This look like it warrants further investigation. A realistic mil-sim FPS, it's a fully blown remake of an outstanding HL2 mod, now available on Steam as an early-access title:

INSURGENCY is leading an indie revival of the tactical shooter genre.  Take to the streets for intense close quarters combat, where a team's  survival depends upon securing crucial strongholds.  

This game is highly competitive and unforgivingly lethal. It strikes  a balance between one-life gameplay and prolonged action. This means no  cross-hairs, realistic weapon damage, and careful maneuvering.

Realistic weapons handling and equipment load-outs combined with  simple heads-up-display and user interface keep players immersed in the  fight.

INSURGENCY'S game modes create a distinctive experience from other  first-person-shooters. Capturing objectives prolongs the entire team's  opportunity to achieve victory. Matches often become an epic tug of war  as both teams struggle to gain control of objective areas. Multiplayer  modes support up to 32 players, while Co-op modes support 6 players.

£15 will get you beta access, which seems a little steep but I'm tempted to pick up a copy and give it a go.

Firing up now for a quick blast....

Initial thoughts:

- It's slow, but purposeful. Running about in the open is guaranteed to get you instantly killed, so moving slowly with team-mates covering each other is the only way to play.
- The gun model/sound/animation design is fantastic.
- You gain resources ('Supply') for you and your team when you achieve objectives. Supply is then spent on kitting yourself out with bigger weapons and attachments (scopes, silencers etc). You also gain Supply passively, so even if you're losing you can still upgrade your kit (albeit at a slower rate than if you're winning).
- I had half an hour with the 'Push' game mode last night, where one team is trying to destroy a set number of points on the map with explosives and the other side must defend them. It feels a little flat when you're playing as a lone wolf, I'd like to try it again with a couple of Deadmen on TS.
- The best game mode by far looks to be VIP, where one team has to escort an VIP across the map and the other have to assassinate them.
- The best game modes appears to be the ones where teams are forced to move, otherwise it's too easy/tempting to hide in a corner somewhere and camp with a scope.

It's got lots of potential, but I suspect that it would be at it's best on a locked server with two teams focused on achieving the objectives.
