Port changing

Well first, the background. I stay at school (boarding) during the week and will soon have internet connections in the dorms. My friends and I tried playing games over the internet through these connections but didn't expect much. Obviously we didn't get much... We only managed to use the network to play games over LAN to other places around the school. A small victory atleast!

As far as i can tell, they are blocking everything by stopping all the ports apart from those used by internet explorer. (I know very little about this, so correct me if i'm wrong).

So i had an idea the other day, is there a way of redirecting a games port through internet explorer ports and having it connect to an external server (outside of school) that changes the port back to the correct one? ie. Say i wanted to connect to Steam.

Computer at school - Converts Steam port to IE port.
Passes through school system to my server.
My server converts IE port back to Steam port.

I'm not sure whether you catch my drift or not. I don't know much of the port side of things or how it works so i can try and explain it differently if needed.

Obviously it's a slight twisting of the rules so i can understand if you aren't keen on helping me :)
Thanks :D

This is possible but I'm not an ubergeek who knows how to do it.

It's the same as most workplaces have their MSNport disabled but because of a new version of MSN which uses explorer it's possible to use MSN (other version but still works great, MSNworld or something).

Sorry Phog, a vague answer but I think it's possible.  :(

The problem here is that if you change your ports then the game server at the other end also needs to be changed to expect incoming traffic on those ports. I think the difficult bit will be getting Steam to change the ports they use  ;)
I do exactly what the little voices tell me to.

PC Specs:- Black box with some fans that go whirrr, a few lights, things inside that get warm, headphones, keyboard (a clicky one), mouse (with buttons and no squeak), disks (2-off SSD and HDD) and a monitor of sufficient proportions.

Why not? :narnar:

I'll have a look around for a program that redirects ports. There has to be something out there!

ok, you'd need to set up some kind of proxy server outside your school firewall.

Your PC sends out requests on 80 (http) to the proxy, the proxy redirects it to 270xx (CS), BUT......

CS runs on multiple ports so you'll run into trouble with a proxy knowing which should go to which.

Second option, change the listening port on a server - you may as well only play local.

Short answer, get friendly with the firewall / network admin and get him to sort you out access.
Alternatively, find out what kind of firewall it is, starting point, from your PC, command prompt - telnet to the default gateway and post the response here.

If that doesn't work, download putty (google), and SSH to it and see what response you get.

Post your answers here and I'll mark it in the morning.

Either way, if your school admins know what they are doing you have no hope.
