When my brought the Miami Vice DVD, I thought to myself that here goes to waste a couple of hours, and with unapreciated colin Farrel no less.
But now I can say it's a real good film. Miami is shown like you have never seen it (i.e. no glory), and besides the detectives' names there is no substantial connection to the TV series, which is a good thing. Furthermore, I found out that is was directed by Michael Mann, the same guy who directed Heat and Collateral - so here is the reason why it's actualy a good movie.

In it's spirit, it resembles, in a way, the new Casino Royal. You could say that the fact these movies deviate from the original diminishes from their glory, but I think it's actually good. These two films are actually good films, regardless of their origin.
"Even in a justified war, only one place there is for the dead; if someone loses - it\'s only you. Prime Ministers leave without a scratch - when everything ends they mourn the people; but I want to live on and mourn them"
(free translation from a song by Hanoch Levin, 1968 )

Indeed it is better than you expect - Michael Mann doesnt make a bad film these days.

If you can get a hold of the directors cut on dvd - just a smidge better than the theatrical cut.
If I wanted you to understand I would have explained it better
