TFT monitor

Lo fellas
Any of you guys use a TFT monitor at all ?
I currently use a 19 inch CRT type and it kinda dominates the the desktop
area.I,m thinking of getting a TFT jobby, are they any good for gaming ?

Your thoughts please..........

Well, Sadako mentioned to me that you need a rate of 0.17 or less to get good enough refresh for games, and most of the cheaper ones around are 0.25 so I think TFT is a little immature for games at the moment.

my missus recently got a nice 15" LG tft display on her desktop. She too was fed up of the 17" monitor taking all the space, plus this 15" is about the viable size of a 17" anyways :-)

I've given it some testing and must admit its pretty darn good for a cheapy-ish brand at Â£140.

CS.... hmm it may get on your nerves playing on a lcd for long periods tho. Ask TeaLeaf, he uses one for CS all the time! but his be a good one.

Yep I use a TFT. Mine is the LG 882LE and I have had it about 18 months now. It's 18.1" viewable area (about the same as a 21" monitor) and I love it! I have zero problems with CS, the contrast is good and I find it FAR more relaxing to view (and I spend about 8 hours a day in front of my machine :?

Ignore all the hype about refresh rate on TFT monitors - you cannot compare refresh on a CRT with refresh on a TFT, they are fundamentally different things.

The biggest thing to ensure is that your TFT is connected to your PC via a DVI port. Make sure the monitor has a DVI connection and that your gfx card has one too. The difference betwen a DVI connection and an analogue connection is HUGE 8O .

There will be some peeps against TFTs (read the thread here), but I am one of the happy ones. I would not go back to CRT - I like the screen picture quality, I like not getting headaches from looking at a CRT for too long and I like the real estate I have reclaimed on my desk.

OK Mr. Monitor King, on a related note what about the 60 hertz refresh rate thing.

I'm using a GeForce 3 Ti 500 card (30.82 drivers) with a Hansol 17" CRT monitor. I run CS using the Open GL settings and at 1024 x 768 res.

I'm told that I am probably looking at a screen running at 60 hertz due to a bug in XP and that this is crap. Personally it looks fine and I'm also not prepaired to upgrade my graphics drivers (anything newer than the 30.82 ones crashes my system).

Am I missing some wonderous graphic esperience by not fixing this?

I play it at 60 Hz with no problem..
You really cant see any diference anyway from 60 to 85 or even 120 so i wouldnt worry

smiley. a lcd monitor is pixel based.... a pixel stays lit till its next updated.

A crt has a cathode ray tube that is like a gun that can illuminate one pixel like spot on the phospherous screen at a time..... it goes left to right, top to bottom. At it reaches the bottom the pixels at the top are starting to fade, hence the seeming illution of flicker.

its a totally diff ball game. Its the pulsing light effect of a monitor that gives u the headaches.

I can tell the difference. 60hz gives me a major headache in about 30 minutes.

I have this awesome program that overcomes this problem regardless of graphics card or driver. I'll post a link when I get home.

Sorry my monitor is a bog standard cathode ray tube jobbie.
I do notice a very slight flicker and an odd effect if there is a lot of white on the screen i.e. a new text document etc.

Ok refresh rates arent a problem for me atm.
Erm whats this about response times tho ...........
Does it create an effect of more lag for the client.
My graphics card is a Leadtech 4200 Ti MYVIVO 128 meg and apparantly it
does have DVI connection according to the blurb on the box so hopefully that isnt an issue.

I too get the same problem with large blocks of white on the screen but uping the refresh rate cured that. I too want to reclaim desk space so if anyone can recommend a good place to get reasonably priced tft screens I would be grateful.
