Dr Sadako

I have just spent the entire evening reinstalling my OS and updating everything.  :x  I just felt like going fubar and I lost tons of settings.

My microphone in CS is FUBAR and if you have any great commands or settings I would be very greatful.

Now I will go to bed and hope for a better tomorrow ...

what sound card are you using?

Just checking - you did run voice_tweak.exe in your halflife folder after the new install didnt you? You should hear what your mic sounds like through there. I know whenever I update halflife or reinstall stuff I have to do that or my mic is wonky.

Hmmm, I don't know what to say.  It's *very* strange the way mics sometimes do and don't work between systems and stuff.

My mic has *always* worked fine, then tonight everyone tells me I sould like crud!

I get out into windows aftewards, and sure enough it sounds just horrific.  I go check things, and nothing is diferent.  But it did sound and look like my voice was "too loud" and was causing horrible clipping and stuff - so I turned off the "Advanced" setting for 20 dB gain.  Voila.  My voice isn't quite as loud as I used to remember, but the quality is just like old times.

Why in heck did that change all of a sudden!?!??  I've always had the 20 dB gain set.  The only things I've changed recently were to update the Nvidia video drivers, and to put in a couple new PCI cards - one USB2 one right beside the sound card, another TV Capture card elsewhere.

I have a Hercules GameTheaterXP sound card. The thing is that I reinstalled all my stuff the same way as I had it before i.e. same OS etc.

Well, I have to play around with the settings then ...

Dr Sadako

I installed another set of soundcard drivers and I will check if that works better.

The only good thing with all this reinstalling is that I can see sprays again in CS!     :D

Oi!  I saw that sig CK  :P

Re the mic problems, I find that mics are generally wierd and unpredictable, period.  Up above CK mentioned that he needed to take +20db OFF, whereas every time mine is OFF I get told the voicecom is too quiet, so my default is to play with the +20db ON.  I also have some voice dictation software that I use during the day and for some reason (and without asking me) it always takes the +20db setting OFF, so I have to reset it before going to play CS again  :(

Just keep playing with it Sadako.......as they say  8O

Remember you can always go onto CS, create a LAN game on your client PC and then join that game. You can then enter "voice_loopback 1" (without the quotes) in the console to allow you to hear what you sound like. This helped me to realise that my sound was chopping on and off. Strangely, installing an older set of drivers cured my problem. Don't forget to enter voice_loopback 0 to turn off the echo of your own voice.

my mic is muted in windows. Thats so I dont hear what I say into my mic through my speakers. Thats the way to avoid feedback afaik.
