I've posted this somewhere else but thought id post it here aswell just incase.
Ive been trying to connect to steam for 3 days with no luck.
So today i decided to try the standard ADSL modem, and it worked! i got straight onto the server list.
The router im using is a Netgear DG834v2. Anyone know anything that might stop steam connecting?
Save your settings,re-set router, then check for new firmware from netgear online user interface. :) Not same problem but mine had started to drop me from cs,and so far firmware update has cured it. <_<
Check your connection settings aswell. Sometimes mine is automaticly set to 56k...
And I have ADSL for over 2 years now....
I have the latest firmware.

think you mean bent? :P
This page (http://www.longview.eclipse.co.uk/netgear/) usually has the latest beta firmwares for that router if the most current released version on the Netgear Support Page (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/dg834gv2.asp) isn't working for you.
I'm running beta release 2.10.17 on my V1 DG834G and it's as solid as a rock.
Edit: D'oh! It looks like Netgear have 2.10.17 available on their support page. Oh well, the first link usually has the latest firmwares before Netgear post them up on their site.
I had an issue (that steam blamed on router firmwear, yeah right like its nothing to do with the latest update you fangos! and i only thought it worked before steam updated!!!!!)
Anyway i digress. I solved the problem of being kicked 30secs into the game and recieveing various console message about invalid whats its by adding some commands to the advanced launch options in steam for each game. I'll have to dig them up.
I didn't solve the problem by changing anything on my router which was FINE and hadn't be CHANGED in fricking months!

I havent touched anything either.

Is the standard ADSL modem that works USB or Ethernet?
and
A complete long-shot I realise... Do you run a software firewall? Would it have been updated over the weekend? And if so, is Steam still on its list of trusted applications?
The modem is USB.
Took my spyware proctection and firewall off. Still didnt connect to steam.
I'm running a DG834Gv2 and it's still no old firmware (1.04.10 or something like that) and it's not got any worries!
Im this close ---><--- to formatting.
I guess i can contain myself until i try the thing that flib said.
I decided to connect to steam using my modem again.
I got to the sever list no problem even had a round on Razer against the bots, I disconnected from server but left CZ running.
I then Disconnected from the internet and Unplugged the modem, then i used my router to connect to the Internet.
I tried connecting to a server again only to be confronted with:
"Your steam ticket has expired"
So i enter my password and it freezes just like before. In console it says:
Invalid STEAM UserID Ticket
Connecting to 217.112.88.90:27015...
Connection accepted by 217.112.88.90:27015
BUILD 2834 SERVER (0 CRC)
Server # 57
Invalid STEAM UserID Ticket
Connecting to 82.197.65.246:27018...
SteamGetEncryptedUserIDTicket failed (1)
reason-- SteamGetEncryptedUserIDTicket() failed with error 1: Steam is busy, please try again later
Have enabled disabled any port forwarding or firewall aspects on the router recently? Looks like not all the info is getting in/out.
Nope, havent touched it.
tried opening some ports today but still no luck.
This might be what your experiencing and steams responce to it. Personally i think its steam with the problem.

solution to my problem. (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=7962&hl=advanced)
It may not be the same problem but its worth trying it out.
Have a look at these (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=SteamGetEncryptedUserIDTicket%28%29+failed+&btnG=Google+Search) search results, some of them will point you in right direction.

If you are unable to remove the blockage and you are unable to repair your installation then often the only last option is to re-install your operating system.
DEEP JOY!
I don't see why you would have to reinstall XP. Try uninstalling Steam and reinstalling that rather than the whole OS
Doris already tried uninstalling steam. No luck.

Probably because of his hax  ;)
Googled 4 it?
Yes, but it just bought up some noobs talking about how they cracked steam.
Try kicking the router, or putting it on its side...
It might be a stab in the dark, but have you got a normal modem? If so try dialling in with that and then see if Steam runs.
If that works then you're back to the router config.
I must admit that I've only got a two ports forwarded on mine, TCP 15100 and 15101.
He's allready said it works fine on his normal USB modem.
Interestingly enough, i've got port 1200 and from port 27000 to 27015 forwarded on mine, no sign of anything in the 15000's.
I dont have any ports forwarded on mine as the router supports SPI :)
Ok what's SPI.
Well if it works with the USB modem then it's gotta be the router setup. What are Doris and Hippy playing at. get it sorted lads.
Obviously you need to get a decent router and/or sort your ports out.
Either that or you've not set it up right.
Does your router act as a gateway and assign IPs? If so make sure you set your network card to obtain the IP address automatically for the TCP/IP protocol. Maybe that's your problem? Have you been to any LANs where you set an IP?
SPI - Stateful Packet Inspection. => router allows in packets that are legitimate responses to outgoing requests => means you don't have to open ports to play a game :)

they have the same router as me net gear DG834 v2 i have no probs
As opposed to rebooting your router is there an option to reset it? You would obviously need to reconfigure it but I have had routers where the settings became corrupted and you had to do this.
Worth a try?
Yup, yried restoring factory settings wirth no luck.
Just about to reinstall steam
Re-installed steam AND it still doesnt work, same login freeze.

When we first got the router we didnt need to open ANY ports to play.
The IPs are obtained automatically.
No LANS either.
Just tried logging on using Vinces router and it does the same.
so it must be something to do with the ISP, Right?
I remember a couple of years ago, I ended up having 2 ISPs, as one would only recognise some servers and some others.
This was in the days of WON, but it could indeed be that. Get on the blower and have a word...
ITS FIXED!!! YAY[/SIZE]
Yep, i fixed it.
so....what was wrong?

It was broken. :D
'twas the WAN setup.
For some reason AOL recomends you change some of the settings.
Still dont understand why it worked before :S
Not that the online technical supprt was any help :ranting: All they said was
"this is not a problem with AOL, please contact your game retailer."
OR
"Im sorry we are only trained to deal with software issues"
