Title: Spam harvesters
Post by: smilodon on January 13, 2003, 11:20:12 PM
Not exactly sure where to post this one so I'm playing safe in 'banter'  :)

Once again I think the new web site is great but here's a thought. I have no idea what the deadmen.co.uk e-mail inbox is like for spam but have you thought of masking the e-mails on the site with a java script rather than printing them clean in the code. I got an old domain of mine put on a spam list through a harvester picking my webmaster@ address (I think) and never got rid of the junk.

Just a thought  :?:

Can we also have 25 popup windows appearing every time we click on a link. Please code it so that at least 55% offer to increase the size of your penis, 25% offer to give you the full contact details of all the lonely women in your area and the other 20% guarantee that their credit card has the lowest interest rate.

Eye thenk ewe !!!

Gives the mailto link "E-mail here"
and would send an e-mail to webmaster@deadmen.co.uk
with the subject of "About the Deadmen Web Site"
and would start the e-mail message with "About your web site...."

Just the e-mail address would be

Another method that doesn't use java script at all would be to use this hex

Webmaster ("%77%65%62%6D%61%73%74%65%72%40%64%65%61%64%6D%65%6E%2E%63%6F%2E%75%6B)

Which would just give the e-mail address webmaster@deadmen.co.uk

Thanks Neutron.

I will try them out and see if I understand what is happening. *Sadako scratches his vegetable head in wonder regarding javascripts* :D

Well, I finally had some spare time to get into the anti harvester campaign. Now the Deadmen can be proud to say that we not only fight wars in CS but also against the bad bad bad e-mail harvesters. :D

Thanks once again Neutron.

Well, then they have harvested from either the forum or from some other page that you have used the adress on. On the pages that I have put up only mine, TLs and OBs adresses were available.

If you have it on your ICQ it will be harvested.

I started gettin TONS of spam mails as soon as my clan rejoined enemy down, and i mean like 6 a day EVERY day.  So as a test i changed my e-mail on ED to a diffrent account but the new account didnt get any spam mails.

It's pretty unlikely that you could have had your e-mail lifted from a forum like this one.  None of these web pages exist in the traditional sense of the word. They are greated on the fly from an SQL database. As soon as you close this window the page disolves into nothing. A spam harvester would have to be able to logon and read the pages (which it can't so you're safe) Likewise I would imagine that EB runs of a database and uses perl to build it's pages on the fly as well.

Of course there are a million other ways you can get junk mail

Hmm.. Me thinks he knows a little too much about these apparent "spam harvestors" IF they even exist.  I think we may have an insider job going on here.  8O

I know I've got some time on my hands but I'd starve to death if I tried to make money out of manually lifting e-mails off web sites. Although I've got yours ya cheeky whatnot

sometime when I can be arsed, I could move the deadmen domain to a mailserver I have that runs anti spam stuff.... would catch around 95% of the spam at least.
