I get a car allowance at work, so a base salary plus a car allowance. I drive to the station each day, a whole 2 miles each way, then get the train in. The car is my own car and I can't be bothered to get another, as all my loans are paid off and I want the money.

So, do I need to be aware of anything, I'm assuming it will be PAYE'd and NI'd so I need not worry, should I claim mileage for the station run on my yearly return (which I currently don't do and am happy not to) - at 40p p/m that would be a saving on tax against £140.

Help me my esteemed friends.

You can not claim for travel to and from the office and you will need to pay tax on the car allowance, unless you do a set business millage. 10k I think.

I am not a tax expert, but was on the scheme a few jobs back.

As you don'tt have a company car, you have a car allowance, you should be fully taxed by your employer - I am (was) in the same position.

I never bothered claiming for the short (3 mile) journey to the office but could claim mileage for miles travelled during the day for work purposes and could claim tax allowance on the difference between what the company paid me (14p/mile) and what I could get (40p/mile).

As long as you are being taxed and NId on your car allowance you should be completely covered.

i believe that is it along the lines of you cannot claim for milage under your normal milage to the office

Correct.. don'y worry benny.. It's all taxed and you have no claim. Unless you do site visits and don't get mileage from your employer you've got nothing to worry about.

Cheers bud, no doubt the missus will dispose of the extra anyway.

I'm going to give the taxman your name and address and ask them to make sure that you're not diddling the system.

At least then you'll  know if you're legal or not
