Well, built my new PC today - what fun I had. Top tip:

Norton Ghost 9 doesn't see disk controllers on the PCIe bus

I had to install XP from scratch and now I'm pulling all the files out of the backup using the Ghost Image Browser.

Anyway, the new spec is as follows:

Core 2 Duo 6600
Gigabyte 965P-DS4
2 Gb Corsair DDR2 TWINX PC6400
Gainward 512Mb 7900GT Bliss Golden Sample
2 Samsung Spinpoint 200 Gb SATA2 drives

Once I get everything installed I'll post some test results but lets just say it boots in about half the time (if not less) that the old PC took and that was a 3.4GHz Prescott HT!

Only managed one benchmark so far (HL2 Lost Coast Stress Test)

1280x1024 - 4AA/8AF - all options set to high - HDR Enabled

125 frames/sec 8)

Funnily enough it said my PC was below spec to play the game because my CPU was only 2.4GHz which is below the minimum recommended of 2.9GHz :lmfao:

PS - no overclocking at all (not even video card)

I returned my first graphics card as it had problems. The replacement is excellent. Here are some extra results:

HL2 Lost Coast Stress Test - 1280x1024 Everything set full, HDR Enabled, AA disabled, 8xAF = 141 FPS
CS:S Stress Test  - 1280x1024 Everything set full, HDR Enabled, AA disabled, 8xAF = 222 FPS
3d Mark 06 -> 5299

All without overclocking anything.

Nice rig mate. :thumbsup2:

I'm thinking of pretty much going down this route as well.  I've max'ed out the memory/proc upgrade path on my nForce2, AMD Athlon-powered setup, so I figured a complete new PC was in order next year.

The only thing I'm waiting on now is Vista.  My rationale is if I'm speccing a 64-bit rig, it seems daft to hobble it with a 32-bit OS - even if Vista will probably have shedloads of bugs initially.  Also, by the time Vista comes out I'm hoping there'll be a greater choice of Conroe compatible motherboads out there, which will spark the usual price wars.

It has to be said, your benchies are looking quite :flirty: at the mo though.  I'm more confident than ever that a system of this type will prove to have a couple of years in it.
