Do I need an upgrade

Do I? Taking into account I can't be bothered to rebuild but don't mind swapping a card or two. Don't really want to mess about with all the data if I don't have to, but will if really needed. Thoughts? (I'm thinking Arma3 at full tilt - which I pretty much can, but this rig has been running 24/7 for nearly 2 years now...)

I'd change the graphics card for something a bit more up to date and carry on from there. The rest of the system doesn't look too bad to me.

sulky_uk

i would be tempted to go  for a 660 gfx card, and some memory and see what happens.

I came into this world with nothing,
through careful management I\'ve got most of it left.

Snokio

upgrade the RAM, 8 minimum, and get and SSD (Samsung or crucial), put your OS on and Arma 3, should load quicker ;)

out of touch with the graphics cards I'm afraid so can't help you there

kregoron

increasing the memory to 8 gig minimum and upgrading the graphics to a more powerfull series would be optimal, adding a SSD to spice things up would make it perfect.

Tutonic

It depends what you're doing obviously, but I dropped 12gb RAM in my machine and it barely uses more than 4 in total. Based on that, I'd say 8 is probably the maximum worth buying right now - it's easily upgraded at a later date should you really need it.

Money isn't really an issue. Bang for buck is. What's the current flavour of the month graphics card wise? Something like the below?

or according to this, the 7850 for bugger all cash.

Depends on what you use your rig for, 8 might be a lot, or to little, i use about 8-10 Gig when using my PC, but then again, i dropped using a pagefile and so on.

the stuff you chose looks fine :)

I've got the 7850 2GB core edition.
Very pleased with it.

I have a similar base rig (i7 950), except mine has 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD boot partition. I currently have an ATI HD 5870 GFX card and I'm not having any issues with it (ARMA 3 runs sweetly) however, I had a look at what I could get (sub £200) that was better than what I already had and the nVidia GTX 660 did the biz for £165 (not unreasonable).

This card would be 2-3 times faster than your current GFX card (see here).

As others have said RAM will prevent slow downs (you don't go faster, you just slow down less). 6GB seems to be the minimum for Win7/8 x64 heavy users. 8GB is just hedging your bets really.

SSD is pure gold. You'll never go back. A 256GB disc will set you back £130 or less. As long as you've got a secondary drive of reasonable size (750GB+) you won't need more.

EDIT: I have a OCZ 6GB 3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHz Platinum Tri Channel Memory Kit 1.65V CL6 going spare if you're interested. It cost £100 originally, but they go for around £60 now. Make me an offer.
