dMw LAN XLI / Alternative gaming devices at the LAN
February 25, 2023, 10:52:01 PM
Is anyone planning on turning up at the LAN with a non-PC gaming device?

Examples may be a Steam Deck, XBox, PS4/5, Linux PC, Nintendo Switch.

Purporse of this question is to understand if we cater for devices that support our main games but may not have the tradtional x64 x86 architecture.

Also do these devices work on a LAN.

Movies, Music & Books / archive.org
November 17, 2022, 11:28:05 AM
I expect many of you know this website. archive.org came into being to archive copies of as many websites as possible, allowing internet users to go back in time and see how their favourite websites looked back in the day.

We had a thread a while back looking at the history of our forums and it was possible to 3rd LAN booking thread on archive.org.

Well much more content is becoming open community and I found that many old computer magazines with older editions are appearing.

https://kotaku.com/nintendo-power-archive-org-magazine-issues-online-read-1849785150 - This is a gem for Nintendo enthusiasts.

https://archive.org/details/etree -  the original live music archive where artists give access to bootleged gigs, many amazing quality and I found a lot of my favourite bands on here legally.

https://archive.org/details/books - lots of interesting and freely readable books. Also seach magazines.

https://openlibrary.org/ - a library, borrow, and give back. Cheaper than buying digital, sometimes free, no paper, etc.

Morning campers. This is going for half price on steam right now and is a building and mission driven game with single, co-op and dedicated multiplayer servers.

I like the idea of building boats, helicopters and other stuff to get out there and rescue NPCs and find loot or blueprints.

https://geometa.co.uk/stormworks

https://store.steampowered.com/app/573090/Stormworks_Build_and_Rescue/

https://stormworks.fandom.com/wiki/Wiki/Multiplayer

I’ll give this a go with my bro and a friend and if anyone else is interested tap me up.

For comparison steam says it’s like Ark, Space Engineers or Valheim.

Dunno if yawl tried this back in the day but due to popular demand, 2K have stood up services for co-op for the 4vs1 monster hunter game.

Oh… for free. [emoji41]

Hi All, I'm looking for some detialed advice on the process and choices that have to be made when selecting a new kitchen.

My wife and I are buying a new build and in advance we have chosen a Kitchen company to work with. We've never done this before and I think the guy in the showroom assumes we have some sort of knowledge of the process, he's Dutch as you would expect in the Netherlands and he expects straight direct communication.

We are aware that a new kitchen needs a few fundamental elements to be determined:

1) Layout and size
2) White goods (or black it seems these days): Hob, Cooker, Freezer, Fridge, Dishwasher - bascially anything big enough to need to be integated into the build
3) Flooring
4) Heating (radiators, underfloor etc.)
5) This is the big confusing part: the "Kitchen" components over and above 1-4.

Focusing on 5). At our first meeting, the guy shows us around, of course the showroom examples are nicely designed, have had professional interior decors involved to craft these. If we just said "we want that one" (which is what he probably wants all customers to say but they never do) then it would be simple.

In our 4.62m x 2.850m space we have very few options. We settle on a parallel setup, with all the objects lining the two longer walls. Along the short walls, one is outward looking with 2 near-celing to floor windows (1st Floor so ignore the garden in the pitcure, we cannot walk out these unless we want to get hurt) excluding the possibility of using that wall for worktops. The other wall leads to the lounge and is open plan.

Here you go:

After getting our capacity and position requirements, he sends us off to look at worktops and cupboard doors. He states they have 3 ranges starting at budget, to mid, to high quality. Or VW, Audi and Merc as he describes them.

We pick a few things out, and decide for starters, a door, which ends up being made by Pronorm, a German company with a decent rep. He says they are in the high/ Merc range.

In the heat of the moment, now having had a few days to think. We don't actually know what you get when you buy the line item 5), the kitchen units for this Merc level quality.

So my questions to anyone who has designed their own kitchen with a supplier:

"What are the factors one must consider when deciding upon a Kitchen brand"?
"What are optional things to consider?"
"What am I actually paying all that money for?" (the cupboards, drawers and fittings are 2/3 of the total cost)

I sort of felt like we turned up and the kitchen sales guy/ designer just said look around the zoo and when you're done go have a play around in the ball crawl, like we're kids who wouldn't understand the finer details.

