I've just taken delivery of the following
Abit AT7-MAX2 mobo
Athlon XP 2700+ proc
1GB PC2700 ram
460W PSU
I've also got on backorder the new GeForce FX GFX card. (Should get it this month)
Now I just need to make sure that my existing GeForce2 Ultra is true AGP 4x compliant, as the mobo only takes 1.5v boards. (Time to get my multi out :))
All going well I'll have a nice fast system to play with, but I bet it upsets XP :)
Oh thats not fair........theres me still waiting for delivery of my bits and yours turn up.......and then you have to rub it in as well!!
give us pore students playing on antiquated systems a bit of sypathy.
i still play on a 800mhz pc. till i get the h2o cooling system and oc it to about 1.4 /1.5 gig
Tasty, and i shall be trying all the old bits you throw out to try and fix my system. :D

The last time i saw his system it has some rather tasty coffee cup rings and half an inch of dust. Does that count?

As soon as I get my new GFX card in there I will.
As for cooling. I'm just using the stock AMD cooler with arctic silver. Currently at 42deg C, and rises to 45deg C under load.
OK Gandalf, you got all the parts and put them together. I can't be doing with all that so where is the best place to get a pre-built pc?
Best price but a choice of quality components and not crap like on board sound and integrated graphics etc...
I could do with some guidance as I am more of a pc user than fiddler and don't really know the best components out there.
I have £600 to spend on Case (fans pwr etc), mobo, RAM, HDDs, Graphics, Sound. No need for keyboards, mice, monitors, speakers etc..
I have currently a 1600+ XP proc
512MB of DDR
2 x 40GB HDDs
GEF 3 Ti 200
Audigy player
Motherboard of some description.
but could do with
around a 2400 or better proc (Athalon or Inter? - whats best?)
1GB DDR (whats the best type to buy?)
2 x 100GB + HDD (recommend a manufacturer?) - HDD space very important
GEF 4 Ti 4200 at least (any board makers recommended?)
Happy with my Audigy player but any recommendations?
NO idea about mother boards at ALL whats a good one?
Thanks in advance.

I am really starting to feel sorry for you mate. You seem to have had it all happen recently with the phone bill etc... but at least you have your health.
Looking back to my student days, I never had a pc at all, or a car, or a phone come to think of it. So I suppose it isn't all that bad. I used to have to work as a gimp for a living whilst playing organ in the local church and running a local drug rehab centre.
I got my first car when I was only 35 and only recently got my first pc at the tender age of 57. I now live off the government in the form of unemployment benefit, houseing benefit and disability benefit. All in all it earns me £1500 a month and a free modified Renult Clio which was a bit tricky to drive at first but after I started using my chin to stear it was a doddle.
I don't really need another pc upgrade but want to research so I can get one later in the year.

Overclockers is good for parts.
Mesh. Not sure on, never used their systems.
Evesham. Probably one of the best manufacturers out there. The machine I've just upgraded was an Evesham PC and I never had a single problem with it.
TBH you will never get a better deal on a PC than a pre-built system from a major manufacturer as they buy all their components in bulk and can therefor charge a lot less for the systems.
And if you are researching for the future, don't bother. As any research you do now will be irrelevant in 3 months time. As is the way with technology.
ok, an update.
I've now got on order one of the following.

the coolermaster cases are good i got a m8 with one.
but i personally dont like that window
from what i have heard that grafix card is good.
I've got the saphire 9000.... its a pretty nice card..... esp considering its cheapness.
Nice case :D And I like the window too :D
First performance tests are good.

well, my case has arrived :)
Much fun was had fitting everything in. I'll get some lights in there later and get some images up on here for you all to drool over.
Oh, and the finish is amazing. It's a black coating with tiny bits of multi-coloured glitter in it. Very subtle, and looks great. The window is cool too. And the slide out mobo tray is a fantastic idea.
oh boy, is that where the motherboard along with cards all comes out in one peice?
had a server case like that, was really useful.
Yeah, get those pics in over the weekend.
yeah, thats it. You can install the mobo and cards onto the tray, then you can slide it into the case!
I'll try and do some photo's, but I have yet to get some lamps so may wait until then.
