I was reading through the thread to ninja's question (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9810) and some of th related articles adn the viewsonic 191b appears to be the sort of thing to look for with a sub-16ms response accross the board instead of just at the iso measuring point? First question - does anyone know of a 17" monitor with similar technology/flat-response-time.
I might be able to afford the 191b but I'd rather not spend quite that much! £200-£250 would be a nicer range, so I guess that'd mean a 17" monitor? Models that have caught my attention are the viewsonic 171b, the iiyama 435s and the hyundai 72D.
On a related note - is buying a Powercolor 9800pro for £76 a good buy? It's on the ocuk deals this week...I figure I'll want to run games like CS-S and BF2 at 1280x1024 if I get a TFT! of course my cpu is old and weak (2400+) but I'm hoping it'll hold out! Problem is - if I buy the 191b I will be nulikely to be able to afford the graphics card (and possible cpu upgrade to 3200...)
When making major purchases I tend to do a matrix to make sure I get the most for my hard earned cash. This little puppy came out quite well and is a 19" sub £250 at the moment

hope this helps <_<
ps...and at that price a 9800 is a VERY good buy
looks nice but for two things (I'm picky when it comes to money!) No DVI input and, from tomshardware:
QuoteFor video, on the other hand, the situation is still as bad as it was for the previous two models. The viewing angles are very narrow and video noise is still present.
I do watch quite a lot of TV and video on my PC and the 191b's viewing angles really appeal - I was trying to find a 17" monitor with as good a spec as the 191b but I'm struggling! Thought 17 inchers were ususally ahead of the 19 inchers in terms of new technology?
So, I'd like DVI, good gaming performance and good video viewing angles (and quality - would be interested to know if other people running the 191b have similar issues as ninja and the BMW films...?) I'm happy to have a 17" monitor as then I should have money left over for the 9800 pro ;)
Watch quite a few movies on my V181b (25ms) and have never experienced that problem during any movie....then again I won't use that nasty Quicktime programme if you paid me!!. Only time I get a problem is running games with everything on but that is due to my gfx card.
If you must have a 17" with DVI (have ran mine on both and doesn't appear a major difference) then second on my list was this

Sony SDM-HS75P X-black 17" LCD Monitor - Black (MO-009-SO)
but it comes out at £287 so not sub £250
you pays your money!! :)

you certainly do!!!
I think if I decided to pay that much I'd get the Hyundai L90D+ (only £20 more!) though...I must say I'm leaning towards the iiyama (even if it doesn't have an adjustable base!) although I can't find much in the way of good reviews on it! I'd love a tomshardware review of it to see the actual response etc 8) hmmm.
Sony X-Black screens rock several phat ones. Simutaneously.

Note the direct flash reflection on the screen and you can still read it...
D "phat one" M
D "the illustrious one" M has spoken :worship:
Now get your scrawny butt down the shop and buy one......Bl**dy Llama nonsense!! <_< :D
and what's your commission at the sony store for securing sales eh? :narnar:
I do believe it will be cheaper to buy online than at the Sony store....so commision is zero
share the love :huggy: :winkiss:
true, true. ;)
I have to say though, that I can buy an iiyama 435s plus a 9800pro for the same price as just the sony, and I don't think the 435 has any special disadvantages, ...at least none reported from those gamers I know that have it thus far!
Ah, but your changing the goalposts....viewing angle, contrast ratio etc......it's all getting a bit wooly now....so perhaps you better buy that llama after all!! <_<

tbh I reckon the only monitor (from the shortlist I had...) that was within my spec was the 191b except that it was a "tad" over budget and might possibly not be rgeat for video (sigh). I've talked myself out of requiring some features and stuff...but I'm still uncertain why the sony is better than the 3 I had in my shortlist? Reviews I found on it were pretty mixed, and although it was generally rated pretty well (particularly for response time) it also got some less favourable comments...
Games, videos, general work...I might survive without the viewing angles of the 191b, just have to be careful with angling it towards where I happen to be sitting!
 besides, the "llama" is better looking than anything $ony make!
SM. I've played a number of other AVI's as well as a DVD and they run perfectly without any "pixel blinking" as I've earlier reported. So Far So Good as they say.

The 9800 is no doubt a reasonable price for the card, but whether you want to spend the money on that just yet is a different question. I personally would not spend the money on a 9800 at the moment as it will not do as well running some of the modern games as current generation graphics cards. Spend the money on one or the other - either go for a good graphics card and delay the monitor purchase or buy the monitor and delay the TFT purchase. If you compromise then you'll not be happy at the end of the day as I doubt the 9800 will run BF2 at the resolution you want with any degree of comfort. There is a huge THG review of AGP gfx cards and their relative performance - it's worth you reading that to see juyst how much punch you'll get for your purchase (or not as the case may be).
I run a 9800Pro in this machine and it will cope with CS:S......just. I doubt it will cope with BF2 in a mob fight at the resolution you mentioned.
Also, remember the DVI slot - if your current gfx card does not have one then you'll almost certainly be disappointed with the picture from your TFT until such time as you plug it into a DVI slot. Maybe defer both for a while until both can be purchased together?
My 2 cents.
TL.

Too late...card was already ordered by the time you posted! :D Turns out is is a Powercolor 9800 pro
AIW so I get analogue tv and software and stuff too! Just as well because my DVB-T card scarcely gets a good enough signal where I live. fuzziness is better than the mess of a digital tv hard-fail!
CS-Source Stress test:
@800x600
fx5600 (medium-high settings) 56-62fps depending on the nvidia driver quality settings
9800pro (high settings) 75fps
@1280x1024
fx5600 (medium settings) ~24fps
9800pro (high settings) ~66fps
[/SIZE]
My computer is now cpu limited I think, because I ran a server to test some gameplay with the 9800pro @1280 and noticed that with no bots I was sitting pretty with a good 50-60+ fps and the game ran smoothly, however with a bunch of bots my fps dropped to the low 30's and the game felt jerky.
The BF2 demo ran the single player quite nicely at 800x600, didn't have time this morning to try other resolutions or to set up a framerate monitor, but I will do so later to see how it does. Might have to try a mp server to check that the bots aren't sucking my pc dry of processing power too! :)
BF2 demo results (recorded with fraps on a locally run server, one player running about shooting, throwing smoke grenades, driving things etc etc)
800x600
medium: 45-50
high: 37
1280x960
medium:36-40
high: 25
custom(med/low): ~50
1600x1200
medium: 25
high: 15
not bad considering!
