Technology Section / New PC Time
December 04, 2022, 12:43:47 PM
Looking to build an "entry level" PC for my eldest. He plays stuff like Rocket League, Warzone 2, Ark, F1 2021 etc

I've already got the SSD (and a second 2.5" SSD for more games). I've also got 16G of 2666 ram after updating my own rig so those will be ok initially.

CPU and GPU are up for debate and I'm watching prices like a hawk at the moment.

Banu Merchantman - Building, balancing, and implementing the Merchantman, the Banu-made trading vessel, into the game.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/3/thread/roadmap-roundup-may-5th-2021

The dev tracker only goes as far as December and the Merchantmen's entry looks like they are aiming for a Christmas release.

Don't hold your breath though :)

The Beer Bar / Laser Printer Advice
April 27, 2020, 11:04:32 AM
Looking for advice on a Printer purchase. Budget is about £300 (pre lockdown price) but happy to spend a little more if it means cheaper cartridges.

Currently we have a temperamental Epson Inkjet SX425W, it's usb/wifi, but the wifi causes me no end of grief and constantly drops out (usually with the Macs). Alongside all the pain of dealing with Inkjets, I'm just done with them and want move to a Laser printer.

Usage isn't consistent but I imagine if it was more reliable my wife (who's a teacher) would use it more often.

Key things I'm after
 - Duplex (2-sided printing)
 - wifi/wired connection
 - Colour
 - Reliable after periods of no use
 - Happily works with all flavours of OS (Windows, iOS, Ubuntu but less concerned about)

Things I don't care about
 - PPM
 - Printing Photos
To give an idea of size etc, something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07HZPXD78/ref=emc_b_5_t would be fine, note that pre-lockdown this printer was under £300, it's not £390. :ranting2:

Note: Currently prices have gone a bit mad with the lockdown so I'll likely wait until things go back to normal. But may have to pay the axtra.

Thanks in advanced

Technology Section / New Build or Upgrade?
December 18, 2019, 11:02:07 AM
My rig is about 4 years old now and although it's still running all my games reasonably well I'm getting an itch. It was bought with the intention of upgrading the GFX card when SC was released (:roflmao:) obviously I didn't expect to be waiting over 4 years back in 2015.

Why a I getting an itch? I'm looking to do an MSc in Machine Learning and figured I should consider a GFX that will be decent for Deep Learning.

The Current Spec:
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH X99
Memory: HyperX XMP Predator Series 16GB (4x 4GB) 2666MHz
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO | 860 EVO | Lots of HDDS etc
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card
Case: be quiet! Silent Base 800 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

So do I stick a RTX 2070 in there (recommendation from https://timdettmers.com/2019/04/03/which-gpu-for-deep-learning/) or should I consider a new build. :g:

(Worth knowing that I can easily put any upgrade off for 6-9 months... but that flipping itch :taz:)

Thanks in advance

This game needs a bit more love in the community, I've been having an absolute blast for months, plus the battle royale PvP mode that everyone is going nuts for is totally free (the only thing you can pay for is cosmetics, animations, battle pass etc, nothing that gives an in game advantage).

There is a separate paid PvE mode, but it's the battle royale that has everyone interested in the game, and what this post is about. Although the PvE is said to still be under active development, it is by and large neglected by the games player base. As a result, you may want to stick to the free mode unless you're absolutely sure you specifically want the PvE!

Some of the things I love about fortnite

1. It just works (bleh Pubg)
2. Cross Platform play (great for playing with my lad who's on PS4)
3. Building (whether throwing down a wall for some instant cover, trying to gain the high ground, or just building a mad base)
4. Epic's sense of fun. (From Rocket Riding to Pulse grenade jumping, traps and jump pads, The Meteor, temporary game modes to keep things fresh)
5. Progression that unlocks skins, animations, pickaxes, banners etc (but nothing that impacts gameplay, enhanced by the Battle Pass)
6. Crazy challenges to complete to level up the battle pass (that unlocks a tonne of cool cosmetics)
7. Surviving is a challenge, you need skill in building and good decision making to last.
8. Lastly. It's Free so little risk!

Check into PvE Fortnite to get those free v-bucks that you can use to buy the Battle Pass.

This game has kept popping up on my radar, it looks like it could be a blast. The game is instanced and the base building isn't persistent but that might be a good thing and a nice change for someone like me that likes to build but hasn't the time to invest in games like Ark.

EDIT: Apparently there is an area where you can build a persistent base inside your outpost/storm shield area. Also seems that you can invite others to come help you build your outpost.

