Elite: Dangerous / Worth joining?
November 02, 2017, 07:08:56 PM
Hi everybody :byebye:

What comes to Dmw, I've been mostly playing racing games. Just came back here after few years break. Noticed you have Elite section now. I've been playing a lot of Elite while I was away (mostly in solo, but some private group too). Been thinking if I could join you and offer my help in what ever you do. Mainly my activities have been in bounty hunting, exploration, trading and passenger transport, but I guess I have tried everything at least once...except pirating

So the question is what exactly are you doing in Elite? Do you play open or in some private group and form wings...or maybe just do things alone and banter in TS? I noticed you have your own faction

Racing Sims / Back to business
November 01, 2017, 08:40:46 PM
Hi all

Some might remember me. Haven't been around here for some years. Bought a new computer and decided to stick the wheel back in and join some racing.

That was the good news...(or bad depending who you ask)

Installing my G27 wheel in Windows 10 turned out to be bit problematic. Windows and Logitech control center claimed I had some old wheel with only 2 pedals and no H-shifter. Common problem apparently. Managed to get it sorted some way with Youtube videos. Much worse problem is that the steering wheel leather (fake?) coating is rotting/disintegrating in some parts. It is sticky and my hands get black now. Maybe I should have taken care of it somehow (oiled it with some lotion frequently? :g: ). Any ideas and is it totally "foobar"?

NetKar - Assetto corsa / Assetto Corsa settings mystery
January 24, 2015, 01:40:44 PM
The UI in Assetto Corsa is misleading. I had always thought the Toe in value which you set is the angle (in degrees). Surprise surprise it is NOT. First of all it is just some arbitrary number and more importantly it is in the opposite direction to what you are used to (inwards is positive normally, but in AC increasing the value makes the tire turn outwards). For example if you want the front tires in the 1987 Cosworth Sierra to point directly forward you have to set the magic toe in value to c 95. Luckily you can see the true numbers on the pad right of the numbers

After I noticed this I tried RUF. Finally I was able to set this car behaving in sensible way. Too bad the RUF week was two weeks ago :taz:

I feel stupid now. How long have I played this and I notice this only now. This is why my teacher told me to pay attention.

Live for Speed / It stinks...again!
July 22, 2014, 06:03:42 PM
No, not the wheel itself this time but the power unit. All the sudden it said puff and an electric smoke odour filled my nose. My TV and computer screens went black and no sounds coming from my computer. It had caused the safety switch in the house fuse board to drop.

I removed power from the wheel. I don't know if the wheel itself is busted but the power unit smells 'fishy' (i.e. bad). I haven't dared to try it again, but I fear that I have no wheel at the moment :(

Live for Speed / It stinks!
December 27, 2013, 04:23:31 PM
...it really does. Decided to buy a wheel finally. I bought a new shiny G27. After installing it and some testing I noticed how much it stinks. I mean the leather coating on it has a chemical odor which creates slight irritation in my hands too. Luckily it has been getting smaller now. Maybe the wheel is some fake copy :g:

Noticed another thing what stinks. After 2-3 years away from racing my driving stinks too. Especially with wheel. :sideways:

So smelly greetings for everyone :norty:

Anything happened in these years?

Technology Section / SyncMaster 2333HD
March 12, 2009, 11:01:22 PM
I've been thinking to get a monitor with TV capability (note: NOT TV as a monitor). Unforunately those are not so numerous.

Now I came across Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD. Does anybody have any experience of this one? Is it any good or should I stay far from it? :g:

Some specs: 23inch, 1920 x 1080 (full HD), TN panel (yeah, unfortunately), 5ms, 15pin D-sub, DVI-D, 2HDMI, Component, DTV Tuner (DVB-T), Optical Out, Scart, CI Slot. Weights 6.1kg.

Racing Sims / A new race game to try
July 16, 2008, 07:29:53 PM
Not seen me online for few days, 'cause I've been putting up this.

Uses ArmA and Sigma-6 vehicle pack with '60-'70s muscle cars (like Dodge Charger, Plymouth Barracuda, Hemicuda and Road Runner). It's a blast to blast through a town with those. Those cars are hot even just to look at :dribble:

Of course I had to put up a lap/split time system and a list of end results. The current track is kind of a cannon ball rally on public roads around the island. Need to go through few time/split line gates, othewise you can do what ever you like. Winner is the one with the fastest time. (the system is easy to make other tracks, so once it is finished a new track can be made in hours).

In some way it is better than LfS for example. Can select race time 24h freely, so night racing is available and bad weather too. If you drive of a cliff or go head to head with a truck you end up as a burning wreck :)
The physics does not quite match LFS but it is good for a war game.  (just in case if you didn't realise it, I didn't make this 100% seriously)

I've been testing it alone, so need to test it in multiplayer next. Any race nuts here with ArmA? More than Sean

Some piccies here. Sorry but the heavy JPG compression made some of them bit blocky.

