Smells like hosted SharePoint?

Regarding work, I need some way to organise documents, tasks, links, pictures etc. around specific jobs/cases with possibility to meta-search across the lot. As a bonus, linking tasks to documents/links/pics etc would be cool.

I know this can be done using sharepoint. The thing is, that is overkill. I don't need the collaboration stuff, customs and what not. But - I can't find a piece of software which can do this combo of meta-search and linking tasks.

so, if SharePoint is the way to go, how cheap can you get a hosted solution - and what types/setup/space/functions should you go for? I am a noob at this. :g:

It's basically an open-source alternative to Sharepoint. I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but I believe you can download a free 'Community' version - it might be worth a look :)

It looks cool, but the place actually doens't have their own server, nor any server rented I have anywhere near those rights needed to install it

I checked the site though and looks good. And quite a few people are using it.

It is a consideration still, for sure. I did a post on linkedin and got quite a few, good responses. Plenty of software and work procedures to go over. Currently trying a basecamp and projectplace trial. Can't make up my mind. I don't need collaboration and time management. I just want the ability to proper organise data and meta-tags around projects... but hey ho.

I gotta say, I like the look of this a lot. Was about to do a new server with a new Sharepoint installation. Instead I have stopped that and am in the process of installing this to give it a shot. Had a brief play with a local install and it is very good :)

Could I do such a setup or is it too complicated? I have limited, close to no, knowledge of Linux...:g:and do you think it suits my need?

btw: I came across the Getting Things Done approach to organising your worklife. I thought it was yet another marketing scam to take your money but... tbh I kinda like it. Still on my 2nd day only, but I really like it. Do not read the main page for it, it smells of scam, but get the book. I got the book from my library. I have managed to organise GTD (and think GTD) with my gmail, gmail calendar and (the wonderful) tasks. What a wonderful stress-free way of working and the realisation of poor list-making etc. really is. My head is empty now and I can concentrate on work :D

There is a windows installer package that does everything for you. Ideal for testing :)
