Title: Odd Question
Post by: Jamoe on July 13, 2005, 10:38:39 PM
Anyone know how best to address the Vicar and his wife in an invitation?

Normal Guests are like Mr and Mrs A Smith etc

Odd question I know, but we are trying to invite the Vicar and his Wife to the Reception.

You want to check out Debrett's Guide for how to address Royalty and Officials

http://www.debretts.co.uk/ (http://www.debretts.co.uk/)

and more particularly

http://www.debretts.co.uk/etiquette/correc..._address.html#C (http://www.debretts.co.uk/etiquette/correct_forms_of_address.html#C)

Clergy
CORRESPONDENCE: On the envelope, "The Rev [John Smith]". The Reverend precedes any title (e.g. The Rev the Hon). It is incorrect to write "The Hon and Rev" or "The Rev Mr". Christian name or initials should always be shown. Commencement, "Dear Mr [Smith]" or "Dear Father [Smith]".
PERSONAL ADDRESS: "Sir.".

PS... edit: make sure that he's only a vicar and not a Dean / Provost etc - they're all addressed differently

PPS... A few weeks ago we went to a Wedding hosted by Sir William McAlpine and boy did I stuff up the introductions.... He's know as Bill but I think calling him Sir Bill when first being introduced didn't go down too well....  :lmfao:
