dMw LAN XXXIV / Lan XXXIV - Real Ale #4
September 25, 2018, 10:51:36 AM
It is that wonderful time of the year again when we have some very kind people and businesses willing to sponsor some real ales or real ciders that will appear at the LAN for your enjoyment at a bargain £1.50 per pint. All of the brews have been sampled by the now legendary beer festival team or pacifically asked for by the sponsor and we are fortunate enough for the hotel being able to supply it to us.

REAL ALE #4

Ape Ale by Blue Monkey Brewery

Sponsored by: Penfold, Brother Tobious, Lionheart and SoonJung

A requested beer this one, but also one of the beers tried and thoroughly enjoyed at the GBBF this year, and all giving high ratings. We all enjoyed the Blue Monkey “Infinity” beer from previous Lan’s and so have opted to try a barrel of one of their other apes. A strong, hoppy and interesting beer that will provide all the Monkey you can handle.

Ape Ale is a strong pale ale. A complex and sophisticated IPA, using assertive American hops and a crisp clear finish using the hard water style from Nottinghamshire. At 5.4% this is not for the faint hearted but full of hoppy impact that will have the taste buds tingling.

REAL ALE #3

Gold
by Exmoor Brewery

Sponsored by: Myopic Sniper, Turd, Spazmo and Simagule

We could not get hold of the personal request from the Mashed guys, but this hopefully is going to be a great replacement. Exmoor Ale, their flag ship beer, and makes its way from the south west of good old England. Also noted by Camra in 2015 as the best Golden Ale in the South West. According to untapped this is a beer no one in the community has tried and expectations is a gooden.

Exmoor Gold is the original “single malt” traditional ale â€" Pale gold in colour with a malty aroma and flavour. A light sweetness is complemented by its long hoppiness resulting in a remarkable well-rounded beer. First brewed in 1986 and at 4.5% this is a good session no nonsense beer.

REAL ALE #2

Stay Puft by Tiny Rebel

Sponsored by: Gorliath

A personal request this beer and one I think very few have tried, but it does come from a tried, tested and appreciated brewery. Apparently the first brew of this ale completely sold out from the brewery in 36 hours, so we are expecting some interesting things. Yes, it is a barrel of the black stuff, but this sweeter version should appeal I think. "Who You Gonna Call" (could not help it)

Stay Puft is a Speciality Porter coming in at a good 5.2%. This marshmallow porter has the classic roasty qualities of a proper dark ale, whilst the marshmallow gives it a smooth sweetness, both combing for a delightful, S’mores-like ale. A sweet treat for the cold winter nights.

REAL ALE #1

Lemon Dream by Salopian Brewery

Sponsored by: Faust82, Lord_Woha, Gunda and Pesteh

Back with very popular demand is this little beauty, and the only beer for this year from our selection that is making a return appearance. There were several requests from people for this to be back on and a little magic we have a whole barrel.

Lemon Dream is a Speciality Golden Ale with a delicate citrus flavour, brewed using Maris otter and wheat malt, along with fresh lemons are used in the copper to add a sweeter citrus note.
A real delight in drinking, at a good 4.5% this beer was rated highest by all attendees at the 2017 Great British Beer Festival. Even though it did not win an award that or indeed this year at the festival, we think you will be very delighted to gulp a few down.

dMw LAN XXXIV / DMW Lan XXXIV Deadathalon
September 04, 2018, 02:59:18 PM
As some of you wise and observant individuals might have already noticed, when you were signing up for this year’s fast approaching DMW Autumn Lan that there was a mention about a Deadathalon competition. Well the stories were true and this year we will be visiting again the fun filled, full on and varied competition and we strongly encourage anyone who has not experienced this event to change there “Not sure” entry on the forum to a “yes count me in”. :boxing:

For those who are not sure what the event is about, here is a quick summary. The competition will be carried out over several different rounds and cover several different games, platforms and style of play , but will also not always require you to look at a screen or touch a keyboard :yahoo:. We start off with everyone who signed up for the competition participating and quickly eliminate players until there is only 1 player left standing and who will be crowned this years Winner and Champion.

Yes there will be a prize for the winner and runner up along with raising the coveted Retro Trophy for this year’s Champion.

Except for the first round of the competition. The games, systems and set up will be provided for and you are not required you to bring anything other than your wit and skills. In addition, all rounds of the competition except the first round will be kept a secret until the end of the previous round. This way no one will be able to get sneaky practice in and get the edge over the competition.

As mentioned the first round I will announce to you and it will be a Team Death Match round (hopefully everyone playing at once on 64 man server) on the brutal first-person game Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. The game has recently had an update released which included a dedicated server option which our very own No Peanuts is looking into. This is the only game you will need a steam copy of to play at the Deadatherlon and which I encourage people to invest in as it is a proper laugh, and a game that is very likely to become a regular at the Lan’s like TF2.

