Title: Connection issues
Post by: A Twig on July 18, 2005, 01:01:32 PM
The only game I am having a problem in is BF2. I have a good ping to the server - between 25 and 35 usually, but I consistently get lag spikes and the "Warning no connection" or whatever it is that comes up.

Its making online play pretty difficult, cos you have to try and guess where you'll be when the lag spike stops. CS is absolutely fine, and all my other internet stuff works fine, is it something to do with packet size? Are there any BF2 tweaks?

My Internet is wirelessly connection to my router, but that hasn't been a problem, as it can handle up to 54 Mbps, although normally operates around 24, with excellent signal strength, and the ping is still fine.

Could the virus scanner be interfering, trying to scan the packets or something? (Probably a completely stupid thought but worth a try...)

I'm only running essential background tasks to play the game with, i.e. windows processes, my power management software, my Gfx card software and my software for the wireless link.

BB reckoned it's just the netcode, which is probably fair, but is there really nothing I can do?

I'm with BB on this one, which means the answer is a resounding no.  Sorry.  :(

but...I don't get (or don't notice) these lag spikes  I occasionally get the bad connection message but it's infrequent enough to rarely interfere with play. Maybe BF2 (and not other games) is doing something that doesn't agree with the wireless side of things - do you still get the same issues when you use good old cat5?

I was getting horrible jerky moments on the server but I sort of tracked those down to my pc just not quite being good enough to play at the graphics settings I was requesting. I've since made the game a little fuzzier and taken out luxuries such as shadows and dynamic lighting and it seems to be playing pretty well  still looks pretty good imo :D

I'm absolutely fine when I play single player, my PC loves it, will do that all day.

It seems to come in spates, I am playing at 1024x768, with everything set to low, except for scale distance which is set to 100% - my thinking being you really need to be able to see stuff. I will get good gaming for a while, but as soons as I try to pilot a tank, or sometimes it just occurs randomly - like I was trying to chase suicidal monkey up a ladder - I was warping all over the place.

I have problems with my connection on our server, it seems to be a problem with the server i belive, for when i connect i usually have 5 to 10 minutes of my pc "jolting" which others experience. But hey it works and it seems a lot more stable with the 2nd patch update.

QuoteIn-Game Lag/Freezes: Most people experience a lot of in-game lags, pauses and several-second freezes. Aside from optimizing your system as per my guides in the Essential Optimization section, check the Clearing Shader Optimizations tip below, and make sure to carefully read the Video option descriptions in the In-Game Settings section further below as well, and of course make absolutely sure you have defragmented your hard drive after installing this demo. However it is quite clear that BF2 requires a lot of memory to operate. Basically many of the pauses/freezes are related to loading information from the hard drive, and for those of you with only 512MB of RAM this will happen very often, particularly at the start of a match and whenever new areas/items are encountered. Even with 1GB, there is a lot of loading, so clearly BF2 would benefit from 2GB of RAM. More importantly, graphics cards with 128MB of Video RAM will also experience more pauses as textures are loading into/out of Video Memory.

Clearing Shader Optimizations: When you change the graphical settings BF2 attempts to optimize the shaders used in the game for the best performance on your particular hardware. These optimized files are stored in your \Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\ directory. If you've changed your settings several times, I recommend you finalize your changes, close BF2, go to the above directory and delete everything under the \cache\ directory. The next time you start the game and play single or multiplayer, your shaders will be optimized again. Close BF2 one more time, defragment your hard drive, and now things should be much smoother and load much faster the next time you go to play BF2.

However I still only get lag/freezes on multiplayer online games.

I find that I get lots of lagginess and freezing in multiplayer sometimes but I have also worked out how to get rid of it...

Try turning off dynamic shadows and turning off lighting. These two settings are where the lagginess on my system originate. Not entirely sure why but I recall dynamic lighting/shadows to be one of those tricky things, and if it's having to rely on your connection to get info prior to rendering and then getting an update before the rendering is complete perhaps something is tripping up? Shadows are nice but if they make me lag I can do without them
