Users of Windows 2000/XP  M U S T  shut down and disable the DNS Client Service prior to installation to prevent enormous slow downs as this service will attempt to cache the hosts file. This is not an option.

To do this, click "Run" in the Start Menu, type "Services.msc" and press Enter. Scroll down the resulting list of services till you find the DNS Client and doubleclick it. On the General tab, set this services Startup type to either "Manual" or "Disabled". Then click the "Stop" button to shut down the DNS Client and click OK to accept the changes and exit the DNS Client properties.

If you have already installed the hosts file and your PC is working very slowly then omit the step to shut down the DNS Client by clicking the "Stop" button. Click OK to exit the DNS Client Properties and reboot your system. When it starts up again the DNS Client will not load.

This service does not need to be running for standard dns lookups to work.