You can currently pick up a copy of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare in the sale at humble bundle for £2.50 so less than a pint of beer and in a little way an investment towards charity.

That time again for those few dMw members brave enough to put body and sole on the line in aid of great beer and cider.

As usual we will be aiming for the Friday (10th August) of the 5 day festival as this reduces the number of days needed to be taken off work and allows for the healing of sore heads and possibly bodies over the weekend :taz:

For those also attending the October 2018 Lan we are also looking for some new taster beers and ciders to be sponsored at this event, so your presence and input would be valuable providing you remember what you drank..

Tickets are on sale now. Tickets - £11 pre-booked or £14 on the door if any left, also if your a CAMRA member then there is additional discount. Includes a free program. Follow link below to ticket site and further information.

dMw LAN XXXIII / Lan XXXIII - Beers
April 23, 2018, 11:34:08 AM
Some great news for the beer lovers attending.

I have been able to source 2 beers with the hotel for our consumption over the weekend which are outside their usual brewery orders. Although these are not subsidized this time (this is for the Autumn lan) the hotel will be selling them to us for the reduced price of £3 a pint.

As such a big thank you to the Oliver Cromwell team and please make sure you help out by drinking them.....

The beers are:

Lemon Dream by Salopian Brewery - 4.5% Golden Ale

Infinity by Blue Monkey Brewery - 4.6% IPA style Golden Ale

dMw LAN XXXIII / DMW against the world COD4 style.
April 19, 2018, 08:34:16 PM
As alot if not all you wonderful people may know, Friday nights used to be:

Staying up late on a Friday night drinking beer, wine or what ever the poison might be, into the late evening trying are best (but often beer took place of what talent we had) on the DMW own BF2BC and later BF3 servers with us teaming up against random people in the wide world who needed their Butt kicked Duvel style (Grolsch included). :boxing::boxing::boxing:

Well as we are running some old school Style COD4 servers over the Lan weekend, and we know a good few attendees have lost their levels or characters and with it unlocking their lovely mods, like the pretty much one shot Barrett .50cal or MP5 fully scoped and UV jammed.

As such we will be running for the next 2 Fridays from 8pm before the Lan weekend, a group get together to go take over one of the public 4x exp servers and help beat the world but also max levels quickly and unlock the goodies. I soloed to level 50 in just over 2 hours game play and I cant hit a broken down bus...

So come join us on discord and lets have some old school fun + possibly some drunken 1am talk about how rubbish Twobad really is at BF2BC when he is not hugging some C4.

This is not just lan attendees but anyone for anyone who wants to shoot something.

dMw LAN XXXIII / LAN XXXIII - Itinerary
March 18, 2018, 03:03:11 PM
LAN XXXIII
May 3rd - 6th

We have prepared a rough itinerary for the upcoming LAN for your perusal. A few things might be subject to change and will let you all know as soon as possible.
We will continue to collect your feedback, and welcome your input and ideas. We try to make decisions based upon the majority, but if you don't see your feedback implemented just yet don't fret, it may be something we have planned for a future event!

We hope this itinerary gets your juices flowing, and if you don’t yet have a copy of the planned games then you have time enough to look for a good deal and purchase.

THURSDAY NIGHT CLUB

For those of you able to arrive early (Remember it is not a race so drive carefully).
I will be at the LAN from around midday. The LAN room may well not be open until later, but there will undoubtedly be coffee, beer, and maybe some fish & chips runs for lunch. The festivities don’t get going until the evening though, so don’t fret if you can’t make it for High Noon.

  • 12:00+ - Arrive at the Cromwell.
  • 18:00 - Community Meal Out. We will be heading out as a large group this LAN for a meal out! Check the link for Thursday meal for more details.
  • 20:00-23:00 â€" Poker Texas Holdem Torment. Back with popular demand the usual card playing fun - £5 entry.
  • 21:00 â€" Call of Duty 4 - We will be running a server for this older FPS game close to our hearts. Grab a copy before the LAN if you don't already have one! And feel free to start levelling your toon to get the best guns etc.

FRIDAY

  • 10:00 - 13:00 - Ad hoc gaming. We will be running a Team Fortress 2 Server at some point this morning, so get your copy installed and jump on for some manic team-based shenanigans.
  • 14:00-16:00 - Mystery Event - Something a bit different this afternoon. It doesn't involve leaving the Cromwell, and you don't need a PC for it but there will be a small charge. More details to follow.
  • 14:00-18:00 - Ad hoc gaming. We will be running some Retro gaming this afternoon, alongside the mystery event. You do NOT need to bring anything to participate, we have you covered. Just remember to shout at your useless team mate chopping the wrong veg for the soup.
  • 18:00 - Steak Night. We will be collecting orders in advance. Details to follow.
  • 20:30 â€" Lan Virgin and Competition team pulls â€" Mandatory to all with beers.
  • 21:00 - Unreal Tournament Comp- CLICK HERE!  Yes there is a prize for the best team and player.

