+ Venice (Venice being the newer 90nm process with SSE3 & On-Silicon-Insulator technology, as opposed to the older Winchester 90nm process used in the Winchester core or the even older 130nm Newcastle core).

The A64 3000+ Venice runs at 1.8GHz on air cooling.

The A64 3000+ Venice also runs at 2.8GHz on air cooling.

The difference?  Apart from 1GHz extra clock speed is the fact that the former is the stock speed and the latter is the overclocked speed.  The 3000+ a fast-ish Venice, but you will recall that later this year all the AMD A64s are going to migrate to the 90nm process, so the current A64 Venice *has* to be good enough to scale up and run very much faster - and it does :D

Not to be a know-it-all git, but this is too far up my alley to be ignored. Actually it's Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) and the reason for it is to eliminate parasitics when reducing feature size. The trick is using a non-conductive substrate as opposed to regular silicon wafers.

I hope you have enjoyed this lecture on semiconductor devices. We will take a short brake and next time we will discuss some methods of fabrication...
