* i think i'm going to be sick*

However this is not new. This has been going on for quite a while now, the same procedure is carried out with dogs as well, (except they are kept in small cages in factories).
It definitely makes me extremely angry:ranting2:. Goes the same for the turtles as well >>> all for Chinese medicine.

However a higher % of the populous in the far east are accepting this is wrong and barbaric>> change soon perhaps?..........Hopefully.

Would like to give some of these guys that do this a good :boxing:.

Quote from: Nefertem;178570Indeed.. But most people are happily unaware of the conditions of some of those animals we eat daily I suppose..
Would've signed it if it were for cows and pigs aswell.. A happy cow equals a good steak  :) (most of the time I reckon the animal dies painless instead of the beating and such, as the dolphins in this case goes through)

Happily unaware? I think most people are very well aware of how the meat they eat gets to their table. But if we apply some logic and say that we do not not agree with the horrific thing we saw in the dolphin video, how then can we accept the equally horrific things we saw in the UK farming video's I posted? What's the difference? The difference is that it costs us nothing to acknowledge that dolphins are being brutally killed because we do not eat them. Banning the wicked things we saw will have no affect on our lives.  We don't eat dolphin. It would just ruin the livelihood of some Japanese fishermen who deserve everything they get for being so cruel to dolphins. But applying the same logic to the issue of the abuse of animals in the EU is harder. We eat these animals. We pay nice low prices in the supermarkets for them too. If we object to their treatment what then? Food prices go up? We become vegetarian? That's not good. So what do we do? Do we accept the abuse of dolphins because it costs us nothing and conveniently ignore the abuse of cattle. pigs. chicken etc etc and carry on stuffing our faces full of them?

It's absolute hypocricy of the very worst kind but hey it still means we can scoff on McDonalds and KFC all we like.

I think a lot of it has to do with the animal and the method of despatch.

More human methods of killing are more generally acceptable.  Certainly in most people's minds they prefer the humane killing of an animal to the death through starvation of millions of humans  - without meat we would not survive at our current population levels, there is not enough non-meat food production in the system to sustain us right now.  It doesn;t mean it is right, just that you have to make a choice and prioritise who gets to live.

The animal being killed can also make the topic more or less emotive.  Dolphins are thought to be highly intelligent and they are also mammals.  Cuts a bit closer to the bone when it is a smart mammal that is being killed.  Nobody kicks up about the flies you swat during summer and leave to die smeared against the wall with their innards hanging out of their abdomen.

Likewise not all farm slaughter is inhumane.  Yes apalling videos can be posted, but that does not comdemn a whole industry.

Personal choice.  I chose to live.......and eat.  I also chose to object to inhumane treatment where I am able to express a preference and where my opinion counts and can help effect a change.

I don't disagree with you at all, Dolphins and Chickens are not the same animals. We could have a discussion about how more or less productive an acre of crops are compared to an acre of pigs but I take your point. Try telling an Eskimo to go veggie!!

I just wonder how much we would be appalled by the Dolphin video if we ate it every day and it made up a significant part of our diet? Do we object to the method of killing Dolphins we saw (which I agree is indefensible) or just to killing them by any means. In the same way we don't like the idea of killing and eating cats and dogs because we keep them as pets, maybe we don't like killing Flipper because we see him as a beautiful intelligent animal rather than food. Perhaps it's a cultural thing as much as anything else. I don't know. It's grim either way.

if they hunt em, they should kill em in a orderly fashion.
we got whale here in norway, but they use a big gun to try to kill them fast.. but this is not the way to hunt.

I'm not sure it would change the view I took.  It might arguably reduce the degree of reaction, but I suspect my conclusion would remain exactly the same.

I've been contemplating replying to this for a while, so here go my size 12's.

I haven't watched it and haven't signed it. I can guess what it's about and have no interest. I know, aren't I evil. I went through a stage a while ago and pretty much went vegetarian based on some reading I did about chickens - which is pretty much the only meat I eat.

It lasted a fair while and I try now to insist on organic free range stuff, but the truth is.....in a Bill Hicks way....animals die, every day. Yes it's wrong how we treat them, but how can you begin to differentiate just because, as Smilo already articulated in a much better way than me, it's Flipper.

You can't possibly think that it's a great thing to sign this petition and then go home and have a chicken sandwich whilst wearing your Gap clothes and Nike trainers. Probably wrong, but I'm sure you get my drift.

Yes! You can make a difference, sign all the petitions you can, then go home and live the dream of hypocrisy. Don't worry I'm with you in spirit, I abhor all the goings on, but I'm aware of the double standards...I'm sure in a twisted way that makes me worse.

I will now don my flame retardent cloak and pop down to the blood bank to hand some over. Then I'll drive home on my mobile whilst smoking a fag.

Benny, I'll be eating my steak tonight and might even go for a tuna sandwich later tonight  (dolphin friendly of course), but I believe upset/outrage/disbelief/laughter* was about the way they were killed, not the fact that they were killed.  Animals dies yes, but they don't have to be treated quite as poorly as those were.
