Time has come to either renew/upgrade Norton internet security for a year or change to another virus scanner/firewall. I was recomended nod32 any of you guys run nod32 or heard any good or bad stories about it. I dont really trust the free versions (avast avg etc)
Similar story for firewall any suggestions good/bad experiences?? Is zonealarm as good as a paid for firewall?? Or would i be better to stick with an internet security suite like Mcafee or Noton ?
cheers

I have renewed Norton on both my pc's as I have never had an issue with anything getting through ....

my opinion ...stick with Norton

 ;)

Norton AV is good but imho sucks up too much memory, compared to other good programs. Here we Run Kasperksy AV for Workstations and it works like a bliss.

I am done using freeware scanners - they are NOT as effective and efficient as buyware.

I use and love ZA Pro - a pretty good suite of software plus you regularly get massive discounts on other bits of security software should you be interested...

Panda is really good. The titanium edition comes bundled with antispyware that works really well. Found stuff my current Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition didn't find.

I use avg free and have had no problems with it so far. What i do want to say about norton is that a few years ago i got norton packaged with my dell pc and used other versions that i spent alot of money on. These both used alot of memory especially at startup and caused the computer's start menu to not fully load until after norton had done so. The only utility i do use from norton is there extensive virus removal tools and database which is very useful and helpful if at times the steps are muddled or the wrong way around.

Imho go with what you feel comfortable with. Try nod before you buy it or avg. I had had avg free for a few years before i tried the nod32 software and didn't get on with it very well because of the different layout aswell as it was a bit confusing. The choice is yours :).

Heard good things about nod32 as well. I currently use McAfee Firewall and AV and it does a sterling job! :D

I've been running nod32 for the last year or so now. It's a fantastic piece of software and it is so lightweight you don't even notice it running. Oh, and I've also put nod32 on some computers that was previously running avg free and it found some virus' that avg missed! So I no longer trust the avg software at all.

If you've got the option to change from the abomination that is norton then go for it :)

Another option is the internet security suite from Trend Micro. I used to run that before swapping to nod32. However, as I have a hardware firewall I didn't really need all the extras that Trend offered. However, I still put the Trend suite on my mothers computer as it has everything included and is simple to manage.

Thanks for all the info!! I have d/l the trial of nod32 and   my pc boots in 40 secs compared to the age it used to take with Norton. All that time in ms config and disabling various unneeded services and it was my av that took all the time to start!! I spent a night looking at the options and decided to try before i buy. Delighted so far it found the smile (joke virus) zipped inside a zip file, and it blocks a lot of internet crap that ive never seen norton block(unless it does so quietly) Jpegs mostly i guess  those pictures with web bugs which track/collect your info.
Delighted so far will report back in 30 days if i purchase or not (£35 for 2 years £46 for 3)  which includes any upgrades.

Sounds interesting. My Kaspersky will run out in a few months so looking forward to your comments on it.

Have bought nod32 as my symantec antivirus ran out, and nod was cheaper. The memory claim needs a little looking at. Yes the little majobby that runs in your task bar uses almost no memory (500K) but the main nod32krn uses about 20MB which isnt all that different in total to norton/symantec etc

However, it is much faster to load, scan etc, and it looks nicer as well! Really easy to use intuititve UI as well.  Will continue to report as I use it more...

Well - slightly longer term review:

Updates - excellent - two or three generally come through a week

Resources Usage - very efficient - really small "footprint"

General Protection - excellent - was picking up virus' embedded in web pages - malicious javascript etc that my old symantec one couldnt pick up

Cost - Two years subscription for just over £30 - bargain given that that's the same cost as one year from symantec

User Interface - Simple and uncomplicated but not at the expense of features - everything is all pretty intuitive

Overall: The best anti-virus I've used so far: 4.5/5
