Dr Sadako

BK started this thread http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19199. Here is a summary from various threads of things to consider to improve your game in CS.

Aiming
Pick up your aim off the ground. Try keep your crosshair in expected chest-head height. However, sometimes you should aim where you think your opponent will appear as shown in images below. Notice that the crosshair (marked in red) is in the "right" position before you turn the corner. That way you only need to strafe into firing position. Much easier than strafing and aiming at the same time. This will also shorten your reaction time.

Firing
Short controlled bursts. Especially with AK and Colt. Practice single shot HS with AK/Colt against the bots on the server.

If you know you have an enemy around a corner start shoting before you turn that corner. Shoot where you think he/she will be. If you don't know for sure take an educated guess. Where would you stand if you where there? That will definitely give you some edge.

Full auto in close combat is sometimes more effective than accurate burst fire. Combine it with a charge forward instead of a sideways strafe to get full effect.

Crouching improves your accuracy with some weapons. If you use an MP5 for example crouching is a waste of time. To know which weapons improve when crouching look at the crosshair when you crouch. If it becomes smaller the accuracy improves. If nothing happens you might as well be on your feet.

Weapons damage
Desert Eagle is the only pistol that can shoot through walls and doors. Shotguns and SMGs do NOT penetrate doors or walls. Rifles and HEs deals damage trough doors and walls. Use your ammo wisely.

Colt with silencer deals less damage than one without silencer. However, accuracy is improved with the silencer.

Grenades
The grenades have become much more powerful in CSS than previous versions. So if you have the money buy as many as you can. Don't waste you HE immediately. It can be quite lethal at the end of a round when health is running low.
Note that player names does NOT show by your crosshair when you are flashed or in smoke.

Radar
The radar in CSS is different than before. Your viewing range is smaller. When your teammates are out of range they will only appear at the edge of the radar. You are able to see if your team mate sees enemies on the radar, which is very useful. Also if one of your teammates sees the bombman or the bomb is down it will be indicated on your radar automatically. Try to keep an eye on it to pin point enemies or spot a rush as you can count the contacts on the radar.

Sound
Use sound to your advantage. First of all use a headset. Speakers are not as precise as headseats when it comes to stereo perspective. Use a 5.1 surround headset (e.g. SpeedLink Medusa) if possible. It is so much easier to pinpoint where sound are coming from and also further away! If you have EAX or similar on your soundcard enable it! You will hear 30% more than without. Note that the 5.1 sound is greatly improved from CS/CZ to CSS.

Leave your clogs at home. Try to get into the habit to walk or crouch walk as much as possible. Consider that you might need to stop running earlier than expected as your opponent could have both EAX and surround sound enabled ...

Learn the sound triggers on each map. Note that they have changed (both sound and position) from CS/CZ to CSS!

Use flash/HE to temporarily deafen your opponent.

Scoreboard
From time to time during a round take a quick look at the scoreboard to count the number of enemies remaining. Saves you from being shot while defusing.

What to do when dead
If it is possible to view the enemy in spectator mode when dead do so. You should use both the overview and the first person view mode. See how the enemy move, where they camp and try to figure out why they are doing it and how to counter act their move. Also try to see if there is a pattern to the enemy’s movement. Does the same enemy go to the same place or camp the same spot every round? Also use the time to get to know the map. Take a look at all the routes and dangers/advantages with each route. All players have their own style of play. Study a player an entire round (or more) and try to pick up something that you could add to your style. See how they aim, what weapons they use, and how and where they advance to improve your own play. People do things in different ways, some more effectively than others, but the opportunity for you to learn from is there, right on the screen in front of you!

Tactical Bomb Planting
Tactical planting sounds weird, but it is really very important. By planting the bomb in the right place will make it easy for you to protect it from being defused and harder for the CT’s to defuse.

Many people plant the bomb in a hidden location e.g. behind a box as feel less exposed to enemy fire while planting, but this makes it very much harder to defend. As an alternative strategy, consider trying to plant in a more open or visible area so that your team mates can take up better defensive positions to defend the bomb and stop the CTs defusing it.
Remember that it is cheating to plant anywhere where the bomb can not be defused or to take advantage of a map flaw.
Use sound as an aid to defending the bomb. You don’t have to see the bomb to defend it if you are close enough – you’ll hear the defuse attempt and can then creep around the box or corner to shoot the CT whilst they are in mid-defuse.

Here are some examples of tactical planting on de_inferno (from CS1.6). It is possible to plant by the boxes facing the balcony. If planted there the bomb could be covered from balcony, sniperhouse area, and sand pit.

Physics engine
In CSS you have the possibility to knock things over and that can be used to your advantage. Here is an example from office where T makes one route more difficult to approach for CT.

If you haven't noticed it yet your model in CS:S cast a shadow. So when you think you are cunning and hiding somewhere make sure there isn't a light behind you! If there is your shadow will be seen by the opponent even though you are not seen. You could then get shot through a wall. Don't scream wallhack immediately ...

Very nice read for somebody that doesn't know jack **** about how to move around in CS. Maybe I'll join a couple of Fridays and give it a try again sometime in a not too distant future :)

A good post Sadako. I knew most, part from the bomb placing stuff. Never ocurred to me before.

My general experience is that when the bomb is actually moving up to place he is rarely covered properly. Me for one tended to seek out the opposition to sort of keep them at bay. but... Lately I have changed it to be a sort of fire-magnet as he plants. I am not sure this is TCS spirit or not, but I have more than once played as a shield for the bomb as he plants or better, been trying to lure them to attack me as he plants, knowing that the guys will easily wipe me out (as I tend to suck in melée). I could kill more camping, but the bomb would then be a target. Is it okay to sort of run to certain death sometimes, to lure fire?

After the bomb as been set I tend to move for a good spot to protect the bomb, usually nearly opposite any other team mates.

DuVeL

Your First Objective is to cover the bomber to the bombspot, Second is Covering while he plants, Third: Cover the bomb so it doesn't get defused.
So: COVER!!! :)

but if being a bullet magnet means he can get the bomb down safely then so be it .

I just thought i'd point out something, it'll make it harder for me, and a few other snipers, but I think it's easier if everyone knows straight off, on cs_Italy, when going/sniping in the long hall, (When your a counter Twerrorist. ^^ Not an Evil Twerrorist. OK, no more 'w''s) there is a shadow cast from your model on the left side of the hall, ( The sun if sorta behind you. ) I just thought i'd point this out, because you get people trying to sneak round the corner, and I/and fellow snipers, just wait for the head.

I'll see what else I can cook up.

Shather - Rogue Twink.

nice post Sadako, good idea.

DuVeL

Another thing I use alot:
Think like you're opponent, where would you be hiding when you play on that map, also what would he do.
As an example, when I play against Sadako, he'll sometimes make a call to make a decoy at one bombspot, usually you sometimes see people rush back to the decoy bombspot so Sadako can have a clear bombspot. :flirty:
