3.17 is live and it adds some of the following to the mix

  • Refuelling - Anyone out there with a Starfarer, now's the time to see what they can do
  • Better AI - (They do seem a little more active than before on ship and ground combat), also desync is getting better.
  • Selling - Okay trade has always been a thing but it's mainly spreadsheet stuff, but now you can loot a dead body, guns or boxes and sell the stuff back to the shops.
  • Looting - Lots more boxes to loot with rare items.
  • Mining gadgets - New reusable devices that allow you to crack open rocks easier, there is a 50:50 change the device may be destroyed in the process.
  • New water stuff - Seas have been in for a long time and were pretty deadly, but now with the introduction of a river on MT they have overhauled it.
I've also noticed they have sneaked working airlocks back into the game.

So for those wondering.... this is what is currently in game.

  • Bounties - Ship and ground, ground is usually in an outpost or cave system, ship is in or out of atmosphere.
  • Trading - Buying and moving stuff for shiny profit or not.
  • Deliveries - Pick up box from point A and deliver to point B, get paid.
  • Recovery - Same as above but point A may be in a wreck site and possibly have baddies.
  • Investigation - Client sends you to check something out, maybe search for bodies or black boxes (may include gunfire, but this would be alluded to in the text)
  • Mining - Probably the most complex game loop in at the moment with gems, small/medium/large rocks and asteroids.
  • Mercenary - Lots of shooty stuff, defending a site, destroying a drugs lab, clearing an enemy hideout, blowing up hacking satellites, neutralizing space guns and more.
  • Medical - You can heal and revive people, in your team or sometimes someone (real player) might activate a medical alert beacon for a rescue.
  • Baddy stuff - Criminal activities.
  • Stuff I missed - Because BRAIN.
New ship in 3.17 is the Hull-A, a transforming small freighter. 3.17.1 is in Evo at the moment and will introduce the Scorpius, an X-winged 2 man fighter with co-pilot turret.

And last but not least, it is so damn pretty.

Technology Section / Maybe its time
January 28, 2020, 06:15:37 PM
So, my current system is built on a mobo I bought in Nov 2010, so maybe it's time I looked at an upgrade.

I like my systems to be upgradable, rather than be the best of the best out of the gate, so I'm thinking........

ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PLUS (No WiFi)
Ryzen 3600 (Stock Cooler)
G.Skill Trident Z Neo (2x16 DDR4-PC3600 CAS16)
Sabrent Rocket HTSK 4.0 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME

and maybe a second drive

Sabrent Rocket 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME

There will need to be a case, something not too flashy and I will be transplanting my RX570-8gb initially, I also have a CX750M PSU sat waiting.

Elite: Dangerous / Elite 35th Anniversary
September 21, 2019, 12:11:24 PM
Frontier are giving away the original Elite again for PC and MAC.

Available from the store

They also have a ship bobblehead available in their new ARX in-game store for 1 ARX. It's a hologram of the original retro Thargoid mothership.

Not sure what it takes to earn ARX, but I logged in to find I have an initial balance of 0.

No, not part of the late Firefall franchise :crying:, but a 4 player Co-Op in the L4D style.

Not zombies, ALIENS and apparently has defense building elements akin to Fortnite.

Currently £10.99 on Steam early access, launch date of 13th July at which point the price will double.

Well, Subnautica was released fully at the beginning of December and last night I decided to abandon my Early Access savegame and start again from scratch. Glad I did as I don't think the storyline would kick in otherwise.

I notice a few others seem to have gone back to it recently as well.

They've certainly made some changes. It's a lot harder now to get the blueprints, but the added voice acting and storyline are good. There was no alien tech in it when I stopped playing EA, but I've already come across it when the story sent me to a location and used it's facilities.............

I've got a Seamoth up and running and managed to get a Cyclops built before logging off last night, but still don't have the blueprints for a general purpose dome and so I don't have a base started yet, just hanging out at Lifepod 05. Don't even have anywhere to charge my batteries.

Already knowing the basics and how to survive allowed me to get pretty far in one night and I expect to be self sufficient on the Cyclops pretty quickly.

Still a pretty game and a pity it's single player.

LOW INCOMING VOLUME:-

Problem = For some reason when started Discord has been lowering the volume of the app and Windows sounds in the mixer when started.

Fix = Right click on speaker icon on Windows taskbar, "Open Volume Mixer" and adjust the output levels for Discord.

The Island (Original and now archived) / Picture request
September 08, 2017, 11:17:44 AM
Does anyone have a screenshot of my character from June 2016 which shows my level, prior to the extinction event on the 21st.

Although pre-event pics would be okay as I didn't earn any XP building the survivalist bunker, I used "magic" to spawn in the mats and I know there were a lot of pictures because of the "interesting" attire we all had on, or not.

Since "The9" took over "Red5 Studios", sacking the original designer and CEO of the Firefall (Mark Kern) and eventually killed the spirit of Firefall, there have been rumblings from him about producing a successor to his original game.

The game we used to play on the Firefall servers was a slightly gutted version of what he was producing in beta, it was still fun and I spent many an hour on it. A lot of the original beta players loved the version he was producing and were slightly annoyed at his firing and dumbing down of the released version. They kept Red5 running the project for a long time after, but then really started messing with them. They sacked half the developers at Christmas 2015, redesigned a lot of the game and eventually collapsed Red5 after pushing out a massive game-breaking update that nobody wanted.

Anyway, I've been keeping an eye on the rumours around Mark wanting to recover some of what was taken away.

So from the crash and burn of Firefall there is an ember (or Em-8er) which has taken hold.

They have done a few IndieGoGo campaigns for money to pay for graphic designers and modellers. They now have a final IndieGoGo before they move on to a prototype game which will be used to build a viable KickStarter campaign.

IndieGoGo here Em-8ER - Mech vs Kaiju
Main website here Em-8ER

They asked for $20K to get a working pre-alpha prototype and have already passed $55K (including direct PayPal backers). They have been adding stretch goals and rewards every other day. 3 Days left and it has "never to be offered again" awards to the backers on the already funded campaign. I loved Firefall and I owe it at least a punt for a few quid to get the 1st game tier. A lot of the rewards are based on Firefall tech in homage to it.

He's going for the same premiss, a huge PvE MMO with changing warfronts, reclaimable areas, a mysterious enemy, omni-frames and drilling "Thumpers" which will attract the locals. The "Thumpers" in this one will be large mech drilling robots which you have to defend while they drill and then escort back to safety.

If you need to have a break from the grind, why not go sight seeing.

How about a short trip to Amundsen Terminal, 4.5kly from Zeta.

Elite: Dangerous / Be Prepared (To Run Like Hell)
April 17, 2017, 12:37:05 PM
After an incident last night that a few of us still aren't prepared to be 'Brave Sir Robin'.

So, make sure you have done and know the following.

The Frameshift Drive has 2 modes of operation, Frameshift and Supercruise, each have their own configurable keys which you need to make sure you know.

Frameshift
This is the drive which hops you around the galaxy, by pressing this key and having another solar system selected it will jump to that system if:

1. It is in range
2. It is not obstructed visually from your current location.
3. You have everything stowed and are not mass locked.

If you activate Frameshift without a destination set it it will default to SuperCruise mode, a lot of people may just use it like this and not bind a Supercruise button. Frameshift takes a while longer to charge depending on the size of the jump, Supercruise doesn't,  this could mean valuable seconds when escaping or overheating. Do not use Frameshift to escape combat or from dropping into a suns gravity, it could be the difference between life and death.

Supercruise
This is the interplanetary drive which you zip around the system in, make sure you have a key bound to this. Supercruise doesn't care what you have targeted in navigation and as it has fewer calculations it will boot up a lot faster. This will get you out of a suns gravity quicker and the same for combat, only mass and deployed items on the ship can stop it charging. This is your escape drive.

So when you know the cards are stacked too heavily against you.

1. Drop countermeasures, chaff or heatsink.
2. Retract hard-points. (Ignore the noises and animations, once you press to stow them they are done.)
3. Glance at the bottom right of the HUD to check on Gear and Scoop, if any are lit get them stowed. (Ignore the noises, once you press to stow them they are done.)
4. All pips to engines and hammer that boost button and keep pressing it as it ruins down.
5. If Mass is locked then turn away from any large bodies or a full 90 degrees away from the rocks if you are at a resource extraction site.
6. When hard-points are stowed and all the indicators in the bottom right are empty hit the "Supercruise" button, not "Frameshift".

Lick your wounds at the local station.

Saw this mentioned on a review somewhere for No Mans Sky" as better value for money.

Early access space survival game, currently on 50% off until 22nd and has dedicated server code. Looks to be updated frequently.

Looks like Space Engineers meets ARK.

Those of you that have been to the last few LAN's will probably have seen us playing "Gang Beasts" and laughing our respective gender specific functional bits off. Unfortunately it is a local only game which needs you to have up to 8 XBox controllers installed.

Well I had mine switched to the "Beta" program because there were a few crashes while we were playing.

My install just updated itself, so I fired it up and guess what, there is now an Online option in the game menu and active servers for Beta testing.

Ark: Survival Evolved Admins / Starving Dinos
March 30, 2016, 10:59:20 AM
I'm sure none of us mind popping in and feeding Dinos whilst someone is away on holiday, working all the hours under the sun to keep people alive or real life prevents them from playing games.

That said, I'm annoyed at the latest reason for asking someone to feed their dinos,

Not playing because I'm too busy playing other games, please feed my Dino's for me.

Asking for someone to feed your dinos whilst you are not able to access your computer is the same as asking the neighbour to pop over and feed the fish and water the plants whilst you are away from the house on holiday.

The latter is like asking someone to come around and feed the fish and water the plants whilst you are sat in the same room playing with your new puppy and can't be bothered to spend half an hour away from it.

My feeling is that we have alerted people to the fact their dinos are dying and we just keep posting the names as they starve to death.

The Island (Original and now archived) / Alpha sightings
February 17, 2016, 12:57:07 PM
Thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to mark live sightings of freely wandering alphas that are still active.

Type and level, as well as location and time.

If you come across a reported alpha you can put updates if it's moved or if you have disposed of it.

Lets start it off

----------------------------------------

Alpha Rex - lvl 1 - last spotted around 30.lat x 65.lon - 23:50 last night

had  a pop at it on my bird, but it just wasn't showing damage after a full  stamina bar of pecking, needs a few of us attacking to stop it from healing so  fast.