SATURDAY

  • 10:00-12:00 - Mystery Retro Tournament. To keep the day varied, this one won't involve iron sights or headshots. You don't need to bring anything with you to participate, we have it covered.
  • 1300-1500 - CS: Deagle. New maps, seeded duos.
  • 16:00-18:00 - Overwatch. 6v6 or 3v3 depending on numbers. Teams will be seeded to keep things balanced.
  • 18:00 â€" CS: Deagle Final â€" To be watched on the big screen
  • 19:00 - Pizza Night - We will be ordering from Dominos as a group, aiming for any pizza (large) for £10. A booking thread will open for this later. If you don't fancy pizza, the Hotel Restaurant will be open, as well as several takeaways from the March Highstreet.
  • 20:00 - CS:GO Tournament. New maps, new modes, seeded teams.
  • 22:00â€"22:30 â€" Competition Prize Presentations and pictures. Mandatory to all with beer.
  • 23:00 - Mandatory Kebab. Ok, not mandatory, but highly recommended.

These times are only a rough guide, as things may overrun on the day! We will keep you updated throughout.

SUNDAY

10:00+ - Breakfast and Final Announcements / Closing Ceremony. There will be a bit of light ad hoc gaming for those of you wanting to scratch that itch a little more before heading home.
After that it’s time to pack up, travel safe, and start the countdown till the next LAN.

There are a few little things to note.
First, there will be prizes for the tournaments, including the Friday Night Mystery Tournament.

Secondly, there will be a ‘Casual Corner’. Casual / social gaming was one of the main things you guys wanted to see more of at the LANs. We have built upon this following LAN’s and think you will like the changes and game variety.

Finally, we will be spectating some of the tournament games using the social corner, so if you're not playing you can still get involved.

Non-Supporting Member:- £12 (this includes an automatic upgrade to Supporting Member status for one year)

Hotel Costs:
Bed & Breakfast:

This year there is only 1 twin room available to us due to another booking made before we set the dates 18 months ago, and sadly it is unavoidable for this LAN. As such we will be running a first come first serve policy so if you want the twin book fast.

There are now no twin rooms available.

However the goods news is because of this we have been give a discount for the double rooms for this Lan only.
[/I]
  • Double occupancy £33 per person per night - that means sharing a double room with your mate or 'special friend' in the same bed unless you're lucky enough to book the only twin available
  • Single occupancy £40 per room per night - double room only.

If you book a Twin Room or Double and want to share the costs of the room but DON'T already have a roomie, then when you post in this thread to confirm your attendance then also make a note of the fact you have a twin room booked and are looking for someone to share with.

As before, the reduced accommodation and function room rates have been negotiated on the basis that the majority of the attendees will partake of the excellent cuisine offered by either the hotel restaurant's Fixed price, A La Carte or Bar menus.

You are free to book your rooms now directly with the hotel on 01354 602890.

Put your name down when you have confirmed you have booked including when you are arriving

Remember to say it's for the dMw LAN (to get the subsidised rate) and also give your real name and gaming name.
(If you want to arrive early and stay on the Thursday night you will receive the same subsidised rate).

Travel:- we will do our best to arrange pick up and drop off from the major London airports. If you find yourself stuck or simply want to share a lift, post in the travel plans thread.

Gear:- there will be a packing thread posted soon. The basics are some sort of PC and monitor, with peripherals including headphones - speakers are a no no. If you're desperate to game but can't get a PC to the LAN, ask around, we have in the past been able to source PCs from generous members of the community willing to lend - in exchange for a beer or 3 of course :norty:

Seating:- seating details will be released closer to the event.

Please note that, as previously, by signing below you agree to sign a liability disclaimer waiver form (if not already signed). This is a condition of your attendance at the LAN. Please pm Penfold if you wish to see a copy of it.

dMw LAN XXXII / Real Cider #8
October 05, 2017, 01:34:13 PM
Just like last year we have some very kind people and businesses willing to sponsor some real ales or real ciders that will appear at the LAN for your enjoyment at a bargain £1.50 per pint. Some of these brews have been sampled by the now expert dMw GBBF drinking team, or have been sampled before and must make a come back.

REAL Cider #8

Awfully Offley
by Hardings

Sponsored by: Faust

Our final sponsor for this years Lan beer / cider, and it is provided for us by our one and only Faust who also will be making the long trip to see us all and taste what he has sponsored. Lets hope this Dry cider is better than his Dry humour or at least he does not start the jokes before several pints of beer have been devoured. Big thanks matey from all of us..

Harding’s Awfully Offley is Back by special request! Due to the great 2013 Apple harvest we were able to recreate the great Dry crisp flavours of 2011 for the St Ives and Abbotsley beer festivals in October 2014 which went down a storm with Huntingdonshire's cider connoisseurs. Coming in at 7.5% this Dry cider should be interesting.

I don't think anyone has tried this one but as we are having the very popular sweet cider from Hardings I thought a good idea to try their "special brew Dry" for the last sponsored barrel. According to the brew manager who I spoke with you can mix the 2 different types of cider to make a medium dry which apparently has an excellent taste. So in theory we have 3 ciders for this Lan although not sure how brave you would have to be to mix 1/2 pint of each together at 7.5% ABV.

REAL Cider #7

3 Peace Sweet by Hardings

Sponsored by: DMW Community

First of the Ciders for this years Lan and sponsored by our lovely community who again seem to think we need to drink more, which I hole heatedly agree with. Bring on the apple and fruity goodness so we can all share in the alcoholic haze. Cheers guys....

Harding is a Cambridgeshire cider maker and so is a relatively local drink for the Oliver Cromwell hotel. 3 Peace Sweet was created as a WW1 Centenary Edition and is 7.5% ABV. It was styled for those who prefer a sweeter cider following an exclusive tasting session at the Hog and Partridge in St Neots. This refreshing brew will appeal to those cider drinkers more accustomed to commercial cider (we know who you are, Magners lovers!). Described by the CAMRA judges as ‘Possessing and aroma of ripe dessert apples’ they commented that ‘it is a truly appley cider and has a flavour thats fresh and summery, with plenty of crisp bite.’ 3 Peace Sweet is Harding's biggest success to date and it surprised by taking the CAMRA National Champion Cider Gold award for 2016!

We had this sweet cider at the last autumn Lan XXX which also got lots of tasting from dMw's very own Ale Research Swilling Executive (ARSE) at the 2016 Great British Beer Festival and got a big thumbs up from us all. It also went down so well at the Lan XXX that it did not even survive a single evenings drinking so we thought it was best to get another barrel of it and enjoy again.... Don't hang around as this brew will run out fast.

REAL ALE #6

King Cotton by Manchester Brewing Co

Sponsored by: Oliver Cromwell

Not only do they provide us with some where to sleep, game and swim etc but they have gone even further and sponsored a barrel of beer for us all to try. Big thank you has to be made to OC for putting up with us over the long weekend and letting us drink more than is possibly good for ourselves.

Manchester has been called a few things over the years . . . during the boom years when it was the centre of the textile industry, it was colloquially referred to as King Cotton. Our King is a chestnut brown, malt-driven Best, lightened with Waimea and Cascade hops for some citrussy freshness and coming in at 4.2% ABV.

Again this beer has yet to win any awards at the Great British Beer Festival but from what reviews I have read this is a good, easy drinking, amber colour bitter which may well come as a good thing after the potent Pale and Golden ales we have been trying. In addition to the Porter picked for the Lan, this ale has yet to be tried by anyone in the community so should be a good experiment and one to be reviewed on Untapped ap.

dMw LAN XXXII / Real Ale #5

Just like last year we have some very kind people and businesses willing to sponsor some real ales or real ciders that will appear at the LAN for your enjoyment at a bargain £1.50 per pint. Some of these brews have been sampled by the now expert dMw GBBF drinking team, or have been sampled before and must make a come back.

REAL ALE #5

Black Hole Porter
by Oakham

Sponsored by: Lan / Lan server Admins = Chaosphere, Gortex, GhostMjr and No peanuts

I never knew we admins liked everyone that much to buy them even more beer. But then again we are lovely people and this time we are providing pints of the lovely black stuff that even TL might have a taste. Big thanks to my fellow admins as I am really looking forward to giving this one a try.

Big darkmalt flavours combine with a sweet and fruity hop taste to make this strong porter exceedingly drinkable and coming in at 5.5 ABV, so this is the strongest Ale for this Lan. It has not won an award at the Great British Beer Festival yet but it has won several regional Gold level awards in the SIBA.

Our original choice of porter from the festival could not be sourced nor the back up, so with the help of Oliver Cromwell we have chosen this ale. We know from experience and previous lans that Oakham do great beer like Citra and Scarlet Macaw, so a good chance this will be a cracker as well. Also I believe no one from the community has tried this one yet so a first taste for all.
