Hi all,

I'm would like to run a 50 metre (150") network cable (Some externally) to connect a machine to a router which doesn't work on wireless.

Firstly, is that OK in princple? that sort of length.
Secondly, anyone know where I can buy such a length.

I've looked on the the net but can't seem to find it.

Edit: I'm also not sure what sort of network cable I would need to connect from a PC to a router. There seems to be Cat5 normal, Cat5 x-over and Cat6. Can someone please advise?

Normal Cat5 cable should do the trick, and 50m should be ok.  I hear that anything up to about 200m is ok, after that you'll start to lose signal quality.  Then again, I'm no expert :)

I think for a piece of cable that length, you're going to have to try a major hardware store.  I hear B&Q Superstores stock network cable.

Cat 5 standard is ok up to 100m then you'll need to add a repeater or switch or some device to boost the signale. Therefore 50m is fine.

You'll need cat5 straight (not crossover) which basically means you should have 568B connection at each end (see here (http://www.arcelect.com/10baset.htm))

I can't believe how relatively cheap they are when considering one pays £5 for a 2m cable.

I presume it's OK to be laid underground outside ?

I would put it inside some protective sheathing. I don't know how resistant to decay the outer coating is and you would also be hacked off if you put a spade through it :)

For underground put in Alkathene Water Pipe.  That way you can get a good long continuous run without joins.

The stuff posted above from screwfix needs joints which are usually only for above ground inside work.

you can also get cat5 cabling designed to go outdoors ... much heftier insulator on those! Not exactly sure where you get them though...

Thanks again for the replies fellas.

You lot were right about needing some sheilding or casing - I've checked and the normal cat5E cable is apparently porous - not very suitable for external use.

I eventually found a company who supplies external (PE) Cat5E Cabling here:
