Yay.. gettin there slowly but surely:D

Well, it's the fan suddenly starting up on noise, then blowing loud, seems to go back a little bit and start blowing loud again...

Could be motherboard... known issue at the mo with Dell Optiplex GX520's and a couple of MSI AM2 boards in NEC machines.

Fan runs full whack until POST is complete, backs off and then ramps back up until it sounds like a small jet engine.

mum in law is stable at mo so everything is cool at mo cheers for the thoughts
