BF2 'Special Forces' - server impact???

Hi there...

Just a quick question (which is bound to show my ignorance of how the game server works!)...

With the new 'Special Forces' expansion coming up next month - what impact will such an expansion have on the server?

Can it be applied to the server? (Is it just a mod really?)

If it is applied, does that mean everyone has to buy it to play on the server?

I think TL said the server cpu utilisation at the LAN for our 32-player games was like 3% so going from there it sounds like we could run CS1.6, CZ, CSSource, BF2 AAS, BF2 normal, BF2 special forces, and still hardly push the thing. I don't really understand server useage though so I could be venting hot air

Cheers Monkey - that's interesting...

So we *maybe* could run a basic BF2 AND a SpecOped BF2 game. That'd be nice.

Just as an aside - does anyone know (just curious) how much a ranked server rental is?

(NOT suggesting dMw should have one - just curious.)

I know thw BoDfellas are trying to rent a server, you could ask them. They were saying they would host it for you...

I thought ranked involved the number of servers you host and they have to be public.

To be honest i think dMw would do well to stay away from a ranked server, for several reasons.

1. The server would be packed, i prefere the relaxed and growing form of game play we have.

2. It takes more than 10(maybe 6) in a server to start a game! lol

3. It costs a lot. A lot more than the effort involved in running it.

I think growth of our own server with better game play out wins a ranked server anyday.

I would love a passworded dMw ranked server

. but as I understand it, you can't run MODs on ranked servers, so it would be bye bye to AAS

Just a quick note to everyone...

Please note that I asked as to the price of a ranked server for my curiosity and went to great pains to include the following line to the end of my comment:

FWIW I tried a rank (pun intended) server last night whilst ours was being rebooted. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the teamwork going on - although I guess I was just lucky to choose a good one.

I can see how that quest for medals, ranks and glory can put paid to any teamwork and slightly laisser faire attitude we have though.

A passworded DMW server would be good though - but I guess prohibitive on cost