Meanwhile, he went off and drew out the basic stuff, no final colours but the layout as we requested it.

Any advice or feedback welcome.

Lemnis Gate is the revolutionary turn-based combat strategy FPS taking place in a time loop.

2vs2 I am planning on having a go at this with Musicfreak at the weekend.

Due to it being in a bundle this week, it's available in abundance on key recycle sites.

This one is on Humble Choice the month and is billed a harder core (but not really that hard) survival PvE or PvP game.

I has private servers and having completed a decent hcunk of tutorial there has been some effort gone into the lore and helping learn the game.

It is actually â,¬8.49 on steam right now as well.

I will keep playing it and if others decide to give it a go please do poke me and I can join you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhuEbh1eiZA - bit of a starter vidoe to let you get a feel for it.

Note, you have to choose a cradle server to begin with so the necessary missions spawn properly. I made the mistake of choosing a random server and it was desolate.

With the top level â,¬820 and less than even entry level high category cell phones:

Quite amazing plus no games to buy (excluding new or unowned).

Sadly, the original source of many of the best tech meme's, Juan Joya Borja known as El Risitas has passed away.

I expect his legacy will ive on in the TV interview that has become the bane of all big tech incompetence.

I would appreciate any recommendations for a device I use to make a standard USB drive into a network connected device.

I'm looking for simplicity, so Raspberry Pi is not what I want. I have up until now connected my USB backup drive(s) into my (old) router.  They become SMB mappable drives and any PC that needs to schedule backups can send them to the mapping setup on that PC.

Trouble is removing the old router means I no longer have USB ports to do this. I am connecting the old router just as a USB network hub in the meantime but it's 100Mbps and USB 2 plus it is just eating up power.

Hopefully I explained myself well enough, a few examples but not quite right:

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/SEH-myUTN-2500-Device-Server-Gigabit/dp/B01MU7H7OS/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=gigabit+USB+3.0+server&qid=1619433807&s=computers&sr=1-3

This is too expensive. awesome but way too much.

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/TP-Link-TL-WR902AC-Portable-Accesspoint-Repeater/dp/B01MY5JIJ0/ref=psdc_1626220031_t5_B01G9SYGLU

Only USB 2 and 100Mbps. But nice enough and cheap.

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/600-USB-3-0-Device-Server-Secure-network/dp/B01G9SYGLU/ref=pd_bxgy_img_3/261-2217619-1434241?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01G9SYGLU&pd_rd_r=bc4ff33f-5350-473a-90fe-d689ec3fb520&pd_rd_w=LPpYe&pd_rd_wg=Xb9AS&pf_rd_p=a8951a51-6d79-4743-90b9-7063e3f4b854&pf_rd_r=SRNV20B7QVXQZMSS2K5P&psc=1&refRID=SRNV20B7QVXQZMSS2K5P

A bit pricey, FAT support only, no good for larger files.

Not really finding a sweet spot.

Wow, I can't believe it was the 10th March that the last post in this forum section appeared. This game must really be making moves .

Anyway, the latest Alpha release dropped yesterday and it has some interesting features that may re-ignite a little interest:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18021-Alpha-313-underground-infamy?utm_source=Star+Citizen+Supporters&utm_campaign=f623f34a65-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_11_20_09_40_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_607785b0c2-f623f34a65-30354653

Ship naming, Underground vehicle based exploration, Surface to air missiles, Reputation system to deter the nasties. Oh and if you have a Connie, you can actually dock a Merlin on it now.

I'll try a little later to see how it feels.

Well this had me stumped for a few days. Since it is a little complicated and misleading, plus most forums don't really explain it too well. Many people are trying to take advantage of the CPU to GPU transfer optimisations made possible by AMD SAM or nVidia reBAR. And quite frankly the support out there by is OEM's terrible. (MSI have told their forum champions not to help with this, r-soles!!!!) Mainly because there is no single switch to enable this.

I thought I would offer up a a little advice on making Resizable BAR (same for AMD SAM I expect) work for new graphics cards (latest AMD and nVidia ranges).

Chaos level article: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-30-series-resizable-bar-support/
Required if you have Volumes that are still MBR not UEFI: Converting partition table type: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-move-bios-uefi-windows-10

Essentially the memory transfer through your PCIe bus is limited in size to small chunks of data. Like any communications system, you get big chunks and little chunks, the former need to be fragmented to make them fit. This resizable BAR option allows for larger amounts of graphic related information to flow makeing the delivery of a smoother gaming experience. It is applicable for some newer games, not so important for older games. Having access to utilise the entire frame buffer allows multiple transfers to happen to to GPU from the drives on your PC and can speed up and improve gaming performance.

