last night we played on "Fallen" one of the new POE2 maps. It is an excellent infantry only map with (I feel) one detraction: the hit indicators. I've been thinking for a while that the hit indicators give too much info away about your tactics. As it is a simple job to remove them what are peoples thoughts? Should they stay or should they go?

Blunt

you mean the text at top left that says Liberator killed Blunt all the time?

That would make it more realistic/dangerous/fun:D

you'd have to go check someone was dead or risk leaving them to counter attack

we could try it to see what it's like...doesn't have to be permanent if it's no good

hadn't thought of that although it sounds interesting. i was thinking more of the little red arc that you see to give a rough indication of the direction from which the fire came.

Blunt

can't say I'd noticed it much, and certainly didn't didn't know it was directional:blink:

I really must get my head out of my exhaust pipe and play BF2 again. No, really! I voted Get rid of them. Also, get rid of names above enemy's heads a la that realism jobbie. Can that be done?

Not sure but there must be a way - I'll look into it (ditto me and LFS S2 )

You'd have to have some indication though, even if it wasn't directional. It would be quite frustrating if you simply keeled over and died, without any idea you were being shot at. The health bar in the corner is too small, to keep tabs on in a firefight.

The Project Reality mod keeps directional hit indication in, and loses the health bar entirely. It also loses the enemy names-above-heads, and adds a delay for friendly names the futher away from you they are. That works really well for an immersive feel. :thumbsup2:

I'd say keep it as it is. You've a restricted view of the environment in an FPS anyway.  Also, the better weapon damage parameters in POE2 usually mean you're dead before you can respond to incoming fire. Unless the shooter has numpty aim, in which case he deserves to be wasted. :norty:

But hey, we can always try it out. :)

alsao if you got shot irl on your right shoulder you might have a vague idea whereabouts the shot came from?

definitely drop the names over other players heads thing, and this distance based delay for friendlies sounds good too :) you could drop all the tags and up the tk rate of course :D

At present the only way I can find to remove names is to install the Project Reality Mod - there does not seem to be a variable you can easily alter in a config file (unlike hit indicator where you can have "sv.hitIndicator 1" or "sv.hitIndicator 0")

why not make the vanilla BF2 server a PRMM server. I dont recall PRMM having any directional info other than the different sound of gunfire (AKs/M14s etc) you learn to discriminate between the two which gives you a great idea where your enemy is. As for the health bar in PRMM if you take any more than a couple of hits (usually just one) you wont even be bothered which direction it came from. You'll be respawning!

The monkey makes a good point. OK, if we're being 'realistic' you'd probably be too busy screaming in pain to turn round and shoot back before you're dead, but in real life if you were shot from a given direction, even if it killed you, then teammates with you or coming across your body later on would know vaguely where you were shot from, which we don't get in games currently.