Movies, Music & Books / Read at work?
June 21, 2008, 12:24:58 PM
Summer time, have to work even you don't feel like? Don't worry, you can read some classics on your computer screen and pretend to be working. Your boss won't notice anything :D

Note: The original poster won't take any responsibility if you are caught and kicked from the job

Maybe this would be something for you FPS nutheads?

I bet it would cheaper to just ask the missus to hit you with a frying pan...something what she will probably do if you buy that.

Football enthusiastics probably know this. Exactly 50 years ago, February 6th, 1958, was a sad day for football. The airplane carrying Manchester United football team ("Busby babes") failed at takeoff from Munich airfield hitting a building and bursting into flames. Among the dead were 8 players, 3 team officials and 12 other people. This team was considered to be one of the top teams at the time and it had many English national team members.

Players died:
-----------------
Roger Byrne, defender
Geoff Bent, defender
Eddie Colman, defensive midfielder
Mark Jones, defensive midfielder
Duncan Edwards, defensive midfielder
Liam Whelan, midfielder
Tommy Taylor, forward
David Pegg, forward

It has been said many times Duncan Edwards (age 21 at the time) alone would have become the England's best ever player (to this day) and his skills and tactial sense have been praised by many people like Bobby Charlton (who himself survived the same crash).

Seriously though ... / US navy railgun in test
February 02, 2008, 02:17:53 PM
(This is not really a question but other people have posted news in this section too)

As the title says, US navy is testing railguns (no, not railway guns).

http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,160195,00.html

Quite power hungry it is. I bet it is effective, but I fear it doesn't make as cool sound as firing a 16 inch naval gun (which have already been replaced by missiles anyway) :g:

Live for Speed / LFS Remote
January 20, 2008, 03:21:29 PM
Just noticed there is a new feature in LFSWorld - LFS Remote. You can see the race situation on a map in your browser! Server needs to be posted into the insim relay service. Check yourself in LFSWorld.

Copied part of the help here...

LFS REMOTE Help page

LFS Remote allows you to remotely view and to some extend administer Live for Speed hosts. To have your host listed here, you must submit it to the InSim Relay service.

When viewing a host, you can move the map around and zoom in and out with your mouse. You can follow specific racers around the track by clicking on their names in the racer list to the right. Double click to zoom in. Clicking their position button shows a racing line, which might help tracking them.

Laugh? I nearly started. / Upgrading to Wife 1.0
November 02, 2007, 05:14:05 PM
Upgrading to Wife 1.0

Last year a friend of mine upgraded from Girlfriend 4.0 to Wife 1.0 and found that it's a memory hog leaving few system resources for other applications. He is also now noticing the Wife 1.0 is also spawning Child-processes which are further consuming valuable resources. No mention of this particular phenomenon was included in the product documentation, though other users have informed me that this is to be expected due to the nature of the application.

Not only that, Wife 1.0 installs itself so that it is always launched at system initialization where it can monitor all other system activity. Some applications such as PokerNite 10.3 , Bachelor Party 2.5, and Pubnite 7.0 are no longer able to run on the system at all, causing the system to lockup when launched (even though the apps worked fine before).

Wife 1.0 provides no installation options. Thus, the installation of undesired plug-ins such as Mother-in-law 55.8 and the Brother-in-law Beta is unavoidable. Also, system performance seems to diminish with each passing day.

Some features my friend would like to see in the upcoming Wife 2.0:

- A "don't remind me again" button.
- Minimize button.
- Ability to delete the "headache" file
- An install feature that provides an option to uninstall 2.0 version without loss loss of other system resources.
- An option to run the network driver in "promiscuous mode" allowing the the system's Hardware Probe feature to be much more useful/effective.

I myself wish I had decided to avoid all of the headaches associated with Wife 1.0 by sticking with Girlfriend 3.0 Even here, however, I have found many problems. Apparently you cannot install Girlfriend 4.0 on top of girlfriend 3.0. You must uninstall Girlfriend 3.0 first, otherwise the two versions of Girlfriend will have conflicts over shared use of the I/O port. Other users have told me that this is a long-standing problem that I should have been aware of. Guess that explains what happened to versions 1 and 2.

To make matters worse, the uninstall program for Girlfriend 3.0 doesn't work very well, leaving undesirable traces of the application in the system. Another identified problem is that all versions of Girlfriend have annoying little messages about the advantages of upgrading to Wife 1.0!

VIRUS ALERT

All users should be aware that Wife 1.0 has an undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will delete MSMoney files before doing the uninstall itself. Once that happens, Mistress 1.1 won't install and you will get an "insufficient resources" error message. To avoid the aforementioned bug, try installing Mistress 1.1 on a different system and " never" run any file transfer applications(such as Laplink) between the two systems.

FYI: Don't even think about a shared directory!!!!!!!!!
