How do I unlock a weapon?

so I have 518 points but can't choose an unlock.

I go to the BFHQ screen and look at all the pretty guns in the bottom right hand corner. However by each new one there's a padlock.

how do I unlock on?

Pen sometimes you have to wait upto 24 hours before you can unlock your weapons - so the database can catch up with your score and promotion.

You'll know when you can unlock as you will hear a drum roll after getting past the logging on screen and you will be taken to a weapons screen, where it will ask you what you want to unlock. (as far as I can remember)

Dewey is correct here. You will hear a drumroll and also a text saying you've passed a certain amount of points. People on the server you play on will also notice it by the text on the top left on their screen.
For me it usually takes like an hour before I can select the next unlock or so (When it's in your BFHQ).
I'd really suggest that you choose the gun for which kit you play most.
Survivor of LAN V, VI, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIV, XVI, XVIII, XX, XXIV, XXX, XXXII, XXXIV and XXXVI so far...

no, still no unlock.

I have 518 global points - I log in and it's just hte same as normal :(

I think Doris is right. It's not untill your second promotion you get the first unlock...

When the game was first release the unlock & promotion system was like this.

E1 | Private (0) - No Unlock
E2 | Private First Class (500) - No Unlock
E3 | Lance Corporal (1,000) - 1st Unlock
E4 | Corporal (10,500) - 2nd Unlock
E5 | Sergeant (25,000) - 3rd Unlock
E6 | Staff Sergeant (50,000) - 4th Unlock
E7 | Gunnery Sergeant (75,000) - 5th Unlock
E8 | Master Sergeant (150,000) - 6th Unlock
E8 | **First Sergeant (150,000) - 6th Unlock
E9 | Master Gunnery Sergeant (250,000) - 7th Unlock
E9 | **Sergeant Major (250,000) - 7th Unlock
E9 | Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps (2,500,000) - No Unlock

but now it looks like this (after patch, can't remember which one)

Well, I'm at 533 (yes, wow) and I didn't get my Lance Corporal yet... Don't know if the 1.12 patch did something?!?

I have my 4th unlock.

I'm only a Sergeant (3,100) but i was playing SF and for some reason after 2 games (100 points) i got given an extra unlock.  :D

I've just made Lance Corporal ar 522 points and been given the unlock. I don't think you automatically get lance corporal at 500 points. Hang in there and watch the progress line you must be close

Yeah, I got mine a short while after. I don't know exactly at how many points. Yesterday I was promoted to Corporal and got myself an F2000 :)
