Hi Folks,

I was speaking to GhostMjr about this the other night and thought I'd share it with you guys. I'm not at all affiliated with them so you can make your mind up for yourself.

I bought a Samsung "smart" tele about 6 months or so ago. ONe of the reasons I chose Samsung was for their "AllShare" technology / software that would allow me to play digital music and movies from my PC. Unfortionately AllShare was a huge let down as it never seemed to work and the so-called links to files could never be seen by the tele.

Gave up after a while but decided to have a look on the Net to see if there was anything new.

I stumbled across Serviio media server and I thought I'd give it a try.

I had to punch a hole through my internal firewall to get it to work (as outlined in the software instructions) but once that was done, it worked like a charm. It transcodes or converts files on the fly to play on your supported tele. One huge success from my point of view is that I can play HD files (.mkv) using the software and with the optical out from my tele into the amp, I can get full DTS sound.

It doesn't work with ISO's unfortunately so I'm having to convert a couple of those. However, it works a treat otherwise. It has the ability to categorise your files by type grouping together even TV series' that may be floating around your system. It "should" be able to run off your NAS but only as a storage device. The media centre will need to do the work. (I don't have a NAS so not sure how it would link tbh)

So Impressed I even bought a license opposed to using the free version and it's only USD$25. The currency surprised me a bit as the developer lives in London.

Give is a shot. It get's the Ninja seal of approval.

no peanuts

Not heard of this one, will have to check it out and see what it's like.

I used the free version of TVersity for a while, and went ahead and bought a license for that a couple of years back. This was when I still used an xbox as my media center.
These days I run XBMC around the house, and TVersity to make the content available when I'm on the go, it also transcodes on the fly.

If I get a chance to check it out this weekend, I'll post some feedback on the differences.

currently using DVBlink server on one of my NAS boxes, grabs streams from a external location and makes em available to my XBMC clients and alike, nice integration with EPG

Sorry I've just woken up and am seriously needing coffee but what's the setup?

How are you streaming from your PC to your TV. You just hard-wire your TV into the network? I have a Panasonic Telly with a RJ45 connector is that it?

Thanks

Nice find.

I currently use Plex to stream to my LG TV, and I'm yet to find anything it won't play - but I'll give this a shot if Plex ever lets me down.

Also using Plex that syncs to my Roku Box (my TV is a bit old and has no network connection) As with Tut I've yet to find anything that Plex has a problem with. I'm considering the Plex android app so I can stream stuff through to my tablet as well.

Whatever's gone wrong it's not my fault.

If you have your tele connected to your network (RJ45 preferred) then it's a doddle. Run the software on your PC, point the server software at your folders where you're media is and voilla.

Ahh excellent. Nice one and one for me to try

I've used Plex in the past. Mostly so I could control things with my phone (requires an app that costs money), but since my TV is also plugged into my PC as a monitor I tend to just use VLC because it's a better player than my TV. I did like the Plex feature where it keeps track of what you've watched and what you might want to watch next though.

I was playing around with Serviio last night, nice feature set, fast and seems nicely stable. Sadly it doesnt like multicast IPTV streaming :/
