Title: GPS
Post by: Armitage on June 08, 2005, 06:14:06 PM
I'm looking to get a gps system for the car. I'm not bothered if it is a PDA or dedicated. Aldi are selling a system for £229  (http://uk.aldi.com/special_buys/product_231.html)

Anybody know if it is any good? or of any better deals about at the moment. would be appreciated.

Thats a decent price. The place to find out if the kit is any good is pocketgpsworld:

All GPS mapping solutions have weaknesses. Tom Tom is prob best of a bad bunch.

GPS in a car is a lot less distracting than a phone or a passenger! Additionally it gives you a chance of being in the correct lane early when you are driving in unfamiliar areas thus reducing the mad swerves some people seem to make at the last minute. Additionally it has voice so you don't really need to look at it that much, mine gives warnings such as "in 200 yds roundabout, take second exit"

Couldn't be simpler :D

Actually the UK website is a bit slow. Try the .com website (link below) much faster for me anyway:

Not in my experience.  I see drivers using them every day, weaving all over the road at 70+ while peering at the screen.  Equally as bad in slow-moving traffic queues while I'm filtering past - I mean, WTF are they looking for - a giant hand to pick them up and lift them out of the traffic?

Quite so.  They outnumber the ones who do by about 9:1.  You know that advert with people wandering around with their eyes closed?

There have been probs but I can't remember which TomTom it was with. I think it might have been the 300 where there was power issues or something. Think its fixed now. The other problem is with mapping errors or roads that have been altered since the maps were made. All solutions have this problem. However, Tom Tom have (at last) allowed you to buy newer updated maps - not cheap but if you need them as new as possible then its a solution. Seemingly you can download for 1 year after purchase:

I took a wrong turn for fun at one point. Another bonus with sat nav is it doesnt whinge when you go the wrong way. Apart from that i think we did lose the sats for a short while. Other than that I dont recall any problems getting to March using it. My memory aint as good as it was mate, but would you really pitch your memory against mine?

I have Tom Tom 5 on a DELL X50V PDA...........it maybe costs a little more but it is sure as hell worth it.

I travel a lot for business and i find it invaluable to take me straight to a place i have never been......or for diving off into backroads when there are motorway probs.

Add to that a wireless PDA and it had pretty much everything i need.

We use TomTom at work as well, and *most* of the time it proves pretty useful. However if you're going into deepest darkest Cumbria then it does sometimes take you down backroads that are too narrow for your vehicle (as in they're footpaths...), or tell you to turn onto a minor road which turns out to be (literally) a dirt track across a field, used by farmers in tractors and uncrossable by our Discoveries, though the Defender can manage it :).

Also it did on one occasion expect to me drive off a motorway bridge onto the motorway, which would have been quite interesting. It was a motorway bridge unaccociated with a junction...

Excellent....

Remember you cna change the 'sound' that the POI makes to ensure that you're aware when you're driving near one.

You can also set it to only warn you if the speed camera is 'on route'..... the upside of this is that you won't get alerted should there be on on the other side of the road but the downside is that some of the newer camers can rotate to either direction. I leave mine on just in case.

Finally - there's load of other handy POI's available out there on pocketgps - so check to see if there's anything you're going to like.

GL, HF and if you got any other questions let me know.

POIEDIT is the way to go for speed camera databases ( and many otherthings ).....automatically synch with online databases...for free.

I have Tom Tom 5....only time i've had anything strange with the routing is when i've used "shortest" route and not "fastest".....there is 1 local route in particular it would like me to use in this mode....and it's a footpath.......