This is what they suggest you do to enable this, I have placed my view on the ease of doing this along side each step:

Installation Steps (check the article for screenshots etc.)

To successfully activate Resizable BAR on a desktop PC, please follow these steps in order, referring to the expanded installation instructions below:
1) Confirm you have a compatible CPU & CPU chipset (see list below) - Albert says this is innacurate, as 9th gen Intel and possibly older AMD also can handle this. I proved is because my 9700K is working fine with reBAR enabled.
2) Confirm you have a compatible motherboard (see list below) - Albert says Important to check as it's a show stopper, also BIOS support for 4GB or reBAR (4GB is something to do with mining that I haven't read up on yet).
3) Update your motherboard SBIOS, if required, by installing an update from the manufacturer. Then enable Resizable BAR support in your motherboard’s BIOS interface - See previous line.
4) Update to the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver (version 465.89 WHQL at the time of writing, released March 30th, 2021), or a later version - Obviously.
5) If you have a GeForce RTX 3060, you’re good to go. If you have a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080, or 3090, then you may require an updated VBIOS - The OEM of your graphics card will have a new vBIOS which should be installed using their standard method for such things. MSI was finiky, but worked.
6) If you have a Founders Edition graphics card from NVIDIA, get your VBIOS update tool directly from our website. If you have a custom partner card, get the update tool from their site (see list below) - If you went native nVidia, they suppoy a tool just for you (Whitey)
7) Verify Resizable BAR is enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel (see instructions below) - Well this is also obvious, but there are about 6 things missing between the above line and actually getting here.

Steps They missed:

1) What they forget to mention is that this cannot work on MBR volumes. So you have to convert your boot drive to UEFI, and that can be done safely but is a little scary. Actually why any of us are using MBR in this day and age is another question, for me is't because I never knew any better. I imagine the server and PC guys and gals on the forums will know the answer.
2) Your BIOS will be set to legacy mode by default and after converting the boot drive you need to change this to UEFI. Important: for AMI BIOS this means also changing the Windows 10 WQHL setting. Most BIOSes support dual Legacy and UEFI.
3) Enabling 4GB and reBAR in the BIOS will change a few other things, like memory allocated to your on board graphics card, plus in 2) above, the BIOS should know there are a few things other than reBAR needed to make it work and change them. So it will look like more parts of your BIOS change settings than you really adjusted. I eventually trusted the BIOS. IF you try to guess this part you may have to reset your CMOS, as likely the grphics settings in the BIOS will be messed up. I had to reset twice. Nothing terrible just inconvenient.

I'll stop now since I am tired from typing, but if anyone is trying this and struggling I will happily help.

The Shipyard / Ship Naming has started!!
March 10, 2021, 10:20:42 AM
So there are a few ships now that can be named, via The Hangar on the RSI website.

Here is the background:

https://support.robertsspaceindustries.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019839074?utm_source=Star+Citizen+Supporters&utm_campaign=9b977b74a0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_11_20_09_40_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_607785b0c2-9b977b74a0-30354653

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/spectrum/community/SC/forum/1/thread/ship-naming-incoming?utm_source=Star+Citizen+Supporters&utm_campaign=9b977b74a0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_11_20_09_40_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_607785b0c2-9b977b74a0-30354653

This is the first iteration of the feature and starts with the following ships:

Aegis Hammerhead
Aegis Reclaimer
Anvil Carrack
Crusader Industries Mercury Star Runner
Origin 600i
Origin 890 Jump

The names will be unique per hull. For example, there can be several ships named “Shooting Star” but only one 600i, Reclaimer, or 890 Jump with the name.

I named my Reclaimer and Carrack. I'd assume that popular space francise type names, Discovery, Enterprise, Rocinante will go like hotcakes. I've not added dMw to the name as I would think that there will be some Org related pre-pending happening like may happen with the pilot name in future. So in order to secure the bare names, with the option of adding dMw after, since I doubt the dMw tag plus name will be taken.

This is getting pretty nice reviews, cheap and apparently quite an interesting take on sword fighting.