Currently you're paying for Early Access, but it's supposedly Free to Play in 2018 (not sure exactly when), although that to me screams pay to win at some point.

Anyone else thinking of picking this up?

I seem to have scarpered with someone else network cable, I unplugged mine from the PC/switch and gathered up a loose black cable. As the one I came away with wasn't connected to anything I'm guessing that someone packed up earlier and left theirs and I picked it up by accident. Not sure if mine got left or someone else picked it up.

It's a nice looking one, 10m black cable with gold/red ends. Mines a 10m Black with black ends, clear connectors.

If it's yours and you want it back PM me know your address and I'll get it in the post. Otherwise I'll hang on to it until the next LAN :)

Technology Section / Which Internet Provider?
September 06, 2016, 11:56:58 AM
My contract with BT is up and I'm ready to switch to fibre. Anyone recommend an ISP?

Alternatively, which comparison sites to people use these days?

I tend to work from home a lot these days so I want something that's reliable but will also let me work when the kids are home stealing my bandwidth :)

Thanks in advance

Game Admins / Do we have any Admin Guidelines?
March 05, 2016, 10:38:05 AM
I've seen it mentioned in a couple of places but I can't find a post on Admin Guidelines. I've looked through the most obvious places I can think of and attempted to use the search.

One place we mention "Admin Standards" is in the Management post in http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?9513-The-Management

 I'll probably kick my self

Ark: Survival Evolved Admins / Giga Tame
March 04, 2016, 12:09:56 PM
I'll be honest, I'm a bit peeved this has happened. Not for myself, I really didn't expect to take part in it. But more because we built up everyone else's expectations and then let it fall flat.

Am I wrong in thinking that the job of game admins is to ensure everyone else has an enjoyable gaming experience?

If we attempt to organise something we really should take a bit more time to ensure it keeps it's momentum. I'm as much to blame.

Perhaps my expectations are too high.

As for the taming exercise I don't see why it still can't happen but someone needs to step up and lead it. Hard to tell what's been happening as the post/spreadsheet hasn't been updated much.

Ark: Survival Evolved Admins / AFK a while.
February 24, 2016, 12:18:48 PM
Just letting you know I won't be around much for a while. Got a lot of stuff to sort for baby number 3 arriving on the 4th June. As well as overtime to pay for an extension or house move.

Currently sorting through the loft, 8 years of the wife's hoarding kids clothes and old toys.

Feel free to replace my admin stuff, I won't be offended. :)

Ark: Survival Evolved Admins / Ark - Unforgiving
February 02, 2016, 03:24:19 PM
Speaking with Sith earlier today and I thought it worth discussing the issue of younger players a bit more.

As easy as it was to damage other players structures in minecraft it was also fairly easy to repair. Ark on the other hand is incredibly unforgiving.

If you agro near everyone's pets they will come to your aid and they could end up dead. The amount of time it can take to track down and tame things makes this really painful

If you accidentally damage a structure (agro to near a base or just demolish the wrong thing) and take out some support  you could bring down big chucks of a building. Destroying containers and possible loosing anything stored within them.

As a player around other peoples stuff I'm always super careful, even then it's not always worked out. But I fear younger players (< 10) will be less thoughtful/careful.

Perhaps anyone who has a minor on the server should also be responsible for any damage done. I'd even suggest that they need to be on at the same time although I don't think that's practical and probably hard to enforce.

I don't have a strong opinion here, I just think it needs some discussion.

Afternoon All

Knowing we have a diverse crowd here there might be some useful advice.

We are looking to build a single story extension on our house to free up the study so it can be used as a bedroom (more on that later).

Our house is an L shape with garage on the side (effectively making a U shape). The idea is to fill in the gap and use the space as a study (really it's a man cave but to convince the wife I'm calling it a study). The area is pretty useless due to it being north facing and gets no sun. We were going to slab over it anyway.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r9EhLltB_5anhh4BxLEUDhtr-stmrg78Mw/view?usp=sharing

I have a basic estimate for £13k excl. VAT.
 • Basic flat roof
 • uPVC door/window
 • electrics (downlights and 2 double sockets)
 • additional extractor fan for small toilet and extending existing fan for Utility room
 • Moving the boiler into the garage.

Additionally another £2k for a lantern light in the roof.

My searches online haven't come up with much when you only need 1 wide/roof doing so I don't have much to go on in regards to cost.

Does that seem a reasonable starting estimate? The builders themselves are known to be more expensive. They are well known, family run, been around for 60 years, good quality and very tidy finishers.

Any advice is welcome but ultimately looking for some reassurance that I'm not getting a ridiculous price.

Thanks in advance.
