how do you do that with vista extreme ed?

2 identical drives.

do you need any controller cards/software?

I'd say striping via the OS is a bit of a waste of time. Much better to do it at a hardware level. Most modern motherboards support RAID 0/1, some even RAID 5. Add-in controller cards can be had quite cheaply too.

Although i'm not convinced that onboard RAID is as low-level as it should be. I *think* Windows looks at a higher level of the BIOS than other OSes, which ignore it because it's often wrong (or used to be at least). I'm basing this on the fact that i've heard other people say it before, and my motherboard supposedly has 'hardware RAID', which i've got in RAID 0, and which only shows up in Windows as 1 drive, but in Linux it sees the 2 separate drives and no RAIDed one. With proper hardware RAID it should see the RAID drive or nothing.

FreeBSD, interestingly, sees all 3 - 2 drives plus the RAID version. I'm not mounting it read-write in anything other than Windows though, because I don't want to stuff up all my data.

The raid problems were almost exclusively with the reference design 680i mobos (like eVGA) and not with the non-reference design mobos like the ASUS.  They are also mostly resolved now with the later BIOS releases.  Having said that I had a set up problem with the raid on my new PC (ASUS 680i chipset) which required some work to get resolved.  I specifically avoided the reference design boards to avoid the raid problems.
