Technically you can, provided the assailant is a threat to your or your possessions, and you are using reasonable force. You are allowed to point the gun at the person, it's the pulling the trigger bit that tends to piss people off! If you assailant is similarly armed therefore, you can quite happily shoot him in the knowledge you are using reasonable and appropriate force to defend yourself!
