Title: just when i fix problem...
Post by: killcrazy on July 17, 2005, 10:09:14 PM
well after sorting out my comp and geting it working smoothly it has devoloped a new problem....

when im on the comp, playing games, chatting or on the internet it sometimes freezes for a few seconds, i then hear a click from a hard drive (like the sound of it turning on) and its fine again. it is really noticable when playing games and when searching throught my library on WMP. sometimes it happens frequently and other times it may not happen for a wile. i think the click is from my new Western digital HDD but im not sure. i  have checked my bios setting and turned unnessesary features off.

has anyone else had the same problem?

any ideas are appreseated

regards,
KC

p.s. i know my spelling is bad so dont complane

That sounds to me like the beginning of something terminal

I'd consider backing everything up as a precaution!

It *could* be your HDD is being powered down by your BIOS and the delay is when it has to spinup again to fetch data.

Tell your BIOS to leave it on all the time as a test.

It'll be in power management somewhere, also check power options in Control Panel

I have a Maxtor hdd that does the same "click" as it spins down when the power options turn it off.

ive looked all through the bios and found nothing.

i dont know if this is related but sometimes (more often than not) when i turn on my pc it hangs before the windows xp logo and loading bar is displayed, when this happens i have to restart the pc and its fine

also when i play cs:s after 15 to 20 mins of playing it freezes completly and i have to restart the pc.

i didnt not have these ploblems befor my new hard drive but im not sure if it had and warrante

regards
KC

Well their is something def wrong with your hard drive have you checked all the connections and have you tried changing the cables connected to it.

Get a program to diagnose your hard drive something like seagate's seatools should be good as its free this will test it for bad sectors/clusters, if there is a fault try taking it back to were you bought it. How long have you had it? Just make sure you have a backup of what you dont want to loose...

suffered some HDD power funnies before, got a fine screwdriver and squeezed the connectors in the molex to the HDD, ensuring a solid contact.

Then the funnies went away.

If you have a spare psu then use it what spec machine you got? Just seeing if it does not have enough power also...
